Abstract

Sports have great potential in shaping the character of teenagers, but in Indonesia, they still focus more on achievement than self-value development. As a result, moral and social values that should be instilled through sports have not been optimally utilized, especially in the face of the value crisis and the increase in juvenile delinquency. This study aims to compare the values that teenagers learn through sports and to see if these values are different for boys and girls. The method used was a quantitative approach with a comparative survey design, involving 1,564 adolescents aged 12–18 years in the Bandung area, consisting of 762 boys and 802 girls. Sampling was carried out using the convenience sampling technique. The instrument used was the Youth Sport Values Questionnaire-2 (YSVQ-2), which measures three dimensions of values: morality, competence, and status. The technical aspects of the research include the preparation of instruments, coordination with schools, direct data collection, and data supervision and checking. The results showed that the total sports score of adolescent boys was 54.5 and girls was 53.4, with a difference of 1.1 points. The significance test yielded a value of 0.10 < 0.05, showing a significant difference between men and women in interpreting sports values. This study aims to compare the values teenagers learn through sports and to see if these values differ for boys and girls.

Abstract

Basketball is a high-intensity sport that demands superior aerobic capacity to sustain performance throughout the match. One key physiological indicator of endurance is VO₂Max, which plays a crucial role in determining an athlete’s ability to recover and maintain performance. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Long Slow Distance (LSD) training method in enhancing the VO₂Max of male basketball athletes at Jakarta State University (UNJ). The research employed a pre-test and post-test experimental design with a single group. The LSD training intervention was conducted over a period of six weeks, with a frequency of three sessions per week, totaling 18 sessions. A total of 17 male basketball athletes were selected using total sampling from a population of 20 athletes. The Beep Test was selected as the primary VO₂Max assessment tool due to its practical application in field settings. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS software, applying tests for normality, homogeneity, and paired sample t-tests with a significance threshold of p ≤ 0.05. The paired sample t-test revealed a statistically significant improvement in VO₂Max (t(16) = 13.40, p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 1.83), indicating a large effect size and meaningful physiological adaptation. Similarly, the Beep Test scores improved significantly (t(16) = 10.11, p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 1.53), reflecting a substantial increase in aerobic endurance. These findings confirm that LSD training effectively improves aerobic capacity and serves as a suitable endurance strategy, particularly during the general preparatory phase, to support performance in high-intensity sports like basketball.

Abstract

Attention control is vital for athletic performance, particularly in high-pressure situations requiring quick decisions and sustained focus. The Attention Control Scale (ATTC) is a concise self-report measure of attentional skills, yet no validated Indonesian version exists—limiting sport psychology assessment in the country. This study translated the ATTC into Indonesian using a forward–backward translation procedure and evaluated its psychometric properties among 300 collegiate basketball athletes in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. Data were collected via online and offline self-administered questionnaires and analysed with SPSS 26 and AMOS 24, including descriptive statistics, internal consistency, test–retest reliability, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). CFA confirmed the two-factor structure—Focusing Attention and Shifting Attention—with good fit indices (CFI = 0.93; TLI = 0.91; RMSEA = 0.065; SRMR = 0.057). The scale showed strong internal consistency (α = 0.86) and high test–retest reliability (ICC = 0.89). While the ATTC is a self-report tool and not a substitute for objective tests, it offers a practical, culturally adapted instrument for coaches, sport psychologists, and educators to assess and enhance athletes’ attentional readiness.

Abstract

Adolescent physical fitness is a crucial determinant of health and long-term well-being, yet global data show that most adolescents fail to achieve recommended activity levels. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of combining interval training with push-up exercises in enhancing specific components of physical fitness, namely cardiorespiratory endurance and upper body strength. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed with 29 adolescents who met predetermined inclusion criteria. Physical fitness was assessed using the 12-minute run test (Cooper test) to measure aerobic endurance and a 1-minute push-up test to assess upper-body muscular strength. Data analysis included parametric and non-parametric tests based on normality results. The findings demonstrated a significant increase in VO₂Max from 44.7 to 47.8 ml/kg/min (p = 0.002), alongside a meaningful improvement in push-up performance (p = 0.019). These outcomes confirm that the six-week intervention program effectively enhanced both aerobic endurance and muscular strength. The study concludes that interval training and push-ups, when combined, offer a practical, low-cost, and adaptable exercise model for adolescent fitness development. Beyond the statistical results, the contribution of this study lies in demonstrating how two simple training modalities can be systematically integrated to address key aspects of adolescent health and performance, with direct implications for school-based physical education and youth sports programs.

Abstract

Students with intellectual disabilities often face barriers in developing fundamental motor skills, especially running, because of limited adaptability and slower learning processes. Previous physical education practices in special schools remain conventional and rarely offer models tailored to these students. To address this gap, this research developed a basic running movement model based on traditional games, chosen for their simplicity, cultural relevance, and ability to foster motivation and engagement. The study applied a Research and Development (R&D) approach adapted from Borg & Gall, covering preliminary research stages, planning, expert validation, limited trials, and broader implementation. Participants involved 50 students with mild intellectual disabilities from four special schools in Jakarta. Expert validation using the Content Validity Ratio (CVR = 0.7) and reliability analysis with Cronbach's Alpha (α = 0.839) confirmed that the model was valid and reliable. Effectiveness testing through pre- and post-intervention assessments significantly improved students' running abilities (t = 4.388, p < 0.05). These results indicate that the model is feasible for classroom implementation, as it enhances motor skills, increases student motivation, and provides an inclusive learning medium. Compared to previous studies, the novelty of this research lies in systematically integrating traditional games into structured running instruction for students with intellectual disabilities. The model is also low-cost, adaptable to school facilities, and promotes enjoyment in physical activity.

Abstract

Physical fitness is an essential component for vocational high school (SMK) students, as it directly relates to their productivity and readiness for future work demands. This study aimed to examine the effect of gamification-based Physical Education on the physical fitness of vocational high school students in Palu, South Sulawesi. A quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design was employed with a sample of 30 students divided into two groups: an experimental group (physical education learning with gamification) and a control group (conventional physical education learning). Standardized physical fitness tests—including flexibility, muscular strength, endurance, and BMI—were administered before and after the intervention. Results showed that the experimental group’s average score increased from 2.73 (pre-test) to 4.60 (post-test), while the control group improved from 2.67 to 4.20. Paired sample t-tests confirmed significant improvements within both groups (p < 0.05). However, the independent sample t-test indicated no significant difference between the experimental and control groups (p = 0.077 > 0.05). These findings suggest that gamification can effectively enhance students’ physical fitness within a group, but its short-term implementation does not demonstrate superiority over conventional methods. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on innovative approaches in physical education, particularly in vocational schools, where physical readiness is closely linked to employability. Gamification shows potential as a complementary strategy to boost student motivation and engagement in physical education. Future research is recommended with longer intervention periods, larger samples, and consideration of external variables to optimize the impact of gamification on physical fitness.

Abstract

Dancesport, as a discipline that combines artistic performance and competitive sport, requires technical mastery and strong psychological readiness. Achievement motivation becomes a critical performance determinant, shaped by internal and external factors. This study analyzed the influence of parental support and self-confidence on the achievement motivation of North Sumatra dancesport athletes competing at PON XXI Aceh–North Sumatra 2024. A quantitative approach with an ex post facto survey design was applied. The sample consisted of 10 randomly selected athletes, ensuring that all eligible participants were included in the study. Data were collected using validated Likert-scale questionnaires, and instrument validity was confirmed through expert review, pilot testing, and Cronbach’s Alpha reliability (all > 0.70). Data analysis was conducted using simple and multiple regression with SPSS 26. The results showed that parental support significantly influenced achievement motivation (F = 7.842; p = 0.012), self-confidence also had a significant positive effect (F = 18.074; p = 0.002), and their combination significantly contributed to motivation (F = 6.215; p = 0.028), explaining 64.7% of the variance. These findings conclude that the synergy of external support and internal psychological capital shapes achievement motivation in dancesport. The practical implication is that athlete development programs must integrate parental involvement with structured confidence-building strategies. Theoretically, this study contributes to integrating social support theory and achievement motivation theory in the Indonesian sports context, emphasizing the role of both social and psychological dimensions in athlete development.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI), body fat proportion, and VO₂Max capacity in Physical Education students enrolled in 2022 at FKIP Mulawarman University. The research method used a cross-sectional design. The sample amounted to 80 students through random sampling (53 males and 27 females) aged 18–22 years. BMI was calculated from weight and height using a digital scale and stadiometer, body fat proportion was measured using skinfold callipers at three points (triceps, abdomen, thighs), and VO₂Max capacity was measured with the multistage fitness test (beep test). Data analysis employed SPSS 25.0, using descriptive statistics to present the distribution of BMI, body fat proportion, VO₂Max, and Pearson product-moment correlation to assess the strength and direction of relationships between variables. The findings show a significant relationship between BMI and VO₂Max (r = -0.45, p < 0.01), while the relationship between body fat proportion and VO₂Max is stronger (r = -0.52, p < 0.01). It can be concluded that body fat proportion is a more influential factor than BMI in determining VO₂Max capacity. These results contribute to the understanding that body composition, particularly fat proportion, plays a crucial role in aerobic capacity. The contribution of this study lies in providing empirical evidence to support the development of exercise programs and curricula based on physiological profiles, which can be adapted to other educational contexts.

Abstract

Badminton is a high-intensity sport that requires excellent footwork, agility, and explosive movements. Footwork techniques are essential for positioning the body to execute optimal strokes, and deficiencies in this area can negatively affect performance. Plyometric training improves lower-body power and quickness, while shadow training enhances movement patterns and court positioning. Combining these two methods may significantly improve footwork performance, particularly among under-21 male athletes, yet this approach remains underexplored. This study examined the effect of combined plyometric and shadow training on the footwork ability of badminton athletes. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was used, involving fifteen under-21 male badminton athletes from Universitas Negeri Padang selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion criteria of being active, under-21, and injury-free. Participants completed sixteen training sessions of combined plyometric and shadow exercises. Footwork ability was measured before and after the intervention using the validated six-way footwork test with a shuttlecock, recorded manually with a stopwatch. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26, applying normality and homogeneity tests followed by a paired-sample t-test. The results showed a significant improvement in footwork performance (p < 0.05), with most athletes shifting from “poor” in the pretest to “good” or “excellent” classifications in the posttest. These findings demonstrate that the combined training effectively enhanced agility, coordination, and movement efficiency. In conclusion, the integration of plyometric and shadow training provides an effective and engaging approach for improving badminton athletes’ footwork ability and can be recommended for coaches aiming to optimize player performance.

Abstract

A strong coach–athlete relationship is essential for achieving optimal performance, particularly in Paralympic sports where athletes face physical limitations and social barriers. Coaches play roles that extend beyond technical instruction by providing emotional support, motivation, and adaptive strategies tailored to individual disability needs. This study aims to understand how Indonesian Paralympic athletes interpret their relationships with their coaches based on their lived experiences. A qualitative phenomenological approach was used with three Indonesian Paralympic athletes actively training for the 2024 Paris Paralympics: one athlete with a visual disability, one with a physical disability, and one with an intellectual disability. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and analysis of coaching documentation, which were processed using a phenomenological analysis procedure. The results show that the coach–athlete relationship is characterized by emotional closeness, mutual commitment, reciprocal role support, and alignment of goals. Athletes perceive their coaches as figures who listen, understand their conditions, and provide both psychological and practical assistance during training. Coaches adjust communication styles and coaching strategies to meet athletes' sensory and cognitive needs, enabling athletes to stay motivated and confident. Shared goal-setting further enhances cooperation and strengthens athletes' readiness for competition. This study concludes that the coach–athlete relationship in the Indonesian Paralympic context involves emotional, adaptive, and goal-oriented interactions that serve as a foundation for inclusive and high-performance coaching. These findings offer practical insights for enhancing coaching development programs that prioritize interpersonal sensitivity and support athletes' overall well-being.
