Abstract

Calon Arang has a complex values in Bali. This can be seen from the number of Calon Arang manuscripts (texts) stored in various places in Bali, including in the institutions of the Faculty of Literature, Gedong Kirtya, and abroad in the Netherlands. For the purpose of this study which is to obtain the authentic and oldest Calon Arang text, the tracking was carried out to these places using the method of text study (Philology). With the aim to that values in the text of Calon Arang can be understood, it is therefore necessary to understand the value of the text as contained in the text of Candidate Arang Lor 5387/5279 which dates to 1540AD, namely in the Gelgel era, the oldest discovered during this research. Calon Arang harbor the Hindu Buddhist cultural and religious values of his day so it is important to express the Shiva-Tantric and Buddhist values contained in the text with the content analysis method. The findings obtained from the study of the text of Calon Arang is varied and it was copied from time to time. Base on philology findings the text of Calon Arang 1540 AD contains cultural and religious values in the Gelgel era, namely Tantric-Shiva and Buddhism. That values live and develop up to now as a breath of Hinduism and Balinese culture which is known to be sacred and religious as seen in the storyline and dialogue of Buddhist Mpu Beradah with all of its students such as Calon Arang, Lenda, Lendi, Guyang, Larung and to the King Erlangga.

Abstract

The architecture of the traditional buildings of Hindu people in Bali is a form of implementation of the combination of material and spiritual dimensions. The combination of these two dimensions form the energy and strength in the building that is created, so as to provide a sense of comfort and quiet in the person who occupy it. In the belief of the people of Bali, the process of building construction is not just to build, but done with the stages and planning, both from good days up to the means of ceremony. This is because the building is not only used as a residence, but also used as a place to carry out various ceremonial activities. Strong spiritual values can be felt in the traditional Balinese house architecture that is now widely seen by many tourists who visit Bali. this is because the energy radiated from the building is a representation of the spiritual value which is the power of the gods bersthana on the building that makes people see the calm and awe of the spirit value contained in it.

Abstract

This study discusses the Bugis or Bissu priests in South Sulawesi Province. The Bugis people's belief in bissu has been written since ancient times and has even been documented in the Lontara I La Galigo. In general, Bissu is a man but looks like and dressed up like a woman or in the Bugis language; it is called Calabai. During the heyday of the kingdoms in South Sulawesi, a Bissu had a crucial position in traditional ritual activities and other sectors such as medicine, as a fortune teller, to determine good days and a royal advisor. They are believed as the bridge between humans and gods or ancestral spirits through their language called Torilangi. Along with the times, the existence of Bissu in South Sulawesi began to disappear because they were considered to be carrying out idolatrous activities. There is no more special attention given by the government to their survival. So that many Bissu has switched professions to survive, such as being a bridal make-up, working on rice fields and gardens as well as taking part in regional tourism activities through the Magiri attractions they display.

Abstract

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz is a German philosopher who provides a comprehensive argument about the existence of God. Although Leibniz has made a mistake in thinking about God, the evidence of God’s presence offered by him gives us an example and a strength to deepen our faith: Leibniz’s courage is to increase his confidence and his power to maintain God's existence. The arguments presented by Leibniz are very relevant to the concept of God in Hinduism. It also seems that with evidence of harmony that had already been built before, Leibniz fell into the trap of atheism implicitly because it denied the existence of a personal God and only relied on internal law. Regarding the harmony that had already been built before, Leibniz explained that civil laws were working in monade. Monade are predetermined natures, which result in having one characteristic that governs everything. But the best is that not only for the whole in general but also for individuals, especially individuals who have a love for God.

Abstract

Mādhva's thought had a strong influence on Vaiṣṇava philosophy. Madhva enforces the Dvaita system that has significantly contributed to the study of Vedanta. The Aṇubhāṣya is his short treatise reflecting his interpretation of the Brahma Sūtra explaining his position of thought. In his primary doctrine of Divinity philosophy, he affirms the status of Brahman (the impersonal absolute), and the ātman (individual self) is dvaita (dual), and according to him that this is the position found in the Vedas. Direct examination of the written texts provides a holistic understanding of how Mādhva thought of Brahman ontology and reveals the mystical veil that he received direct guidance from Vyāsa, the author of the Brahma Sūtra and Vedas. This paper also provides an overview of Mādhva's philosophical and theological position of thought.

Abstract

Balinese society is a society with a religious character, because in almost all daily activities of society there is a connection with Hinduism. The application of Hinduism in the system of community life is very prominent, where in the application of this teaching it has been adapted to customs, awig-awig and village kala patranya respectively. Likewise with the Nyumuni Nyakan ceremony which is a ceremony held by the people of Pakraman Tengkudak Village at the beginning of the rice harvest as a gratitude shown to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa. This ceremony has its own uniqueness in that the perpetrators who carry out the ceremony are not allowed to communicate with the hope that during the process of preparing the offering of purity it is maintained, the rice used by the porridge is obtained by the rice nebuk process which is carried out at sunset, and then served in the morning before sunrise. The theory for analyzing this problem is symbol theory. This research approach uses a phenomenological paradigm with qualitative research methods.

Abstract

The Mahābhārata, one of the two major epics of ancient India, refers to the data for C, d, and t of each of the Svarbhānu, the Moon and the Sun where C is circumference (pariṇāha), d is diameter (viṣkambha), and nothing is clear about t. So far t has not been interpreted by any modern scholar. The terms used for t in the Mahābhārata are vipulatā, vipulatva, and viṣkambha, each of which means is largeness, extent, or width. This paper aims at igniting the process of interpreting t. It shows that t is rectilinear and cannot be interpreted in the manner in which the body of the Svarbhānu, the Moon or the Sun be proved to be cylinder or ellipsoid or spherical segment or oblate spheroid or disk. That t is a range of extent to d is, although reasonable and feasible, not fully acceptable as the ratio between d and t is not the same for the data given for d and t in the case of each of the Svarbhānu, the Moon and the Sun. t can be conjectured to have been prevalent till x where 500 BCE ≤  x ≤ 500 CE. x may go even beyond 500 BCE.
