Abstract

This article is a general description about the use of Survey Question Read Recite and Review (SQ4R) to teach reading comprehension for students. Thus, it is hoped that teachers can have more choice in teaching reading comprehension to the students particularly in teaching and learning English.

Abstract

This article elaborate the teaching of writing procedure text by using team pair solo technique. The steps or procedures of using this technique are described thoroughly. This technique can be one option for the teachers to assist them in teaching learning writing of English.

Abstract

Curriculum is a tool that is very important for the success of an education. The main purpose of curriculum is to prepare students to become intelligent, creative, innovative, faithful, and also affective when they are in the future society. As we know that in Indonesia there are always changes curriculum. This curriculum change definitely has an impact on the role of the teacher. This article will discuss about the impact of curriculum on the role teacher in school. Teachers are expected to implement the curriculum properly and correctly in the education system. This study aims to determine and describe the impact of curriculum changes on the role of teachers in school. The data was collected by library research.

Abstract

The emergence of the coronavirus in various parts of the world raises new challenges in the world of education that demand changes in the learning system. In the process of restoring education in Indonesia, the government is making efforts in the form of launching a new program, namely the Independent Curriculum. Curriculum changes in Indonesia certainly have an impact on the world of education, especially on student achievement. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. The data collection technique used is a collection of concepts. The results of this study indicate that curriculum changes have a significant effect on student achievement.

Abstract

This study analyzes the Theme and Rheme of Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech and evaluates its effectiveness. The speech delivered during his annual address to the Federal Assembly in Moscow, the speech often attracted public interest and curiosity about its meaning. It had a significant impact on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube, becoming viral. This significant attention was why Putin's speech was chosen for this research. The research employed a qualitative approach. The data were viral speech delivered by Putin in Moscow in 2024. Data were collected through observation and analyzed by comparing, describing, classifying, and presenting it using tables and descriptions. The findings showed 1 Unmarked Simple Theme (UST) (11.1%), 3 Unmarked Multiple Themes (UMT) (44.4%), no Marked Simple Theme (MST), and 3 Marked Multiple Themes (MMT) (44.4%) in the speech. The dominance of UMT and MMT was due to the "marking" function, emphasizing statehood and nationalism. The speech discussed global conflict-causing behaviors, emphasizing that Russia will not be influenced by other countries, especially Ukraine. In conclusion, the speech effectively conveyed its message through a primarily declarative and expressive mode in terms of Theme and Rheme.

Abstract

This research examines the speech functions present in the lyrics of Maher Zain's song "Free Palestine," which was recently released in June 2024. The song was selected because its lyrics serve not only as entertainment but also as a means to convey important messages, raise awareness, and foster empathy for current humanitarian issues. The primary objective of this study is to investigate how speech functions are realized in the lyrics of "Free Palestine" through discourse analysis. The research employs a qualitative approach. The data were analyzed focusing on speech functions. The data analysis process involved several steps, namely: initially identifying the lyrics, segmenting the lyrics into clauses, analyzing the clauses in terms of its function, determining the Mood types based on their grammatical structures (Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative, and Exclamative), and identifying speech functions, and drawing conclusions. The results revealed there were three types of Mood: Declarative, Interrogative, and Imperative. Declarative statement was predominant in the song, comprising 73.68% of the total analyzed clauses.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate if applying Canva significantly affects students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. This research was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this study was the tenth grade of SMK Swasta PAB 1 Helvetia which has two parallel classes namely X-Titl 1 and X-Titl 2. Each class consisted of 15 students. So, the total number of population was 30 students. Cluster random sampling with Spin the Wheel Technique was employed in selecting the sample. The class X-Titl 2 was selected as experimental group and the class X-Titl 1 was selected as control group. The experimental group was taught by applying Canva while the control group was taught without applying Canva. The instrument used in this research was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test. After the data were calculated, it was found that tobserved was higher than ttable (3.80 >2.00) with the degree of freedom df =58 at the level of significance α =0.05. It meant that Ha was accepted and Ho was successfully rejected. Thus, applying Canva significantly affects students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate whether the motivational dialogue from the movie "Barbie" is successful in terms of experiential function using a discourse analysis approach. The experiential function focuses on Process, Participant, and Circumstance. The movie ‘Barbie’ is chosen because its dialogue motivates and conveys moral lessons to the viewers. This study employs a qualitative research design. Data were collected through observation and documentation. The data were analyzed by employing several steps: separating the dialogue into clauses, analyzing the clauses in terms of experiential function, classifying the elements of experiential function, deriving patterns of experience, and evaluating the success of the dialogue. The analysis revealed there were 32 Processes, with the Verbal Process being the most dominant (40.62%), 37 Participants were identified, with Sayer being the most frequent at (37,14%), and 23 Circumstances, with Extent Circumstance being the most prevalent at (43.47%). Thus, the dialogue effectively motivates and creates an emotional bond with the viewers, fulfilling its intended experiential function. Through detailed analysis, it was revealed that the dialogue's use of Verbal Processes, Participant roles, and Circumstances contributes significantly to its motivational impact and emotional connection with the viewers.

Abstract

The focus of the research is the use of YouTube as a learning media in English classes for mechanical engineering students. The purpose of using YouTube videos is to improve students' speaking skills and create a comfortable classroom environment, and increase students' enthusiasm for learning in class. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Students speak with more confidence and are more expressive as a result of the highly effective use of YouTube media in the classroom. In addition, students do not need to worry about the phrases they use when speaking English because they have already witnessed how foreigners speak fluently and correctly.

Abstract

Code mixing and code switching prove effective in navigating communication complexities arising from participant’ diverse linguistic proficiency levels. This article assesss the role of code mixing and code switching in the dialogue featuring Cinta Laura Kiehl on Boy William’s Youtube Channel, dated 6th September 2021, the titled is “#Nebeng Boy eps 42”. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study gathers written data from Cinta Laura’s interview on Boy William Youtube Channel and analyzes it using explanatory samples. Cinta Laura, a proficient bilingual communicator, demonstrates the absence of language dominance. Specifically, the dominant function of code mixing relates to linguistic challenges, while code switching primarily involves the ability to articulate in a specific language. These findings aim to contribute to students’ English lecturers, and sociolinguistic researchers, encouraging a deeper exploration of the purpose behind code mixing and code switching in conversations.
