Abstract

This study aimed to identify the speaking difficulties experienced by tenth-grade students at One of Senior High School in Karawang and to explore the strategies they used to overcome those difficulties. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, this study involved six tenth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings revealed that students encountered various speaking difficulties, which could be categorized into linguistic and psychological factors. Linguistic challenges included limited vocabulary and pronunciation problems, while psychological difficulties involved fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and speaking anxiety. Despite these challenges, students employed several strategies to improve their speaking ability, including watching English videos and listening to English songs, memorizing vocabulary, using digital tools such as Google Translate, practicing independently in front of a mirror. These strategies reflected cognitive, memory, compensation, affective, and social strategies as proposed by Oxford (1990). The findings suggest that students are active learners who employ various strategies to cope with speaking difficulties. Therefore, English teachers are encouraged to provide supportive learning environments and meaningful speaking opportunities to enhance students’ communicative competence.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the low understanding of science concepts regarding the water cycle among fifth-grade students at SDN 2 Siangan, stemming from the prevalence of abstract, conventional teaching methods. The primary objective of this study was to enhance student learning outcomes and conceptual mastery through the implementation of the Co-Experiment model, which is rooted in experiential learning. This classroom action research was conducted over two cycles, incorporating systematic stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection, involving all fifth-grade students at the school. Learning outcome data were gathered through evaluation tests and analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods. The results indicate that the Co-Experiment model successfully transformed the learning process into a more dynamic experience through the utilization of concrete media, such as dioramas and ziploc simulations. A significant improvement in academic performance was observed, with classical mastery increasing from 36% in the pre-cycle phase to 57.14% in the first cycle, eventually reaching 85.71% by the end of the second cycle. These findings confirm that integrating independent scientific exploration, collaborative teamwork, and structured facilitation is highly effective in reducing misconceptions and strengthening students' scientific literacy. Consequently, the Co-Experiment model based on experiential learning is highly recommended as an excellent instructional strategy for fostering meaningful science education in primary schools.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by Augmented Reality (AR) on improving the understanding of Integrated Science and Social Studies (IPAS) concepts among fifth-grade students at MI Ciomas. The background of this study was the low level of students' conceptual understanding caused by teacher-centered learning and the limited use of interactive learning media. This research employed a quantitative approach using a Pre-Experimental method with a One Group Pretest–Posttest Design. The research subjects consisted of 22 fifth-grade students selected using saturated sampling. Data were collected through essay tests that had been tested for validity and reliability. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality testing, and the Paired Sample t-test. The results showed that the average pretest score was 47.41, while the average posttest score increased to 84.50 after the implementation of the Problem Based Learning model assisted by Augmented Reality. The normality test indicated that both pretest and posttest data were normally distributed. Furthermore, the Paired Sample t-test yielded a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which was lower than 0.05, indicating that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. These findings demonstrate that the implementation of the Problem Based Learning model assisted by Augmented Reality has a significant positive effect on improving students' understanding of IPAS concepts. Therefore, the integration of Problem Based Learning and Augmented Reality can serve as an innovative and effective learning strategy to enhance conceptual understanding in elementary school science education.

Abstract

Salmonella typhi is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes typhoid fever and remains a significant public health concern, particularly due to the increasing resistance to conventional antibiotics. Natural products such as red betel leaf (Piper crocatum) and white pomegranate peel (Punica granatum), which contain flavonoids, tannins, and polyphenols, have potential as alternative antibacterial agents. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of single and combined extracts of red betel leaf and white pomegranate peel against Salmonella typhi. This experimental study employed the Kirby–Bauer disk diffusion method using a completely randomized design. Chloramphenicol 0.005% was used as the positive control, while sterile distilled water served as the negative control. The treatments consisted of single extracts of red betel leaf, single extracts of white pomegranate peel, and combinations of white pomegranate peel and red betel leaf extracts (P:B) at ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1 with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The observed parameter was the diameter of the inhibition zone after incubation at 37°C for 24 hours. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, Levene’s test, One-Way ANOVA, and the Least Significant Difference (LSD) post hoc test. The results showed that red betel leaf extract exhibited moderate antibacterial activity, whereas white pomegranate peel extract demonstrated strong to very strong antibacterial activity. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences among treatments (p≤ 0.05), indicating that the combined extracts produced greater inhibitory effects than the single extracts. The largest inhibition zone diameter was observed in the combination ratio of 1:2 at a concentration of 100%, measuring 25.21 mm, which was categorized as very strong antibacterial activity.

Abstract

Exposure to physical factors is one of the main problems in the implementation of industrial hygiene, especially in micro, small, and medium-sized furniture enterprises (MSMEs), which often have limited control over their working environments. This study aims to analyze occupational health risks associated with exposure to physical factors and to map the spatial distribution of these risks using a Health Risk Assessment (HRA) approach integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study employed an analytical observational design with a mixed-methods approach, incorporating direct measurements of noise, vibration, thermal work climate, and lighting using calibrated industrial hygiene instruments, supported by field observations and interviews. The HRA results indicated that noise constituted the physical hazard with the highest risk level at several workstations, whereas vibration, thermal climate, and lighting were classified as low to moderate risk. Spatial mapping using ArcGIS showed that the highest concentration of risk was located in the wood-cutting area. This study contributes to the development of spatially based industrial hygiene evaluations as a foundation for more targeted and effective occupational safety and health (OSH) control strategies.
