Abstract

The problem of household plastic waste and the low utilization of home yards as a source of healthy food is still prevalent in Mendana Raya Village, Keruak District, East Lombok Regency. This condition causes environmental pollution as well as community dependence on vegetable supplies from the market. One alternative solution is utilizing plastic bottles as simple hydroponic growing media, which can simultaneously provide nutritious vegetables for households. This activity aimed to reduce plastic waste generation and improve community skills in transforming plastic bottles into productive planting media. The method consisted of four stages: observation and problem identification, coordination and preparation, implementation of education and training through three meetings, and evaluation and monitoring. The results indicated positive changes within the community. A total of 150 plastic bottles were successfully converted into hydroponic media for lettuce, kale, and pakcoy. Participants showed high enthusiasm and were able to apply hydroponic planting skills independently at home. The positive response was also supported by village officials to ensure program sustainability. Therefore, the objectives of this community service program to provide solutions to environmental problems and to support the availability of nutritious food at the household level have been achieved.

Abstract

Maitara Village is a coastal area with abundant fisheries potential, especially tuna (Euthynnus affinis). However, its utilization is not optimal because it is still limited to fresh consumption and traditional processing, resulting in low economic value. On the other hand, household waste such as leftover rice is also still not optimally utilized. This is an opportunity in developing innovative food products based on local potential. This service activity aims to improve skills and community empowerment through training in making tuna rice crackers as an alternative to diversifying processed fisheries. The methods used include counseling, hands-on demonstration, and practice of product making by participants, who mostly consist of housewives, which was carried out on Maitara Island, Maitara Village, North Tidore Subdistrict, Tidore Islands City in July 2025. The results showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge and skills in processing local raw materials into valuable products. This activity also encourages changes in the mindset of the community about the importance of innovation, household waste management, and family economic empowerment. In conclusion, this training successfully provided an applicable and sustainable solution in developing local potential while reducing waste, as well as opening new entrepreneurial opportunities for the people of Maitara Village

Abstract

In aquaculture, using sustainable feed, especially feed produced from fishery waste, is an effective strategy for improving fish production performance and reducing disease susceptibility. Protein sourced from yellowfin tuna offal, bones, and by-products can be processed into fish protein hydrolysate in the form of fish meal. This raw material can then be used to produce alternative feed products. These products have economic value and can reduce the production costs of feed for white snapper fish farming among partner communities. Based on observations, the priority problems faced by the KUB Segara Guna Batu Lumbang fishermen group in their white snapper cultivation are: the suboptimal availability of independent feed, a lack of periodic water quality measurement, and low white snapper production performance. This community service program (PKM) aims to improve the knowledge and skills of the fishermen group in white snapper cultivation management through training in feed production, water quality monitoring, and production performance analysis. The PKM activities will be carried out from July to August 2025 at the Batu Lumbang Mangrove Ecotourism in Denpasar. Education will be provided through lectures and workshops, and partners' understanding will be measured through pre-tests and post-tests. The success of the program will be evaluated to determine if the activities of making alternative feed based on fishery waste, water quality management, and production performance analysis can significantly improve the partners' knowledge and skills (p≤0.05). This PKM program can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and Goal 14 (Life Below Water). Furthermore, this program aligns with the Government Program's Asta Cita Point 2, which aims to encourage national independence through food self-sufficiency sourced from the fisheries sector and to support a sustainable blue economy.
