Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever cases are one of the public health problems that are endemic in the Sememi Health Center working area. This study analyzes the relationship between environmental factors that influence dengue fever cases, including the larval index, rainfall, temperature, and humidity in the working area of the Sememi Community Health Center, which recorded 183 cases from 2020 to 2024.This study utilized a cross-sectional analytical design, with analysis conducted on 60 monthly secondary data collected over five years. The correlation test results show that only the number of free larvae has a significant relationship with cases of dengue fever (Sig.= 0.000), while other climate factors do not. These findings confirm the crucial role of the number of free larvae as a determining indicator of dengue fever cases. The main limitation of this study is the aggregate and secondary nature of the data, which does not allow for confirmation of cause and effect, but only correlation. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the Mosquito Nest Eradication program be strengthened as a top priority in efforts to control dengue fever.

Abstract

Avocado leaves contain various compounds that are proven to cause death in Aedes aegypti larvae. In its use has limitations, namely the nature of the extract tends to cause turbidity in water, thus inhibiting the survival of Aedes aegypti larvae. In contrast to Aedes aegypti larvae, Culex sp larvae can live and develop well in dirty water. This study aims to assess the potential of avocado (Persea americana) leaf juice as a biolarvicide of Culex sp. The treatment consisted of five groups of avocado leaf juice concentrations, namely 0% (negative control), 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%. Each using 20 Culex quenquefasciatus instar III larvae with replication 6 times. Mortality data of Culex sp larvae exposed to avocado leaf juice for 24 hours were analyzed using Anova test, Bonferroni test, and Probit test. The results showed that the mortality rate of larvae was 12,5%, 25%, 72,5%, and 92,5%, respectively. The Anova test showed that there was a significant difference between the concentrations of avocado leaf juice (p=0.000), the Bonferroni test showed that only the negative control (0%) and the 2.5% concentration, as well as the 2.5% and 5% concentrations, were not significantly different. The LC50 value obtained is 2.338%. It was concluded that avocado leaf juice has the potential as a biolarvicide against Culex sp.

Abstract

The slaughterhouse industry generates liquid waste with high organic loads and complex composition, which can pose environmental and public health risks. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a liquid waste treatment plant in a slaughterhouse. Quantitative methods were used for objective measurements, with sampling conducted at five key points in the wastewater treatment system. Parameters analyzed included pH, DO, COD, TSS, NH3, and fat, oil, and grease. The results showed that The Collecting Tank exhibited high COD reduction efficiencies between 87.52% and 93.89%, alongside TSS reductions ranging from 83.15% to 92.95%. Conversely, the Sequencing Batch Reactor demonstrated inefficiency in COD reduction, with outlet measurements exceeding inlet values; however, it achieved a 50.44% reduction in NH3 in one instance. The Anaerobic Tank showed significant COD reduction efficiencies from 72.66% to 98.27%, but NH3 reduction was negligible. Lastly, the Secondary Clarifier was inefficient in COD performance, with all tests indicating higher outlet results, while TSS efficiency was noted in only one test at 71.96%. The conclusion was although the Collecting Tank and Anaerobic Tank showed high efficiency in COD reduction, the Sequencing Batch Reactor and Secondary Clarifier units showed the NH3 reduction efficiency varied among the units tested.

Abstract

Borax is a prohibited food additive according to the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 033 of 2012 because of its harmful effects on human health, including disorders of the central nervous system, kidney and liver dysfunction, and even death. Nevertheless, the use of borax is still suspected in certain food processing practices, including the production of crackers. This study aimed to determine the presence of borax in crackers sold at the market. This research used a descriptive design with organoleptic testing and qualitative borax testing using the rapid test method. The research objects were cracker products sold by three vendors in the Jenangan District Market. Total sampling was applied based on the total number of crackers sold by the vendors, resulting in 21 samples. The results of the organoleptic test showed that three samples had slightly dull colors and seven samples had textures that were difficult to crush. The qualitative rapid test results indicated that 14.3% of the cracker samples were positive for borax. Crackers containing borax were generally characterized by a dull appearance and a hard texture that was difficult to crush. In conclusion, borax was still found in a proportion of cracker products sold in the Jenangan District Market, indicating that the use of this prohibited additive persists in some food products and may pose potential health risks to consumers. Keywords: borax, crackers, organoleptic test, qualitative test

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is an infectious disease that poses a public health problem in tropical regions and is influenced by climatic factors such as temperature, rainfall, humidity, and wind speed. In 2023, Malang Regency recorded 1,018 cases with an incidence rate (IR) of 38.2 per 100,000 population. This study aims to analyze the relationship between climatic factors and the DF IR for the 2022–2024 period using an ecological design and Spearman’s correlation analysis. Climate data were obtained from the BMKG, while DF data were obtained from the Health Office. The results showed that only air temperature was significantly associated (p = 0.032), while rainfall, humidity, and wind speed showed no significant association (p > 0.05). Temperature can serve as an early warning indicator. High temperatures should be prioritized as the optimal time for implementing control activities, such as community education and intensive Mosquito Larval Control (PSN).
