Abstract

A deep comprehension of learning materials is vital for meaningful and lasting education. When understanding is lacking, learning becomes superficial and fails to leave a significant impact. This study investigates the challenges students encounter in comprehending Arabic texts at Al-Azhar Yogyakarta boarding school, focusing on the key factors that hinder their textual understanding. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis. The findings identify several obstacles to adequate comprehension, including linguistic challenges such as limited vocabulary, complex syntactic structures, and unfamiliarity with context. Pedagogical issues also emerged, particularly teaching methods that inadequately address diverse learner needs. Furthermore, student motivation and prior exposure to Arabic significantly influence their ability to engage with the texts. To address these issues, the study recommends strategies such as contextualized instruction, interactive teaching techniques, and personalized learning approaches. The results underscore the need for curricular reforms that integrate contemporary pedagogical practices and educational technologies. By confronting these challenges, the study aims to enhance students’ comprehension of Arabic texts, improve learning outcomes, and provide a foundation for future research on effective methods of Arabic language instruction in similar educational environments.

Abstract

Translating religious text involves negotiating religious identity to convey meaning across different languages and cultures while preserving spiritual values. Despite growing interest in translation studies, limited attention has been given to how this identity negotiation operates in classical Islamic texts. This study examines the negotiation of religious identity in the English translation of Bidayatul-Hidayah by Al-Ghazali and explores the cultural and theological factors that influence this process. Using a quality descriptive method with comparative and interpretative approaches, the study collects data through close reading, identification of religiously nuanced linguistic units, and organisation in a comparison table. The analysis includes the classification of religious identity markers, comparison between the source and target text, and interpretation based on social-cultural and theological context. The findings reveal seven patterns of religious identity negotiations: in religious practice, eschatological terms, moral concepts, religious groups, sacred artefacts, enlightenment terms, and religious figures. These negotiations reflect the cultural, theological, and value-systems differences between Arabic and English. The Study concludes that translating religious text requires a strategic negotiation of meaning to preserve spiritual integrity while ensuring contextual relevance tor the target audience.

Abstract

This study explores the evolution of nahwu (Arabic grammar) from a classical to a modern paradigm through a comparative analysis of the word classification systems developed by Imam Sibawaihi and Tamam Hassan. Sibawaihi’s traditional model, which categorizes words into three core types ism, fi‘l, and harf is grounded in formal grammatical structure. While foundational to Arabic grammar for centuries, this system tends to be overly broad and less responsive to the complexities of contemporary language use. In contrast, Tamam Hassan, influenced by modern functional linguistics, proposed a more nuanced system comprising seven categories: ism, fi‘l, shifah, dhamir, khalifah, dzarf, and adat. His classification emphasizes the functional roles of words in context, allowing for a more detailed analysis of meaning, expression, and interaction. Employing a qualitative descriptive-comparative method, this study analyzes both models through Halliday’s metafunctional framework ideational, interpersonal, and textual. The findings reveal that Hassan’s system offers distinct advantages in accounting for linguistic variation in contemporary contexts such as social media, journalistic writing, and business communication. Ultimately, Hassan’s functional model revitalizes nahwu as a dynamic and context-sensitive discipline that is better aligned with the communicative needs of modern Arabic users.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a significant role in education in the modern era. A platform called Classpoint AI (CAI) has been widely utilized across various educational levels and disciplines worldwide. Numerous studies have reported positive responses toward using CAI as an interactive learning medium and an automatic question generator based on Bloom’s Taxonomy. This study aims to analyze the quality of test items generated by CAI quantitatively. The accuracy of a test item must be empirically validated to ensure high-quality learning. A non-probability sampling technique, specifically total sampling, was employed to select 39 female students in Phase F as research participants. Data were collected through a test consisting of 14 multiple-choice questions created by CAI to assess reading comprehension proficiency in Arabic. An Ex-post facto method was used in this study, as the researcher did not modify the pre-programmed CAI system. Three software tools (SPSS, Anbuso, and Anates) were used to analyze the item quality, and teachervalidation was also included. The findings revealed that most of the test items generated by CAI were invalid and exhibited low reliability. The questions were predominantly classified as easy. CAI-generated items demonstrated poor discrimination power butcontained effective distractors. For foreign language learning, CAI-generated questions need to reconsider the complexity of the vocabulary used. Considering the widespread use of this platform among educators on an international scale, this study contributes a global perspective by highlighting the need for both developer evaluation and educator discernment in utilizing CAI.

Abstract

TikTok was selected as a learning platform due to its potential to foster an engaging educational environment that aligns with students' digital habits. This study aims to explore the use of the TikTok account marhaban.academy in teaching Arabic listening skills to students at Al-Azhar 29 BSB Islamic Preparatory School, as well as to evaluate its effectiveness. The research adopts a quasi-experimental quantitative design. Data were collected through observation and testing, including pre-tests and post-tests administered to eighth-grade students. The sample consisted of 50 students from classes VIII C and VIII D. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality and homogeneity tests, and an independent samples t-test. The hypothesis testing resulted in t count = 2.096, exceeding the critical value t table = 2.021 at a 0.05 significance level, indicating a significant improvement in students' listening skills. The findings demonstrate that TikTok, specifically marhaban.academy, serves as an effective medium for enhancing Arabic listening skills. Moreover, its popularity as a social media platform opens new opportunities for integrating Arabic language instruction across the four core skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—in schools, particularly at the junior high school level.

Abstract

Arabic language teaching in Indonesia continues to face persistent challenges, particularly in fostering student’s practical and communicative competencies. One promising approach to addres this issue is language immersion, which places learners in environments that simulate native Arabic usage. This article delves into explores the implementation of language immersion in Arabic learning within bilingual environment settings. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis, including syllabi and records of learning activities. The analysis followed the BJOG Perspectives on Qualitative Research framework, encompassing stages of initial coding, thematic categorization, and reflective narrative interpretation. Results demonstrate that language immersion significantly enhances students' Arabic proficiency, particularly in speaking, listening, and active participation. Student exhibited increased confidence in using Arabic not only in formal classroom contexts but also in everyday interactions. These outcomes underscore the importance of sustained language exposure, authentic social interaction, and context-rich learning in second language acquisition. This study offers a novelty contribution by highlighting how language immersion is applied in the distinctive environment of bilingual pesantren, where classroom instruction is integrated with students’ daily routines. The synergy between structured academic activities and natural language use in dormitory life fosters a comprehensive and continuous learning experience. This model, blending formal instruction with informal immersion, remains underexplored in prior research and presents a valuable framework for Arabic language education in similar contexts.

Abstract

The advancement of digital technology has significantly reshaped the dissemination of Islamic knowledge. Texts that were once confined to formal religious institutions are now widely accessible through global digital platforms. This study explores the dynamics of Islamic text circulation in the digital age and its implications for Islamic education, particularly in the field of Arabic language instruction.
