Abstract

Diabetes mellitus continues to be a major global health challenge due to its high prevalence and steady increase in cases. Effective management of DM can be achieved by strengthening self-care, primarily through improved knowledge. Health promotion has a vital role in enhancing awareness and disease management, particularly when delivered through video media that is visually engaging and aligned with technological progress. This study aimed to examine the impact of health education using video media in the Samarinda local language on the knowledge of DM patients at Baqa Health Center. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed, involving 52 participants recruited through consecutive sampling who met the inclusion criteria. Data were obtained using the DKQ-24 (Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire) consisting of 24 items. The Wilcoxon statistical test was applied with a significance level of α = 0.05. Findings revealed that the mean score prior to the intervention was 1.21, which rose to 2.54 following the intervention (ρ = 0.000). The significant increase demonstrates that health promotion through videos in the Samarinda dialect is highly effective in improving knowledge among DM patients at Baqa Health Center.

Abstract

Jejuno-ileal atresia (JIA) is one of the leading causes of neonatal bowel obstruction. Over the last decade, mortality has decreased, with recent studies reporting a mortality rate of 11%. This study aimed to evaluate factors affecting mortality among patients with JIA. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on all JIA patients admitted between January 2019 and December 2024. Demographic variables including gestational age (prematurity ≤36 weeks), birth weight (low birth weight/LBW ≤2,500 grams), sepsis, and location of atresia were analyzed in relation to mortality using Chi-square and logistic regression tests. Thirty neonates (15 boys and 15 girls) were included. Primary anastomosis was performed in 18 patients (60%), while 12 patients (40%) underwent stoma formation. The mean time to achieve full enteral feeding was 10.23 days (range 6–35 days). Mortality occurred in 17 of 30 patients (56.7%), of which 9 were premature, 11 were LBW, and 13 had sepsis. Jejunal atresia was found in 8 patients with 5 deaths, while ileal atresia was present in 22 patients with 12 deaths. Sepsis showed a significant association with mortality (p= 0.030), and combined LBW and prematurity were also significantly associated (p= 0.010). Multivariate analysis revealed that LBW and prematurity were independent predictors of mortality. In conclusion, while sepsis was significantly associated with mortality in univariate analysis, LBW and prematurity emerged as significant predictors in multivariate analysis.

Abstract

Complementary feeding (MP-ASI) is provided as a supplement to meet the nutritional needs of infants that can no longer be optimally fulfilled by breast milk alone. As a supplement to breast milk, MP-ASI plays an important role in supporting the growth and development of infants after reaching six months of age. Although breastfeeding is recommended to continue until the child reaches two years old, various factors such as maternal knowledge, attitudes, and habits greatly influence MP-ASI feeding practices. Based on data from the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas), only about 35% of infants in Indonesia received exclusive breastfeeding, while the practice of providing complementary foods was recorded at 45%. The low level of parental knowledge regarding proper MP-ASI practices is suspected to be related to factors such as education level, limited access to information, and strong cultural influences. These have become the main challenges in promoting appropriate MP-ASI practices. This study aimed to identify the factors influencing the provision of complementary feeding among children aged 6–24 months in Murnaten Village, West Seram Regency. The study used a cross-sectional design with a total sampling technique, involving all mothers with children aged 6–24 months, with a total of 40 respondents. The results showed a significant relationship between maternal knowledge, attitudes, and habits with MP-ASI feeding practices (p < 0.005).

Abstract

Tympanic membrane perforation is a significant clinical concern that can lead to hearing impairment and recurrent ear infections. This study aims to review the roles of Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF), fibroblasts, keratinocytes, granulation tissue, and collagen density during the wound-healing phases of the tympanic membrane.A Systematic Journal Review was conducted by analyzing studies retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases published between 2020 and 2025. Of the 400 records screened,, 10 studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings revealed that IL-1β plays a key role in the inflammatory phase by modulating immune responses and recruiting healing cells. FGF stimulates fibroblast and keratinocyte proliferation, which are essential for extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling and re-epithelialization. Moreover, granulation tissue formation and collagen deposition are critical determinants of structural integrity and healing quality. Overall, tympanic membrane repair requires synergistic interactions among molecular mediators, cellular components, and biomaterial support to optimize tissue regeneration. These findings provide a scientific basis for developing more effective regenerative and tissue-engineering strategies for middle ear therapy.

Abstract

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the clinical outcomes of flexible versus rigid spinal braces in managing curve progression among adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus up to July 7, 2021. Eligible studies directly compared the effectiveness of both brace types in AIS patients. Two independent reviewers performed screening, quality assessment using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and Cochrane risk of bias tool, and data extraction. From 39 full-text articles, 2 randomized controlled trials and 4 cohort studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analyses were performed using the Mantel-Haenszel method with a random-effects model. Pooled results showed a significant difference in treatment success at skeletal maturity between flexible and rigid braces [RR 0.72; 95% CI (0.58–0.88); P=0.001]. Subgroup analyses confirmed the robustness of these findings (P=0.001; I²=0%). Conversely, no significant differences were found in curve progression beyond 45° or curve stability two years after skeletal maturity. Overall, rigid braces made from thermoplastic materials demonstrated superior effectiveness in preventing curve progression until skeletal maturity in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. These results reaffirm the clinical importance of rigid bracing as the current standard of care in AIS management.
