Abstract

This study aims to explore the reproduction of female identity in the novel Lelaki Harimau by Eka Kurniawan and its German translation Tigermann. This study focuses on the representation of the identity of the female characters in both versions of the text, differences in attitude, judgment, and affect towards female characters in both versions of the text, and influence of the cultural norms of the target language in the reproduction of female identity in translation. This study employs the qualitative method with the approach of content analysis of both versions of the text. Data is obtained from portions of the texts that describe female characters. The results show that there are significant differences in the representation of female identity between the source text and the target text, caused by different lexical and grammatical choices. The German cultural norms influence the reproduction of female identity. The translator adjusted the gender characteristics and roles to fit the context of the target culture. This finding underlines the importance of gender sensitivity in the translation of literary texts and shows how translation is not only a process of transferring meaning, but it is also a medium that can reproduce gender identity, particularly female identity.

Abstract

This article examines the conceptual representation of knowledge in Arabic proverbs mahfuzhat displayed on the walls of two Indonesian Islamic boarding schools (pesantren): Condong and Al-Bahjah. Employing Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory and a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach, the study analyzes 10 Arabic proverbs collected through field observation, documentation, and semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that knowledge is metaphorized as light, spiritual adornment, the path to paradise, fruitful trees, and a defining feature of humanity. These metaphors illustrate how mahfuzhat function not merely as decorative or rhetorical devices, but as pedagogical tools that foster character, discipline, and reverence for knowledge in pesantren education. The study highlights the educational and moral significance of Arabic proverbs as cultural texts and demonstrates their role in shaping the intellectual and spiritual formation of santri. This research contributes to the growing discourse on metaphor and education by foregrounding mahfuzhat as a distinct source of Islamic educational values, often overlooked in metaphor studies.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe how women are portrayed in the Like & Share film by Gina S. Noer. This study uses a descriptive qualitative methodology and examines Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis. The role of women in movies is discussed in this study, focusing on how they are portrayed in stories, characters, and visuals. The information used in this study was gathered through observation and documentation methods and takes the shape of conversation, narration, characterization, and visual representations of female characters in movies. Researchers frequently and thoroughly viewed the film, noting significant details about the study's goals. The findings demonstrated that as the story progressed in the movie, women's status changed from object to subject. Like & Share also succeeded in dismantling patriarchal power relations in the representation of women and providing space for female characters to have agency over their traumatic experiences. The audience is not only positioned as passive observers but is also presented in an empathic position to be able to assess and understand the reality of women victims of digital-based sexual violence.

An ethnolinguistic approach is used because the way Makassarese people speak is shaped by ethnic and customary values. This research applies qualitative research method. Data sources are utterances and field note results obtained from three families with Makassar ethnic background who live in Makassar city. To collect data, the researcher stayed in their homes. The results show that direct prohibition utterances are used more dominantly than indirect prohibition in family conversations in Makassar society. It indicates that the Makassar community tends to prioritize positive politeness, show closeness in relationships, and convey messages clearly and unambiguously. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the linguistic structure in the poem 2000 Taht al-Sifr by Nizar Qabbani using the foregrounding theory approach. The main focus of this study is on the techniques of repetition and linguistic deviation used by the poet to create aesthetic effects and convey ideological meaning. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a textual analysis approach. Data were collected through literature study and close reading of the poem, then analyzed based on grammatical deviations and recurring linguistic patterns. The results show that the static repetition found in the poem creates a sense of stagnation and emotional impasse, while linguistic deviations, including extreme metaphors and unconventional syntax, generate symbolic tension that reflects social alienation and political crisis after the defeat of the Arab world in 1967. Foregrounding in this poem not only enhances the poetic expression but also functions as a form of critique of the socio-political condition. These findings indicate that linguistic elements in poetry play a crucial role in constructing meanings that go beyond aesthetic expression.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the politeness strategies used by The Voice Indonesia and USA judges in persuading participants and discovered how cultural differences affect the differences in persuasion. This study uses the politeness strategies theory by Brown and Levinson (1987) to see the strategy of using persuasive politeness strategies, the CCSARP theory by Blum-Kulka et al. (1989) to discover differences in communication culture, and the high-context culture and low-context culture theory by Hall (1976) to show the differences in culture between Indonesia and the USA. The study results indicate that The Voice Indonesia judges predominantly use negative politeness and off-record, which indicates a tendency towards an indirect communication culture. In contrast, The Voice USA judges often use bald on-record and positive politeness, which tends to be a direct communication culture. It shows an influence of high-context culture based on collectivism in Indonesia to prioritize harmony and mutual harmony, while low-context culture in the USA based on individualism tends to prioritize personal interests.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate and identify research trends related to classical literature to preserve Islamic cultural heritage through education, especially in the context of religious education. The primary focus of this research is to examine the contribution of classical literature in the learning process and teaching of Islamic cultural and spiritual values. This study uses a bibliometric approach by analyzing 441 scientific documents from the Scopus database from 2004 to 2024. The data studied includes titles, keywords, and abstracts, with the help of VOSviewer software for visual mapping of keywords and research topic networks. The study has three main findings. First, the productivity of scholarly publications related to classical literature is still low, suggesting that this topic has not been extensively explored academically and has excellent opportunities for future development. Second, the keyword analysis uncovers several essential terms that can be the basis for developing new topics, particularly in the context of preserving Islamic culture through education. Third, there is great potential in making classical literature a vehicle for forming character and cultural values in the religious education system. Thus, studying classical literature as part of the Islamic cultural heritage requires a more systematic and interdisciplinary approach.

Abstract

In the contemporary political landscape, state speeches are crucial areas for the manifestation of power and the formation of public opinion. This study aims to investigate how President Prabowo Subianto utilizes speech strategies in his speech alluding to the “Trump Tariff” and explores how political speeches are used to strengthen the legitimacy of power, build national identity, and manage power relations in the Indonesian socio-political context. The focus of the study is on identifying rhetorical elements that are strategically used to shape perceptions. The approach used in the critical approach is Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis with a descriptive qualitative method. The analysis carried out includes various discursive elements such as legitimacy strategies, strengthening hegemony, forming collective identities, and the influence of discourse on the audience. The results of the study show that President Prabowo Subianto’s speech fulfills three elements of Fairclough’s dimensions. In addition to the three elements of Fairclough’s dimensions, researchers found uniqueness in President Prabowo’s speech, namely the strategy of using polarity, the use of discursive strategies, intertextuality and interdiscursivity, hegemony strategies and re-narratives of power, the construction of collective and national identities, discursive strategies in speeches, and the use of high-level narratives of legitimacy of power.

Abstract

This study reveals the deconstruction of horror elements in the short story collection Sihir Perempuan by Intan Paramaditha. The elements are the monster and art-horror elements formulated in Noël Carroll's theory of horror. This research uses a deconstruction approach. The material objects are the short stories "Pemintal Kegelapan," "Vampir," and "Jeritan dalam Botol" from the Sihir Perempuan collection. The analysis technique used is interpretive interpretation. This study draws upon Noël Carroll's horror genret heory and Jacques Derrida's deconstruction. As a qualitative descriptive study, findings are presented in narrative form. The results show that the author deconstructs both monster and art-horror elements. The monster, typically used in conventional horror as a symbol of external threat, becomes a representation of women's suffering caused by social systems. Art-horror, usually employed to evoke fear and disgust, undergoes a shift in meaning, becoming a complex emotional experience of empathy and acceptance of suffering. These forms of deconstruction emphasize that horror in Sihir Perempuan not only frightens readers but represents women's suffering and critiques patriarchal structures.
