Abstract

The prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents is rising globally, leading to short- and long-term health issues such as type 2 diabetes (Type 2 DM). While obesity has multiple causes, modifiable lifestyle factors like diet and physical activity can reduce the risk Indonesian children are exposed to high-sugar, low-nutrient foods and engage in limited physical activity, increasing their risk for obesity and Type 2 DM. Although children depend on adults for food, they must learn to make healthy choices early on. This community service activity aimed to improve knowledge and promote healthy eating and physical activity among foster children at the Dharma Laksana Orphanage in Mataram City. A brief survey found that 33-60% of the children chose high-sugar foods over healthier options. Education was delivered through presentations and a custom-developed board game, "Pilah Pilih" (Select and Choose), which included a storybook and guide. Forty children and two caregivers participated. Post-activity evaluations showed 60% of children scored above 70 in knowledge assessments, with a highest score of 85. Feedback on the game indicated positive engagement and enthusiasm for replay. The "Pilah Pilih" board game shows potential as an effective educational tool to encourage behavioral change through repeated play.

Abstract

Education is the spearhead of a nation's progress. To succeed in life, a person must have an education because skills will be born. It motivated the author and team to conduct community service activities, especially English training for foster children at the Special Child Development Institution (LPKA) Class II Pangkalpinang. So far, foster children have only received written material (theory) yet to be practised. In addition, the media for delivering the material still needs to support learning activities. Community service activities in English training are present for foster children at LPKA Class II Pangkalpinang so they can learn practical English. In addition, strengthening English skills can be their capital in the future. This training uses a direct practice method and collaborates with the English community. Meetings are held every week and continue once a month. The material taught is about everyday conversation. From several training meetings, students were very enthusiastic about learning practice. Some foster children have even been able to practice speaking in English, introducing themselves well without looking at the text. This training continues to this day. There is a significant change in the foster children's abilities because the author and team use technological tools to deliver. It becomes one of the determining factors for the foster children's learning success.

Abstract

Coral reefs ecosystem degradation in Saleh Bay results from human impacts such as coral quarrying, dredging, dynamite fishing, tourist damage and run-off of sediment, ship groundings, fertilizer and pesticides as a result of changing land-use. The aim of this project is to improve coral reef ecosystems through coral transplantation. The primary objectives of coral transplantation are to improve reef `quality' in terms of live coral cover, biodiversity and topographic complexity. This coral reef transplantation project was carried out in the waters of Saleh Bay. This project was carried out from June to July 2024. The stakeholders involved were universities, village governments, NGOs (Yayasan Bentang Alam Nusantara) and the Labuhan Kuris Village community. The FGD method was used to collect information from stakeholders and determine the role of each stakeholder. Coral reef transplantation uses table-shaped iron media. The coral species planted are acropora sp. Coral transplants are placed in the waters of Saleh Bay. The result of this activity is that there are two coral reef transplant units. The type planted is Acropora sp. The success of this activity is due to the collaboration between community groups, government and NGOs. Based on the evaluation results during the activity, it can be concluded that the coral reef transplantation in this activity was successfully carried out with the indicator of the planting of two coral transplant units using a rectangular iron frame media (table). The success of this activity was due to collaboration between stakeholders.

Abstract

The preschool period is the optimal period for children to show their interest and development in language, social interaction, and environmental exploration. It is important to recognize children's development and growth to optimize their potential, character and growth and development. This community service is carried out to facilitate schools and parents to better understand the condition of their students and children. This activity is also a preventive measure for children's development and growth problems. The method of this activity is in the form of a mentoring program, namely assessment and education about children's growth and development, children's learning styles, and parenting patterns, consultations, as well as providing guidance on detecting children's growth and development and psychology to schools. Activities were carried out on May 11, July 6, July 13, and July 30 2024. The measurement results showed that most children had the average intelligence category (63.64%), most of the children's development and growth measurements were in the normal category, namely as many as 21 children (63.64%), the highest nutritional status was normal nutritional status, 26 children (78.79%), and the visual learning style that most students had, namely 17 children (51.52%). All types of parenting styles are democratic. Regarding the effectiveness of education, it shows that there is no significant difference in results (t= -0.977; p= >0.05). This means that providing education has no influence on parents' knowledge regarding physical development, psychological development and parenting styles. The conclusion of this mentoring activity is that it is able to facilitate the school and parents to recognize the condition of students and children. However, regarding the objectives of the mentoring process, it can be said that it has not been successful due to several weak factors in this activity, such as many educational participants not attending, and some assessment data not being identified. Key words: growth and development, learning styles, parenting patterns

Abstract

Currently agricultural production is not only focused on rice fields or gardens with a certain area. The availability of rice fields for farming according to the National Land Agency of Sleman Regency from 2016-2018 has decreased. Alternative farming in the era of millennial farmers is developing with the hydroponic method. Vegetable Farm or commonly called VEFAR has implemented a farming model using hydroponic techniques since 2019. Starting from land measuring 1000 M2 VEFAR has expanded its business to 2000 M2. The increasing number of hydroponic racks built by VEFAR has obstacles in the irrigation system. The irrigation system is still manual making irrigation for the racks late which has an impact on the adequacy of water for hydroponic plants. Agricultural technology has opened up many opportunities to increase efficiency and productivity one of which is through the use of Arduino-based automation systems. This Community Service aims to implement and teach the use of Arduino technology in an automatic water pump system for hydroponic plants. This system is designed to address the problem of inefficient and often inconsistent manual watering especially By connecting soil moisture and water level sensors to an Arduino microcontroller the system can automatically identify the amount of water needed by plants and activate the water pump at the right time based on the data collected by the sensors. The solution offered to partners is to utilize Arduino-based technology to create a water discharge controller and automatic irrigation pump in the VEFAR greenhouse. The results of the application of this technology show a significant increase in the productivity of hydroponic plants especially in terms of more consistent and efficient growth. In addition this Community Service shows that the use of an Arduino-based automatic water pump system is more efficient and environmentally friendly than conventional methods. It is hoped that education about the application of this technology will increase the understanding of VEFAR partners about the importance of technological innovation in the agricultural sector

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic, non-communicable metabolic disease with increasing prevalence and morbidity rates. There has been a 2% increase in DM prevalence among the population aged 15 years and older, with the highest prevalence found in DKI Jakarta (2.3%). Patients' understanding or knowledge of DM and its risk factors is closely related to the incidence of type II DM. The influence of education on public knowledge and the incidence of type II DM has also been widely demonstrated. This study was conducted to map the profile of Random Blood Glucose (RBG) levels and the knowledge of the residents of Kelurahan Kembangan Utara, West Jakarta, regarding the risk factors for type II DM and preventive measures. Methods: Community education was carried out through a mini-seminar on type II DM risk factors and prevention, followed by a questionnaire to assess knowledge, RBG testing, and consultation on the interpretation of the results, as well as the distribution of educational pamphlets as visual aids. Results and Conclusion: Respondents' knowledge about good nutrition as a preventive measure for type II DM was found to be lacking. However, their knowledge of type II DM risk factors and RBG levels was considered fairly good (75 and 112 mg/dL). The study also showed no significant differences in RBG levels among respondents with questionnaire scores of 60, 80, and 100 (p≥0.05), although the median RBG level in the 60-score group was the highest. Clinically, this could be interpreted to suggest that respondents with the lowest scores had the highest RBG levels.

Abstract

Shallots are a manipulation of local wisdom found in Grobogan Regency. One of the largest shallot planting centers in Grobogan Regency is Genangadal Village. The weak low bargaining position due to oversupply during the big harvest caused a drop in prices received by farmers. As an effort to provide solutions to these challenges, it is necessary to empower people to create a creative economy through processed product innovation. This activity aims to conduct training and assistance related to innovation in processing shallot-based products. In addition, it conducts training and assists in developing good product marketing strategies. The stages carried out in this service are Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with farmer groups, demonstrations and practices in making various preparations from shallots, tutorials and assistance on good marketing strategies, and monitoring and evaluation. Based on the training results, the potential of shallots, which was initially not optimally utilized by farmers, has now been optimized for use in products with high economic value. The shallots that have been processed are onion crackers and onion paste. In addition, farmers have also learned good product marketing strategies. This activity improves farmers' skills in producing various processed products with high economic value. In addition, the farmers also gained knowledge about the product's marketing strategy. This is undoubtedly a new market opportunity for farmers; when the price of shallots plummets, they don't have to worry anymore because they can take advantage of the harvest by making processed products with economic value.
