Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) plays an important role in shaping students' character in Indonesia through an in-depth psychological approach. This study aims to identify PAI's contribution in strengthening moral and spiritual values, shaping religious identity, increasing tolerance between religious communities, and supporting students' academic achievement. This study uses a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data was collected through questionnaires on 20 students from various levels of education in Surakarta, while qualitative data was obtained through in-depth interviews with 15 PAI teachers in Muntilan. The results showed that students were delighted with PAI subjects and recorded good academic grades. Interviews revealed that teachers play a significant role in guiding students to understand and apply Islamic values daily. In addition, PAI has been proven to contribute to fostering tolerance, empathy, and harmony in a multicultural environment. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that PAI not only functions as a medium for the delivery of religious teachings but also as a strategic means in shaping the personality of religious, ethical students who can interact harmoniously in a plural society. Therefore, strengthening the quality of PAI learning is the key to national education management.

Abstract

This study aims to encourage the implementation of the Child-Friendly School (CFS) policy at the Senior High School (SMA) level in East Java Province by highlighting supporting and inhibiting factors, the impact of the policy on the school environment, and strengthening strategies. The study used a mixed-methods approach with a descriptive design. Data were obtained from three schools selected purposively: SMAN 8 Malang, SMAN 20 Surabaya, and SMAN 1 Trenggalek. Data sources included principals, teachers, students, parents, and school policy documents. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, participant observation, questionnaires, and document analysis. Data were described thematically and descriptively to reveal the dynamics of policy implementation. The results showed that most schools had integrated CFS values such as non-discrimination, religious tolerance, and bullying prevention efforts. However, challenges were still found, including seniority practices that lead to bullying, limited facilities in rural areas, and a weak bullying case reporting system. It is proven that the implementation of the Child-Friendly School policy has shown significant progress in East Java, but the desire and equality of the quality of its implementation still need to be strengthened. The involvement of all parties, such as teachers, students, parents, and the government, is an important key in creating a school environment that is truly safe, inclusive, and supports the holistic development of children.

Abstract

This study aims to empirically examine the effect of curriculum management on the level of integration of the national curriculum in a modern pesantren environment, especially at Pondok Pesantren Al Junaidiyah Biru, Bone Regency. The background of this study is the urgency to harmonize the Islamic values-based pesantren curriculum with the national curriculum standards as a response to the competency demands of the 21st century. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational survey design. The entire population of 38 permanent teachers was used as respondents through the census technique. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire instrument that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis was conducted through classical assumption tests (normality and linearity), Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression. The results showed a positive and significant relationship between curriculum management and national curriculum integration, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.572 and a regression coefficient of 0.307 (p < 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.327 indicates that 32.7% of the variation in curriculum integration is explained by the quality of curriculum management. The findings corroborate Mintzberg and Ornstein's educational management theory and demonstrate the importance of planning, organizing, and evaluating curriculum systematically and contextually. This research makes an important contribution to the development of Islamic education management theory as well as a practical foothold for formulating pesantren curriculum policies to be more adaptive to social, cultural, and educational globalization changes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze power relations in the educational practices at SMP Al Amanah, a junior high school located in Jeneponto Regency, South Sulawesi. The focus is on how decision-making structures and academic interactions shape—or hinder—the development of critical national consciousness among students. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a case study design. Using a descriptive-qualitative approach with a critical case study design, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with teachers, students, and school administrators, as well as document analysis, including curricula, syllabi, and school meeting notes. The data were analyzed using critical discourse analysis, framed by Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony and Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital. Findings reveal that structural dominance by the school principal in decision-making processes, coupled with a curriculum that emphasizes a national narrative without meaningful integration of local context, results in hierarchical power relations with minimal participation. This condition weakens the role of teachers as agents of change and limits students’ opportunities to engage critically in the learning process. Unequal distribution of cultural capital leads to the reproduction of a uniform and decontextualized discourse of nationhood, thereby weakening reflective national awareness. The study underscores the need for a more democratic decision-making structure within schools and the integration of local values into the curriculum to foster a participatory, contextual, and emancipatory civic education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how the values of religious moderation are actualized in daily life in multi-ethnic schools in Medan City. The city of Medan, as a multicultural city, presents challenges as well as opportunities in fostering a tolerant and inclusive attitude among students from diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds. A qualitative approach was used in this study with case study methods in several secondary schools that represented this diversity. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, in-depth interviews with teachers, principals, and students, and analysis of curriculum and school program documents. Data analysis techniques are carried out with the following steps: Data reduction, data presentation, data verification, and a conclusion drawn. Then, the data is processed using the ATLAS.ti 9 application. The results of the study show that the actualization of the value of religious moderation is reflected through the integration of tolerance materials in religious learning and PPKn, strengthening the role of teachers as agents of moderation, and the implementation of interfaith and cultural activities that strengthen social harmony. However, this study also found a number of challenges, such as the lack of teacher training in religious moderation and the external influence of social media that contains intolerance content. Therefore, synergy between schools, the government, and the community is needed to support the sustainability of religious moderation practices in a more systematic and sustainable manner.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the implementation of the zoning system for new student admissions (PPDB) in public senior high schools in the Special Capital Region of Jakarta from 2022 to 2024, with a focus on the role of school principals in executing the policy. Employing a quantitative approach with an evaluative design, the research assesses the effectiveness, fairness, and challenges of the zoning system. The population of the study consists of 119 high school principals across four cities in the Jakarta region. Using stratified random sampling, the entire population was involved as the research sample. Data were collected through structured interviews and questionnaire instruments distributed to the principals. Additionally, supporting data from the Jakarta Education Office and related literature were used to strengthen the analysis. The collected data were processed using SPSS software to test the validity and reliability of the instruments and to perform descriptive statistical analysis. The findings show that while the zoning system has succeeded in promoting equal access to education, several challenges persist, including uneven school quality, limited capacity in certain zones, and a lack of socialization among stakeholders. Most principals agree that improvements are needed in policy implementation, especially in ensuring transparency and infrastructure readiness. The study concludes that although the zoning system supports educational equity, it requires continuous evaluation and refinement to optimize its impact in diverse urban settings like Jakarta.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the process of understanding Islamic education through the Sunday Morning Study (Kajian Ahad Pagi) at At-Taqwa Muhammadiyah Mosque in Blitar City, as well as its impact on the lives of the congregation. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach and utilizes a case study design. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, which involves data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the process of reinforcing religious understanding is carried out through the delivery of materials relevant to daily life using lecture and discussion methods. These methods enable the congregation not only to receive information but also to internalize Islamic values in their everyday lives. The impact of this study is evident in changes in the congregation's behavior, including improved religious understanding, increased patience, heightened social awareness, and active participation in religious and social activities within the community. This study affirms that community-based Islamic education, particularly through religious studies held in mosques, is highly effective in shaping a pious and morally upright society. These findings may serve as a valuable reference for developing non-formal Islamic education programs in other mosques.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum on student engagement and academic performance in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) learning at Wangiwisata Public Elementary School, located in Bandung Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The research adopts a quantitative approach with a pretest-posttest design. Data were obtained through student engagement questionnaires, academic performance tests, and teacher interviews. The population consisted of fourth- and fifth-grade students in elementary schools that had implemented the Merdeka Curriculum for at least one academic year. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, focusing specifically on students and teachers from Wangiwisata Public Elementary School. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to measure changes in engagement and academic performance, and Pearson correlation to examine the relationship between these two variables. Thematic analysis was applied to qualitative data from teacher interviews. The results indicate a notable increase in student engagement across cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions, with an average increase of over 20%. Academic performance also improved, particularly in critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Teachers reported greater flexibility in designing learning activities, and the active learning approach promoted by the curriculum enabled students to relate learning materials to real-life contexts. These findings suggest that the Merdeka Curriculum has the potential to enhance both student engagement and academic outcomes when implemented effectively, especially in the context of public elementary education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the application of Islamic Critical Thinking as an approach in the inquiry-based learning model within the traditional Islamic educational environment (dayah), with a case study at Dayah Jamiah Al-Aziziyah Bireuen, Aceh. In the context of the modernization of Islamic education, the reinforcement of critical thinking rooted in Islamic values has become an urgent necessity to shape a generation of santri who are intellectual, reflective, and reasoned. This research employs a qualitative method with a field study approach. Primary data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with teachers and dayah leaders, and documentation of learning activities. Data sources consisted of key informants (teachers and dayah leaders) and supporting informants (santri). The data analysis technique was conducted inductively through stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the integration of Islamic Critical Thinking values—such as open-mindedness, truth-seeking, and ethics of dialogue—into the inquiry-based learning model significantly enhances active participation, intellectual sensitivity, and the depth of students' understanding of Islamic materials. Moreover, the dayah caretakers and teachers play a central role in guiding the process of critical thinking based on revelation and the Islamic scientific tradition. These findings make a significant contribution to the development of an Islamic education model that is responsive to contemporary challenges while remaining firmly rooted in Islamic values.
