Abstract

This study aims to develop questions from the Balaghah Ma’ani book using the Open-Ended approach with Quiz Whizzer media and to test their effectiveness in improving students’ creative thinking skills. The research method uses Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The research subjects were 35 students in class IX at the Nurussalam Sidogede Modern Islamic Boarding School in Palembang. The research instruments included expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and pre- and posttests. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics through the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Levene’s homogeneity test, and the Paired Sample t-test. The results showed that the questions developed were valid and suitable for use, as validated by material and media experts. Statistical testing showed a significant increase in students’ scores after using Quiz Whizzer media, with an average pretest score of 52.14 and a posttest score of 87.43. The paired t-test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (p 0.05), indicating a significant difference in learning outcomes before and after media use. Therefore, open-ended questions using the Quiz Whizzer media have been proven effective in improving students’ creative thinking skills in learning Islamic sciences.

Abstract

This study investigates the forms and functions of code-switching and code-mixing found in Maher Zain’s songs Ramadan and Eidun Saeed, which combine English and Arabic as part of a global religious musical expression. The research aims to identify and classify types of code-switching based on Poplack’s framework and types of code-mixing according to Muysken’s typology, and to understand the sociolinguistic motivations behind their use. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the data were collected through a close Reading of the official song lyrics available on digital music platforms. The analysis reveals that inter-sentential switching is the most dominant form in both songs, particularly noticeable in the transition between English verses and Arabic choruses. Code-mixing primarily takes the form of insertion, with Arabic lexical items embedded in English sentence structures to maintain religious authenticity and evoke spiritual nuance. The findings indicate that the multilingual style in these songs is not merely decorative but serves important communicative, aesthetic, and cultural purposes. Overall, this study concludes that Maher Zain’s use of language alternation functions as a strategy to strengthen religious meaning and connect diverse listeners across linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of the concept of mahabbah towards the Prophet Muhammad SAW in the poem Ṣallū ‘Alā Khayri Al-Bariyyati Khayman by Ibn al-Jinān using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic theory. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on the relationship between signs and signifiers in the formation of spiritual meanings related to mahabbah. The text of the poem Ṣallū ‘Alā Khayri Al-Bariyyati Khayman, obtained from the source of the madh nabawi poetry manuscript, is the primary source of research. Books, scientific journals, and articles discussing mahabbah and Saussure’s semiotics are used as supporting sources. Data collection techniques were carried out through documentation studies, namely by collecting, recording, and grouping linguistic signs in the poem text. Based on the research findings, this poem displays various expressions of mahabbah, such as adoration, longing, hope for intercession, and recognition of the glory and virtue of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. The system of signs, formed through word choice and stanza structure, shows how the meaning of mahabbah emerges through a systematic relationship between signs that complement each other. This study concludes that the poem is not only an expression of art, but also a medium of da’wah that strengthens love and respect for the Prophet Muhammad SAW.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of gamification in learning Arabic speaking skills (maharah al-kalam) at the Madrasah Aliyah level. Using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design, the research involved 60 tenth-grade students in Jombang, East Java, divided into an experimental group (gamification-based learning using the Quizizz platform and leaderboard) and a control group (traditional lecture and structured exercise-based learning). Data were collected through speaking skill tests, motivation and language anxiety questionnaires, participatory observation, and semi-structured interviews with teachers and students. Quantitative data were analyzed using independent t-tests and effect size calculations (Cohen's), while qualitative data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model. The results show that gamification significantly improved students' Arabic speaking skills (p < 0.05; d = 1.76) by fostering a low-anxiety, interactive, and student-centered learning environment. Student participation increased from 40% to over 85%, accompanied by gains in vocabulary mastery, speaking fluency, motivation, self-confidence, and emotional engagement. Effective activities included role-play, simulations, word-guessing games, and information gap tasks. The study concludes that systematic gamification integration is an effective pedagogical approach for enhancing oral communicative competence, highlighting the importance of teacher training to ensure sustainable learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to integrate the analysis of metaphors in the Quran with Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) introduced by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). The primary focus of the research is the analysis of four verses with legal dimensions, recommended by experts in Islamic interpretation and law for their complex metaphorical structure and legal impact. The research uses a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach that emphasizes cognitive linguistics and CMT. Corpus analysis was conducted in two stages: 1) revealing the structure of metaphors based on classical rhetoric, and 2) mapping conceptual metaphors through source and target domains. The main findings indicate that the metaphorical verses in the Quran exhibit a systematic conceptual-cognitive structure. For example, the phrase “aqimu sh-shalah” is interpreted as a metaphor for prayer as a building of faith; the phrase “wa la tas’amu an taktubuhu” represents the documentation of the contract as legally binding; the phrase “libas” is interpreted as a metaphor for the marital relationship, which can be understood across cultures; the phrase “faqtho’u aydiyahuma” represents the elimination of criminal potential. This analysis reveals that kinayah not only serves a rhetorical function but also shapes the conceptual framework of legal understanding. The impact of this research confirms that integrating classical balaghah with CMT can broaden the scope of comprehensive Quranic studies interpretation.

Abstract

This study aims to identify interpersonal meaning and linguistic politeness principles embedded in eschatological hadiths and to interpret the relationship between interpersonal meaning and politeness as a representation of Islamic values of da‘wah, communicative ethics, and moral guidance within eschatological discourse. Employing a descriptive qualitative method grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the study analyzes five selected hadiths collected through documentation and categorized based on their dialogic strategies. The analysis demonstrates that the Prophet Muhammad SAW consistently conveyed eschatological messages through linguistic structures that uphold politeness principles aligned with Leech’s maxims of Tact, Approbation, and sympathy, ensuring that admonitory and doctrinal messages were delivered with gentleness, empathy, and guidance-oriented communication. Furthermore, the findings reveal a clear distinction in the Prophet’s interpersonal speech patterns: interactions with his wives are characterized by intimate, personal, and emotionally nuanced expressions marked by moderate modality and soothing lexical choices, whereas his speech to the Companions tends to be more formal, instructive, and authoritative, employing more potent modality to reflect his pedagogical role and public leadership.

Abstract

This study examines the complex relationship between globalization and Arabic language education within Islamic Higher Education Institutions (IHEIs). This study employs a qualitative approach with library research methodology. Findings reveal that globalization presents dual impacts: challenges, including digital divides affecting 55% of rural Islamic institutions, the commodification of education threatening formative spiritual goals, and curriculum westernization often misaligned with classical literacy objectives; and opportunities through glocalization approaches integrating modern pedagogies with traditional goals. An analysis of successful programs at IIUM Malaysia, Gontor Indonesia, and Qatar Foundation identifies common success factors, including institutional vision, adequate resource allocation, qualified faculty, and the contextual adaptation of global practices to local needs. The study demonstrates that technology integration through blended learning, mobile applications, and open educational resources can enhance accessibility while maintaining pedagogical quality when implemented thoughtfully. Results show Arabic language education possesses strategic potential as a bridge between Islamic heritage preservation and global engagement through literacy-first approaches, culturally relevant materials, and positioning multilingual competence as an asset for global citizenship. This research contributes to the discourse on educational decolonization and heritage language revitalization, offering evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, institutions, educators, and researchers to enhance the quality, equity, and relevance of Arabic language education in the 21st century.
