Abstract

Coda wave data from four stations are to understand seismic attenuation on Sumba Island. Specifically, we estimate the quality factor at 1 Hz (Q₀) and its frequency dependence (η) across multiple window lengths (20–120 s) and frequency bands (1–7 Hz) using waveform data from 394 local earthquakes. The aim is to evaluate how these parameters reflect crustal heterogeneity and tectonic activity. Results show that Q₀ increases with window length, indicating that coda waves progressively sample deeper and more homogeneous layers, while high η values at shorter windows suggest significant near-surface heterogeneity. These findings highlight a depth-dependent variation in seismic attenuation and structural complexity. The study reveals spatial variability, with MELO station showing anomalously high Q₀ values, likely due to localized site conditions or deeper structural influences. Sumba’s location within the tectonically active Sunda-Banda arc transition zone further supports these observations. The combination of low Q₀ and high η values confirms high tectonic activity, and the use of coda wave attenuation analysis offers a reliable, parameter-based framework for assessing seismic hazard potential in regions with complex geodynamics. This work fills a research gap by providing empirical data and interpretation for a previously underexplored area in eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

Helminthiasis remains a significant health issue, especially in developing countries like Indonesia, where the prevalence among elementary school children ranges from 31.8% to 80%, particularly in areas with poor sanitation. This condition can cause anemia, malnutrition, cognitive impairment, and reduced academic performance. Therefore, an effective school-based prevention model is necessary. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an educational model for helminthiasis prevention using picture storybooks and storytelling. A mixed-methods approach was used, involving qualitative validation by experts and quantitative analysis through pre- and post-tests. A total of 100 respondents, including teachers, parents, and health officers, participated in a survey assessing their knowledge of helminthiasis prevention and school sanitation conditions. The effectiveness of the educational intervention was analyzed using paired t-tests. Results showed that majority of 70% of respondents are aware of helminthiasis. Regarding school sanitation, 55% of respondents disagree that the sanitation in elementary schools is adequate. Statistical analysis indicated a significant improvement in students' understanding post-intervention (t = 16.65, p = 0.002). This study confirms that picture storybooks and storytelling effectively enhance students’ awareness and understanding of helminthiasis prevention. Further research is recommended to evaluate the long-term impact of this intervention.

Abstract

Environmental policy has long been a central topic in sustainability studies, with a growing body of research emphasizing its social and psychological dimensions. However, much of the existing literature predominantly relies on quantitative measures to assess public attitudes, often overlooking the subjective experiences that shape individuals' perceptions of environmental policies. This research aims to address this gap by exploring how individuals interpret and make meaning of environmental policies in their everyday lives. Here, we adopt a phenomenological approach to capture the lived experiences and personal meanings attached to these policies. Through in-depth interviews with participants, we uncover the complex ways in which personal experiences, social norms, and cultural values influence people's perceptions and actions regarding environmental policies. Our findings reveal that subjective experiences, rather than mere awareness or factual knowledge, play a significant role in shaping environmental behavior. These results underscore the importance of considering personal narratives in environmental policy formulation and open new avenues for future research that explores the intersection of personal experience and policy acceptance.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the in vitro Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value of sunscreen formulations containing vetiver essential oil (Vetiveria zizanioides) at various concentrations. Vetiver essential oil is known to possess various biological activities, including potential as a UV protective agent. Oil-in-water emulsion-based sunscreen formulations were prepared with varying concentrations of vetiver essential oil (1%, 3%, and 5% v/v). The SPF value was determined spectrophotometrically using the in vitro method. The physicochemical characteristics of the formulations (viscosity and pH) were also evaluated. The results showed that the addition of vetiver essential oil tended to significantly increase the SPF value of the sunscreen formulations with increasing concentration. The formulation with a 5% concentration of vetiver essential oil exhibited the highest SPF value. The physicochemical characteristics of the formulations were still within the acceptable range for topical preparations. This research indicates the potential of vetiver essential oil as a natural UV protective agent in sunscreen formulations.
