Abstract

The increasing birth rate and number of toddlers each year have led to a rise in diaper usage, resulting in significant diaper waste. Improper management of this waste can cause environmental problems. One potential solution is utilizing diapers as raw material for liquid organic fertilizer production. This study aimed to determine the differences in bacterial starter addition and fermentation duration of liquid organic fertilizer from diapers in terms of nitrogen and potassium content. A quasi-experimental design with a post-test only control group was applied. The study focused on the hydrogel in the diaper’s inner layer. The independent variable was fermentation duration (12, 15, 18, and 21 days), while the dependent variables were nitrogen and potassium content, each with six replications. Data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA. Results showed average nitrogen content for fermentation durations of 12 days (0.34%), 15 days (0.43%), 18 days (0.53%), and 21 days (0.64%). The lowest nitrogen content was found at 12 days (0.32%), and the highest at 21 days (0.66%). Average potassium content for fermentation durations was 12 days (0.27%), 15 days (0.36%), 18 days (0.43%), and 21 days (0.54%). The lowest potassium content occurred at 12 days (0.25%), and the highest at 21 days (0.56%). Abstract

Wonoayu Kab. Kata Kunci: Pembangunan Jamban, Percepatan ODF, Masyarakat Desa Pager Ngumbuk ABSTRACT The high incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in Pager Ngumbuk Village, Wonoayu District, Sidoarjo Regency, indicates an unresolved environmental sanitation problem, particularly related to the practice of Open Defecation (BABS). Data from the Wonoayu Community Health Center recorded an increase in diarrhea cases from 1,147 (2021) to 1,207 cases in 2023. Household surveys showed that most families do not have healthy latrines and the distance between clean water sources and pollutants was less than 10 meters. This problem was exacerbated by the low level of knowledge of housewives regarding clean and healthy living behaviors (PHBS). Although East Java has recorded 92.78% of villages with ODF (Open Defecation Free) status, Sidoarjo Regency, including Wonoayu Village, was still lagging behind in achieving this goal. This community outreach activity is to build a Community Latrines in Pagerngumbuk Village, Wonoayu District, Sidoarjo Regency. Sidarjo is participating in the Open Devection Free (ODF) Acceleration Program through Community Empowerment for Infectious Disease Prevention in 2025. This community service activity will be conducted from March to October 2025 using a participatory and empowerment approach. Methods will included outreach, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and latrine construction. The primary target was five priority households without latrines and classified as low-income families with vulnerable members such as toddlers and the elderly. A cost-sharing strategy would be implemented to increase community ownership of the constructed facilities. The results of the activity showed a significant increasing in latrine utilization and the implementation of Clean and Healthy Living (PHBS). All target families have stopped practicing open defecation and have begun maintaining their latrine facilities independently. Two-month monitoring shows that 80% of families consistently practice clean living behaviors. The strategy of ongoing education, the involvement of community leaders, and a community-based approach have proven effective in encouraging behavior change and the sustainability of the sanitation program. The success of the community service activity in Pagerngumbuk Village is strongly supported by the participation and motivation of the community and local leaders. Keywords: Latrine Construction, ODF Acceleration, Pagerngumbuk Village Community

Abstract

Garbage is still a severe problem for poor and developing countries. Population growth, as well as changes in public consumption, are the causes of the continued amount of waste. Efforts must be made to prevent the emergence of bagasse waste in the sugar industry and the community. Prevention can be done by utilizing bagasse waste as organic material in compost that is beneficial for plant growth with the addition of local microorganisms (MOL). Research with pure experiment posttest Only Control Group. This study aims to determine the effect of bamboo shoots' local microorganisms (MOL) on compost quality from bagasse waste. The number of samples was 10 with 3 times replication and 1 control. The sampling technique was done by random sampling. The C/N Ratio for giving MOL 50 ml was 22.9, the C/N Ratio for giving MOL 100 ml was 22.5, the C/N ratio for giving MOL 150 ml was 20.2, and the C/N ratio for giving MOL was 25.9. There is an effect of giving a lot of MOL to the resulting C/N ratio (p = 0.005). The community needs to add innovations by processing bagasse waste into compost that can be used to reduce the amount of waste generation and apply it to plants.
