Abstract

The focus of the analysis is to identify and describe the various types of processes within the Experiential Function in the song's lyrics. Data source for this study is the song's lyrics, obtained from reliable sources such as the artist's official YouTube channel, Google, and various music applications. The lyrics are transcribed and used for identifying and categorizing the experiential processes found in the song. The data analysis method used in this research is qualitative analysis. It involves analyzing each clause in the lyrics and classifying them based on the Experiential Function's categories. The Experiential Function analysis helps to understand how the songwriter expresses their experiences, emotions, and perceptions through language in the song. This analysis of the Experiential Function in the song "A Year Ago" provides a comprehensive understanding of the songwriter's expressions of experiences and emotions, contributing to a deeper appreciation and interpretation of the song's lyrics. Abstract

This research discussed the Buginese and Javanese phonological interference and the factors that influenced that case from the students in senior high school. The method that was used in this research was qualitative research. The researchers collected the data with nine fricative consonants (f, v, ?, ð, s, z, ?, ?, h) by reading test, recording and interview, then analyzed with the theory by Weinreich (1979). The object was the Buginese and Javanese students of Senior High School 2 of East Luwu. The data showed that phonological interference produced by Buginese and Javanese are only two of three kinds of phonological interference by Crystal (2003). From Buginese students, the researchers only found one category of phonological interference which was sound replacements on consonant {f}, meanwhile on Javanese students found two categories of phonological interference, that were sound addition on sound {h} and sound replacement on sound {?}. On the other hand, there are two factors that caused phonological interference of Buginese and Javanese students in this research, such as bilingual background and disloyalty to the target language. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to put to the test a self-efficacy survey of four language skills (listening, speaking, writing, and reading) using the Jigsaw Learning Strategy. This study was a descriptive qualitative study in which 20 question items about self-efficacy and four language skills in English mastery for health vocational students are tested. This qualitative study was carried out in two classrooms with 39 health vocational students each from January 2021 to August 2022. Two classrooms were set up for the lecture group, one for Jigsaw and one for non-Jigsaw. Self-efficacy questionnaires were used to gather information. In the learning group, there were fourteen sessions totaling two hours, during which each class learned the same practice and comprehension material. Four language skills were worked on by the students. The questionnaire data was analyzed by the product moment to determine validity, and all were found to be valid with results greater than the value of the r table and less than 0.025. The reliability test results on questionnaire data revealed that the data were reliable or consistent. The Keiser-Meyers-Oklin Self-Efficacy Measure in the group of questions for all questionnaire items could be considered appropriate. The Measure of Sampling Adequacy results were also used to determine whether the self-efficacy variable was large enough for further analysis. The communality value was greater than 0.03, indicating a positive relationship between variables. Descriptive analysis, jigsaw classes respond better to self-efficacy surveys than non-jigsaw classes, implying increased self-confidence in the English learning process. Abstract

The article was to determine the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) based assessment in speaking and reading in English language learning in distance learning system. The method used qualitative research with a field study design. Collecting data through observation and interview. This research was conducted at SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Makassar with twenty English teachers. The results showed that the HOTS-based assessment in speaking and reading in English language learning within a distance learning system was carried out effectively by the English teachers. However, there were several challenges encountered during implementation, including technological limitations. Distance learning requires a stable internet connection and adequate devices, but not all students have good access to the internet, which can hinder teachers in effectively conducting speaking and reading assessments. Additionally, not all students have sufficient audio or video devices to participate in speaking assessments, which can hinder their ability to practice speaking clearly and listen well. Furthermore, there were challenges in providing direct and individual feedback in distance learning. In speaking assessments, timely and direct feedback is crucial for students to correct mistakes and improve their speaking skills. However, in distance learning, feedback was often given in written form or through recorded videos, which can result in delays and limit students' opportunities for improvement. Abstract

Unexpected shift to emergency remote teaching (ERT) engendered a complex situation for all schools around the globe, in particular those with inadequate prior experience of this distant online learning mode. Whilst the bulk of research has dealt with ERT practices in various school contexts, this issue in Indonesian pesantren – a type of Islamic boarding school which provides full-time comprehensive religious educational activities but have considerably lack of practice in distance online learning – remains underexplored. This qualitative study addressed this gap by unpacking English language teachers’ voices and experiences in ERT in pesantren school contexts. The study was conducted during school closure in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its data were generated through open ended questionnaires and analyzed using six-phase thematic analysis. The findings show that the teachers indicated positive attitude toward ERT. Despite several challenges, they expressed opportunities that might potentially contribute to the better enactment of ERT in pesantren learning process. Abstract

The paper is to explain linguistical image of Rudyard Kipling in the poetry “The Ballad of East and West” and to relate with family of language over the world. It is found, the words “west” and “east” refer to the different location but it is from the similar pronunciation. It like “atala” in Sanskrit, “od” in Greek, and has relation with the word “Atlantic” in English. The data will be approached by the philosophy of language, particularly in the perspective of the fixed thing (Greek: esse) and the changed thing (percipi). The result, the word has the same essence. The trace of family of the word “east” and “west” could be proved in the language of Austronesian, particularly in Javanese poem. There is hybridity of reality in the area of language in the world. It could be recommended that an evidence in language is a medium of learning related with education, culture, and reality of Austronesian. Abstract

Anxiety in language teaching and learning is not a new issue. However, there is little information about the anxiety faced by English as a foreign language (EFL) novice teacher, especially in Indonesian context. This study aims to find out the causes of anxiety in teaching English, strategies to overcome this anxiety, and school support in helping teachers manage their anxiety. This qualitative study used an online closed-ended questionnaires and interviews for data collection. Sixteen EFL novice teachers from seven junior high schools and nine senior high schools in Medan, Indonesia participated in this study. The findings reveal three causes of teaching anxiety experienced by the novice teachers, namely: student participation and class situation; material mastery; and lack of confidence. To overcome their anxiety, the teachers used some strategies which include better teaching preparation, establishing communication with students, doing warm up and ice breaking, and creating study groups. In relation to these findings, school support such as provision of teaching/learning resources and facilities, discretion to teachers, and teaching training could aid novice teachers manage their anxiety. Abstract

This research was intended to find out the kinds of maxim on students’ conversation at grade eleven of State of Vocational High School (SMK Negeri) 1 Pematangsiantar. This research used descriptive qualitative which the data were obtained through students' conversations about expressing opinions. The subject of this research was the students of SMK Negeri 1 Pematangsiantar at grade eleven in the academic year 2023/2024. The instrument of this research was mobile phone, because the classroom interaction flows quickly, mobile phone was needed to help capturing students’ conversation. The data were collected by using the voice recordings and the transcripts. The data were analyzed based on students' conversations, then classified based on the maxims used in the conversation into each type of maxim, the maxims are then calculated to find the dominant maxim. The result of this research showed that the students used maxim of quantity (18,8%), maxim of quality (21,9%), maxim of relation (6,3%) and maxim of manner (18,8%). It showed that the students’ conversation dominant used maxim of quality in their conversation to express opinions. Keywords: Pragmatic Analysis, Maxim on Coversation, Expressing Opinions

Abstract

The problems discussed in this study are based on variations in verb meaning in west Papuan speech, namely Irires and Miyah Language. These two languages are in one area in Tambarauw Regency but have different verbs. For this reason, a study of verb and hyponymy categories is needed in morphology studies to identify variations in verb meaning in Irires and Miyah languages. This research was conducted to find out socio-cultural variations in verb meaning in the West Papuan language, namely Irires and Miyah. The researchers used qualitative, in the Iris and Miyah districts of the Tambarauw Regency. Data collection techniques were carried out by observation, interview, and documentation techniques by participating directly with the Irires and Miyah communities, supported by relevant research references as a complement to information. The instrument was an instrument in the form of a list of questions to record the classification of verb variations in prices and Miyah language. Triangulation methods carry out data analysis techniques by transcribing the results of recording variations in the pronunciation of Irires and Miyah languages which are then represented in good language and understood. The results of the study showed the use of Irires and Miyah eating verbs that resulted in verb structures that have a pronominal persona that has a practical name including {d}, {b}, {a,i,u,e,o}, {g}, {ig}, {m}, {n}, {p}, {t}. Abstract

This research explores the song "Better Man" by Westlife to uncover its experiential meaning and how it impacts the audience. Using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework, the study analyzes the song's meaning by examining the processes, participants, and circumstances in the lyrics. Qualitative content analysis is employed to identify various emotional experiences expressed through language. The study involves deconstructing each sentence to understand how participants, processes, and circumstances are used in the song. The primary data source is the authentic lyrics from reliable sources like official songbooks and verified lyric websites to ensure accuracy. The SFL theory helps examine experiential meta function and its components in the lyrics, considering the entire complexity of language in social contexts. The analysis reveals that "Better Man" predominantly employs mental processes, reflecting the singer's personal thoughts and perspectives. The use of verbs like "love," "say," and "hidden" effectively conveys emotions and interactions between individuals. The song's participants, such as "better man" and "her," create emotional connections with listeners. The findings emphasize the importance of language as an expressive tool in art and music, guiding songwriters in effectively communicating deeper messages and meanings. Song lyrics, with their emotional storytelling, establish powerful connections with the audience. While this study offers valuable insights into "Better Man," there is potential for further research. Analyzing more songs and genres can deepen the understanding of how language conveys experiences and emotions in music's broader context.
