Abstract

Academic writing in the form of international journal articles is primarily read and used as references for many academic communities. Since the writers of an international journal are from different backgrounds and countries, their works have some differences in terms of writing styles. How the writers show authorial identity and authority through the texts is one of the aspects that causes the differences. This study investigates how Indonesian and non-Indonesian writers established their identities in academic writing. This study used the descriptive qualitative research method. Hyland’s (2005b) stances theory (hedges, boosters, attitude makers, and self-mentions) was applied as the research approach with the help of the AntConc corpus toolkit to analyze the data that were collected from an international journal. The results and discussion show similarities and differences regarding Hyland’s stances in journal articles written by Indonesian and non-Indonesian writers. The results and discussion reveal both similarities and differences in how Indonesian and non-Indonesian writers convey authorial identity and authority through their texts.

Abstract

Video Dubbing, or adding translated dialogues into a film or series, has been applied as a learning method in EFL speaking courses. Students can download videos from any platform and record their voice-overs in English. Previous research primarily studied the effect on students' skills. The impact on motivation, confidence, and self-efficacy is still worth exploring. Therefore, this research examined the effectiveness of the Video Dubbing Project on EFL students' self-efficacy and proficiency in speaking. This research design is Mixed-methods, which are pre-experiment and descriptive qualitative. The subjects were 38 students in grade 9 of junior high school in Situbondo, Indonesia. The result showed that it was significantly effective in improving self-efficacy and proficiency. However, based on the qualitative data, this project was simple for proficient students, but for those with low self-efficacy, the absence of a requirement to show their faces on camera empowered them to attempt this project. Upon completing their videos, they often express surprise and satisfaction by saying, "Turns out! I can speak English."

Abstract

This research aims to design educational webtoons as a medium for character education targeted at adolescents, employing a design process that includes pre-production, production, and post-production stages (Owens, 2020). Utilizing a quantitative approach, closed questionnaires were distributed to webtoon readers via Google Forms, revealing that the use of webtoons for character education is effective and well-received. The values conveyed include tolerance, friendliness, discipline, hard work, independence, religiosity, honesty, creativity, curiosity, and love of reading. However, improvements are needed in areas such as panel spacing, character depth, and the relevance of presented issues to teenagers. The theoretical framework is based on character education principles that emphasize the development of ethical reasoning and behavior among students; this study supports the idea that engaging storytelling through webtoons can effectively promote essential virtues among youth, enhancing their moral development and social-emotional competencies.

Data collection was conducted through descriptive and writing tests. Data analysis utilized correlation tests to examine the relationship between variables and T-tests to compare pre-test and post-test scores between the two groups. The results indicate that the class using AI recommendation systems experienced a significant improvement in media literacy skills compared to the control group. Data analysis also showed an increase in score homogeneity, confirming the effectiveness of the intervention in making learning more equitable. Abstract

The popularity of video games among language learners makes games a potential medium for learning languages. Previous research shows that playing video games, one of which is DOTA 2, can have a positive effect on students' vocabulary acquisition, but it still does not explain what specific vocabulary learning strategies are used. This study explores DOTA 2 players' experiences in acquiring new knowledge and identifies effective strategies for acquiring knowledge in the context of the game. The research method used is a case study research design, as well as semi-structured interviews and observation. The results showed that DOTA 2 players learned new vocabulary through exposure while playing the game, and social interaction was the most emphasized comprehension learning strategy used by the participants. This study provides insight into the effectiveness of DOTA 2 as a language learning tool, especially regarding knowledge acquisition.
