Abstract

This study aims to describe and compare the anatomical structure of mangrove leaves of Avicennia lanata Ridl. and Sonneratia alba J.E. Smith in the coastal area of Central Siney Village, South Tinombo District, Parigi Moutong Regency. This study used a quantitative descriptive approach and was conducted at the Biology Education Laboratory, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tadulako University in November 2024. The research samples were A. lanata and S. alba mangrove leaves collected from the research location, with data obtained through microscopic observation, documentation, and questionnaires. The results showed that there were differences in the anatomical structure of the leaves of the two mangrove species, especially in the type of stomata, the thickness of mesophyll tissue, and the development of salt glands. Avicennia lanata has actinocytic stomata and more developed salt glands, while Sonneratia alba has cyclic stomata and thicker pole tissue. Both have similar basic leaf structures, such as cuticle, epidermis, cortex, and xylem and phloem transport tissues. Thus, there are distinctive anatomical adaptations in each species, reflecting survival strategies in the mangrove ecosystem.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Project Based Learning learning model using Mind Mapping on student learning outcomes in class VIII of SMP Negeri 5 Bolano Lambunu. This research method is a quasi-experiment (Quasi Experiment) with a Non-equivalent (Pretest and Posttest) Control Group Design. The sample of this study was 34 students, consisting of 17 students in the experimental class who used the Project Based Learning learning model using Mind Mapping and 17 students in the control class who used the conventional learning model. Data collection was carried out by conducting observations, interviews, and tests. Data analysis used prerequisite tests, namely, normality tests and homogeneity tests and hypothesis testing using the Independent Sample t-test and N-gain tests. The results of the study showed that (1) there was an effect of using the Project Based Learning learning model using Mapping on student learning outcomes. This is evidenced by a significant increase in student learning outcomes in the experimental class, with an average posttest score reaching 73.23, while the control class was only 64.70. The t-test shows a p value < 0.05, which means that the implementation of the Project Based Learning model using Mapping has a positive effect on student learning outcomes. (2) N-gain analysis shows that the experimental class has an average N-gain score of 0.65 (65%), which is included in the fairly effective category, while the control class is only 0.51 (51%), which indicates a less effective category. Thus, it can be concluded that the Project Based Learning learning model using Mind Mapping is effective and can affect student learning outcomes in the science subject of class VIII-B SMP Negeri 5 Bolano Lambunu.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of Team Games Tournament (TGT) cooperative learning model assisted by Mysterious Card Box (KOKAMI) media on students' Biology Science learning activities and outcomes at SMP Negeri 19 Palu. Teacher-centered learning models tend to reduce student interaction and participation, so a more active and innovative approach is needed, such as TGT with KOKAMI media to improve student learning activities and outcomes. The research method used was quasi-experiment with post-test only control group design. Data were collected through activity observations and learning outcome tests, with samples taken purposively. Data analysis was carried out quantitatively through comparison of the average scores of experimental and control classes. The t-test results using SPSS ver.29 showed a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.001 < α 0.05. Thus, the alternative hypothesis (H1) which states that there is a significant difference in activity and learning outcomes between the experimental and control classes is accepted. This shows that the application of the TGT cooperative model assisted by KOKAMI media has a real effect in increasing the activity and learning outcomes of Biological Science. This model has the potential to be applied more widely to improve the quality of science learning at the secondary school level.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the potential of yellow sweet potato skin extract as an active ingredient in topical hand cream preparations and to analyze the physical characteristics of the preparation. Extraction of active substances is carried out through a maceration process with 70% ethanol solvent for 3 days to obtain optimal extract from sweet potato skin. The hand cream formulation uses two concentrations of sweet potato skin extract, namely 2% and 4%, which are tested with several physical quality parameters. Organoleptic testing shows that the hand cream is soft, easily absorbed, and homogeneous. The pH test results had an average of 5.5 in all three replications, the viscosity in non-concentration showed results of 9381 mPas, F1 15976 mPas, and F2 19618 mPas, and the spreadability showed 5.3 in all three replications. The conclusion of this study is that the formulation of yellow sweet potato skin extract shows good physical characteristics or is considered to meet SNI standards. The implications of these results indicate that yellow sweet potato skin extract can be developed as a promising natural active ingredient in the formulation of skin care products, especially hand cream.

Abstract

This study aims to explores blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels in Wistar rats exposed to synthetic and organic MSG to identify potential renoprotective effects. The study design involved a control group (K) that was fed a normal diet only, and six treatment groups (P1–P6) that received doses of organic or synthetic MSG at 60, 120, or 240 mg/kg BW for 19 days. Each group consisted of six rats. MSG was administered orally and BUN levels were measured using the colorimetric method. The results showed no significant difference in BUN levels between the control group and the treatment groups (p > 0.05). The highest BUN levels were found in the control group, while the lowest levels were found in the group that received the highest dose of synthetic MSG (240 mg/kg BW). Additionally, BUN levels were lower with organic MSG at 120 and 240 mg/kg BW than with the 60 mg/kg BW dose, suggesting that bioactive compounds in tempeh and pineapple bromelain may have renoprotective effects. While the lowest BUN levels were observed in the group receiving the highest dose of synthetic MSG (240 mg/kg BW), this may be due to reduced protein intake or other metabolic adaptations rather than safety factors. Synthetic MSG at a dose of 240 mg/kg BW produced the lowest BUN levels, which may indicate reduced protein intake or other metabolic adaptations, rather than safety factors.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the antihyperlipidemic effect of a combination of red betel extract and sambiloto herb in an experimental animal model of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). This study was a randomized pre-post-test experiment with a control group design on 25 male Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats experienced T2DM with a high-fat diet for 14 days and Streptozotocin (STZ) induction of 55 mg/kgBW preceded by nicotinamide (NA) 100 mg/kgBW. We confirmed T2DM if the rats' fasting glucose levels were less than 200 mg/dl. The rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: negative control (K1), positive control (K2), combination of red betel leaf and sambiloto herb extract 75:25 (P1), 50:50 (P2), and 25:75 (P3). The combination of red betel leaf and sambiloto herb extract at any dose was able to significantly reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels (p<0.05). The combined extract of red betel leaf and sambiloto herb at a ratio of 75:25 yielded the effective dose for reducing total cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and LDL. In T2DM rats, the combination of these extracts has the potential to increase total cholesterol, LDL, and triglyceride levels.
