Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the verbal language play production of two Indonesian children studying at Rainbow Junior International School in Bali. The study aimed to explain how language play functioned as input for the children's English language learning within the natural language environment of the school. Two second-grade students, Didi and Rosie, were observed for 22 days during their interactions with peers and teachers. The findings revealed that the subjects produced a significant amount of language play. The study suggests that providing children with support and exposure to language play can encourage metalinguistic awareness and language growth. Keywords: language play, language acquisition, case study, children

Abstract

By examining the percentage of kinship and the time that has passed since the three languages separated, this study seeks to investigate the relationship between Javanese, Sundanese, and Betawi Malay. The speaking and listening approach (interview), along with note-taking and recording strategies, is the method utilized to collect data. The grouping method combined with lexicostatistics and glotochronology techniques is used in data analysis. Both formal and informal methods are used to present the data analysis results. The study's findings demonstrate that the three languages are related to one another and share a protolanguage. Sundanese and Betawi Malay are related to Javanese by 94%, Javanese and Betawi Malay by 58%, and Javanese and Sundanese by 36%. In light of the study's findings, it was determined that: Sundanese and Betawi Malay have language status, whereas Javanese and Sundanese belong to the same language family, according to research findings on the linguistic relationships between Sundanese, Javanese, and Betawi Malay. As a result, it can be assumed that although Javanese and Sundanese belong to different groups, Betawi Malay and Sundanese belong to the same group. Keyword: Relationship, Javanese, Sundanese, Betawi Malay

In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic that has hit almost the entire world, including Indonesia, conditions are abnormal but different from the habit of corruption which is still carried out by officials who no longer have morals as trustworthy leaders of the people. Through the “Narasi” Najwa Shihab’s IGTV, the event was packaged attractively so that it was presented briefly while it still referred to the hearts and aspiration of the people. This study used a qualitative research method with a semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes' model with denotation, connotation, and myth meanings. The object analyzed was the “Narasi IGTV” on Najwa Shihab’s Instagram. Based on the results of research by using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, it indicated that Najwa Shihab used many choices of words that indicated the crime term which had its own meaning in the video. In addition, through the “Narasi IGTV”, it affirmed the people's anger at officials who commited corruption. Keywords: Najwa Shihab, Semiotics, Online media

Homeless to Harvard (2003) is an actual event story and a motivational movie of Liz Murray, a woman whose parents are drug addicts. This research was focused on finding the maxims flouted and the reason for flouting the maxims. The study used a qualitative method. To analyse the collected data, descriptive research and pragmatic identity were used. Results showed 12 times maxims were flouted in total. The flouted maxims were quantity (five times or 41%), quality (two or 17%), relation (two or 17%), and manner (three or 25%). Results also revealed the motivation for flouting the maxims and motives for flouting them were collaborative, conflict, and competitive. The learning activities undertaken by students are essential to be known as the basis for teachers to determine suitable teaching methods and media according to the characteristics of the students. The implication of this research is that teachers can create effective learning experiences by aligning teaching methods and media with the visual learning preferences of students. The research subjects were eighth-grade students at SMP Darussalam Bergas who have a visual learning style. The data for the research included all activities of students with a visual learning style. Data analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman's data analysis model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The data analysis results revealed that the characteristics of visual learning style predominantly dominated the students' learning preferences. The activities of visual learners include the following: they find it easier to comprehend what they see rather than what they hear, pay attention to PowerPoint presentations, are more organized and neat, prefer reading to being read to, are meticulous and detail-oriented, have good spelling skills, tend to doodle without specific meaning, are not easily distracted by noise but may be disrupted if the visual display is unclear, visual learners tend to copy everything written by the teacher on the chalkboard, and they prefer to sit near the front of the classroom to have a clear view. Keywords: learning activities, Javanese script, visual learning style
