Abstract

Hand skin that is often exposed to the sun easily loses moisture and is more rough. Hand cream is a care product that is applied to the palms and backs of the hands that can help restore hydration and skin function due to dry and rough skin. Pineapple peel contains flavonoids, vitamin C, and bromelain enzymes that has potential to be formulated into anti-aging preparations. This research aims to formulate ethanol extract of pineapple peel (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) into hand cream and to test the effectiveness as anti-aging agent. This research included making extracts by percolation method using 70% ethanol solvent, testing the antioxidant activity of pineapple peel extract using DPPH method, and hand cream formulations with the addition of pineapple peel extract with respective concentration of 0% (F0), 5% (F1), 7.5% (F2), and 10% (F3). Evaluation of hand cream preparations included organoleptic test, homogeneity, emulsion type, pH, viscosity, and physical stability at room temperature storage for 12 weeks and cycling test. Anti-aging effectiveness testing was carried out during the 4 weeks treatment period, by measuring parameters such as moisture, pores, blemishes and wrinkles on the skin of the backs of volunteers' hands which were measured once a week using a skin analyzer. The results of the antioxidant activity test of the ethanol extract of pineapple peel were included in the strong category with an IC50 value of 88.21 µg/mL. Abstract

Skincare is currently a major focus in the beauty industry with skin exfoliation being an important step. One product used to exfoliate the skin is a body scrub, which contains ingredients such as himalayan salt and cinnamon bark extract. Himalayan salt helps remove dead skin cells and moisturizes the skin, while cinnamon extract has antimicrobial properties that can protect the skin from bacteria. This study aims to formulate and test the effectiveness of body scrub with skin analyzer and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. This research uses an experimental method with several stages, namely plant material collection, plant identification, powder making, extract making, preparation making, evaluation and stability, effectiveness test with skin analyzer and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The 10% body scrub has better effectiveness than 0%; 2.5% and 5% which obtained a percent increase in skin moisture (71.62%), a decrease in the number of blemishes on the skin (70.73%) and a decrease in pore size on the skin (76.38%) for 4 weeks of treatment. In testing antibacterial activity, the 10% concentration was also considered the optimal concentration because it had the greatest inhibition of 14.20 ± 0.59 mm. The results concluded that Himalayan salt and cinnamon bark extract can be formulated into a body scrub dosage form that meets the stability requirements and has the effectiveness in moisturizing, smoothing, and brightening the skin. The formula that has the most effective antibacterial activity is a body scrub containing extracts with a concentration of 10% against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

Abstract

Antibacterials are substances that can interfere with the growth or even kill bacteria and have the side effect of antibacterial resistance. One effort to reduce resistance is choosing to use natural bacterial ingredients. One plant that can potentially contain antibacterial activity is malacca leaves (Phyllanthus emblica). The contents of this plant include flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and steroids/triterpenoids. This research aimed to prove the antibacterial activity test of malacca leaf extract. The stages in this research included phytochemical screening and testing the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract from Malacca leaves for Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria using the diffusion method using paper discs. The characteristics of malacca leaf simplicia obtained were water content of 4.6%, water-soluble content of 28%, ethanol-soluble essence content of 23.33%, total ash content of 2.00%, and insoluble ash content of 0.5%. The results of phytochemical screening showed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, and steroids/triterpenoids. The antibacterial test results of malacca leaf extract at concentrations of 500 mg/ml, 400 mg/ml, 300 mg/ml, and 200 mg/ml have an antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, and there is no difference in the effectiveness of the inhibitor against gram-positive and negative grams.
