Abstract

Leptospirosis also known as Well's disease, is an acute infection that can affect humans and animals and is classified as a zoonotic disease. This disease is caused by bacteria from the genus Leptospira, which are commonly found in rodents. Cases of leptospirosis in humans generally occur during the rainy season with high rainfall that often causes flooding, both in urban and rural areas. This disease also tends to appear in areas with poor sanitation, low implementation of clean and healthy living behaviors, and a high population of rats carrying Leptospira bacteria in the environment. The problem in the target locations is the lack of public knowledge regarding environmental sanitation efforts and leptospirosis prevention. Educational activities are carried out in two areas: Banta-bantang and Manggala. The solution to be provided at the target locations is counseling on environmental sanitation efforts, including how to control rats both physically and chemically. Based on the implementation plan, the external targets include submitting a national journal, creating a video of the activity implementation and intellectual property rights (HAKI), while the achievement targets in community service are implementation achievement targets. The target for implementation is that 80% of the community understands efforts to prevent leptospirosis 80%, the community understands rat control 80% and education on making rat traps 80%. Abstract

The use of skincare products among adolescents is increasing, yet it is often not accompanied by adequate knowledge regarding safety and proper usage. One important aspect that is frequently overlooked is the period after opening, which determines the safe duration of product use after the packaging is opened. This issue may lead to health risks such as irritation, infection, and reduced skin quality if products are used beyond the recommended period. This activity aimed to improve students’ understanding of the period after opening, its difference from the expiration date, and the importance of selecting safe and authorized products. The method included health education through counseling, distribution of fan-shaped leaflets, question-and-answer sessions, and interactive games, followed by pre-test and post-test assessments involving 38 students of SMP Negeri 10 Samarinda. The analysis showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 11.34 in the pre-test to 15.21 in the post-test, with a paired t-test result indicating a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), demonstrating a significant difference before and after the education. The majority of students who initially had a moderate level of knowledge improved to a good category after the intervention. In conclusion, education on the period after opening and safe use of skincare products proved effective in enhancing students’ knowledge and critical awareness, thereby serving as a preventive effort to protect adolescent skin health.

Abstract

A surplus of bananas in Pakuan Village has led the local community to process them into various banana-based products, one of which is banana chips. Banana chips are a processed food product with significant potential as a source of income for the people of Pakuan Village. However, the quality and production capacity of banana chips in the village still face several challenges, such as traditional and inefficient production processes, resulting in suboptimal product quality and limited production volume. The purpose of this community service activity is to conduct direct observation and apply technological innovations in the banana chip production process as an effort to improve both product quality and quantity. The method employed in this activity involves providing training and education to enhance skills in the application of technological innovations through hands-on practice, particularly using an oil-draining machine in the banana chip production process. The implementation of this appropriate technology has proven to be highly effective and efficient in improving the quality and production of banana chips in Pakuan Village, ultimately contributing to the welfare of the local community and increasing the competitiveness of the products in the market.

Abstract

Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, is one of the best tourist destinations in Indonesia. One impact of this is increased activity on the beach and sea, which has the potential to cause emergency conditions and require immediate assistance. Equipping coastal communities with the ability to perform basic life support (BLS) is crucial, including for teachers. The purpose of this activity is to provide participants with knowledge and understanding of the principles of BLS assistance, and participants can provide BLS assistance if they encounter accident/injury victims in the water. This activity was held at the Nipah Community Health Center Hall, Malaka Village, Pemenang District, North Lombok, with a total of 22 high school teachers from Malaka Village participating. The activity was divided into six sessions: pre-test, material delivery, demonstration using mannequins, BLS skills training for participants, discussion and question-and-answer session, and concluded with a post-test. The success of this activity was seen from the increase in post-test scores compared to the pre-test, which was 33.3%. The average pre-test score was 69.55, increasing to 92.73. During the training session, participants enthusiastically practiced the BHD skills that had been previously demonstrated by the presenter and team. This activity needs to be continuously carried out for coastal communities in different locations and targets as an effort to increase the life expectancy for victims who experience respiratory arrest while carrying out activities at sea or on the coast.

Abstract

This service aims to optimize idle land in the yards of residents of Sulek Village, Bondowoso Regency, through household-scale organic mustard cultivation. The activity was carried out in four stages, namely identification of unproductive land, preparation of facilities, planting and care of mustard greens, as well as mentoring and evaluation. A 350 m² demonstration plot was planted with organic mustard using a participatory approach. Seedlings were planted using environmentally friendly techniques and organic fertilization. The initial harvest reached 500 kg of good quality mustard, and of the 4.2 hectares of idle land identified, about 30% was successfully converted into productive land. The community response was very positive, demonstrated by the involvement of the hamlet head and community leaders in the socialization and development of household gardens. In addition to improving family food security, this activity strengthens the spirit of gotong royong, environmental awareness, and opens micro-economic opportunities for residents. This program demonstrates that organic backyard farming can be an effective strategy in building an independent, healthy and sustainable village.
