Abstract

Degenerative diseases become dangerous killer diseases if not treated properly. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a non-communicable disease which can be a complication that causes other dangerous diseases. The incidence of DM is still worrying as a contributor to killer diseases and in North Sumatra the incidence continues to increase every year. Based on the existing number of DM sufferers, 25% of sufferers know that they are DM sufferers, the rest do not know yet and this remaining number has a big risk of causing bodily health problems and a risk of complications from other, more dangerous diseases. Consuming foods high in simple carbohydrates, high in sugar, subjected to a lot of processing and low in complex nutrients and fiber can cause disturbances in the function of the insulin hormone, leading to the emergence of DM. In an effort to treat and increase public knowledge regarding DM disease and control the condition of DM sufferers, this is through the implementation of the 3J diet (right schedule, right amount and right type). This educational service activity was carried out in Bandar Kupa, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang district on 5-7 June 2023. This community service activity was carried out through several stages. At the initial stage, observations were carried out, then continued with the planning stage, education, delivery of educational material and the evaluation stage of acceptance of the material that had been delivered during the service education process. The results obtained showed that in terms of participant attendance, there was community enthusiasm in participating in the education provided. The results of the educational evaluation, increasing the knowledge of the community of education participants, decreased with the level of knowledge from less than 48% to 12%, there was an increase in sufficient knowledge before education by 32%, increasing to 68% and the level of good knowledge did not increase, namely at a percentage of 20%.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a type of disease that is generally known in society as diabetes. This disease can occur due to an increase in blood sugar levels so that insulin secretion experiences a progressive decrease. Complications of musculoskeletal disorders are one type of DM complication that causes weakness in the leg muscles. Foot exercises are one of the therapies that diabetes mellitus patients can do to overcome foot muscle problems. This foot exercise aims to increase blood circulation so that it can strengthen the leg muscles. If blood circulation is good, nutrition will flow more smoothly to body tissues so that muscle movement is not disturbed. Service activities are carried out through socialization and demonstrations using lectures, discussions and questions and answers. The number of PkM participants who were DM patients was 20 people who were determined using the total sampling method. PkM activities use a pre-test and post-test system with written questions to measure the benefits and increase in knowledge obtained by PkM participants. The results of the service showed that PkM activities through providing foot exercises to DM patients were beneficial in increasing the leg muscle strength of DM patients, where there was an average increase of 1.15 and a p value of 0.000. Apart from that, the level of knowledge of PkM participants regarding foot exercise material for DM patients also experienced an increase in knowledge by 90% or as many as (18 PkM participants) understood the PkM material well.

Abstract

Adolescence is a period when a person experiences a transition from child to adult which is usually marked by physical and mental changes. One of the changes that occurs in young women is experiencing menstruation. Menstruation usually causes pain (dysmenorrhea) which can interfere with daily activities. Dysmenorrhea exercise is one solution that can reduce menstrual pain. This exercise is a relaxation technique that can produce endophrin hormones which act as a natural sedative. Endofrins create a feeling of comfort in the nerves so they can suppress pain. The PkM activity was held in the Lubuk Pakam sub-district, where the PkM participants were young women who were determined randomly, namely 15 people. Implementation of PkM is carried out using several methods, namely delivery of material, demonstrations, discussions and questions and answers. Before implementing PkM, participants were given a pre-test to measure their initial level of knowledge. Then, during the activity evaluation, a post-test will be given so that the success of this PkM activity can be assessed. The PkM results show that menstrual pain in young women can generally interfere with activities. Dysmenorrhea exercises have been proven to reduce menstrual pain. The results of the PkM implementation showed that there was an increase in the knowledge and abilities of PkM participants regarding dysmenorrhea exercises in dealing with menstrual pain with a percentage of 100%. The average pre-test knowledge score for PkM participants was 50. However, after implementation, the average post-test knowledge score was 90. The ability of PkM participants also increased because they were able to do exercises independently.

Abstract

Adolescence is a period when a person experiences a transition from child to adult which The incidence of delayed child development in Indonesia is 10%. This delay in growth and development is related to the baby's brain development, such as genetic factors, health and nutritional status, the quality of interaction between mother and child, and environmental conditions. Baby's motor development is a phase of baby's development according to age. The child's limited time in motor learning and excessive parental attention as well as low child motivation and stimulation are the triggers for delays. Tummy time is a type of stimulant that influences the motor development of newborn babies. Tummy time is useful in improving the baby's development in positions such as lying on his stomach or back, rolling over, crawling, and preventing brachycephaly. PkM activities were carried out at the Pagar Jati Community Health Center where the PkM participants were mothers with toddlers who were determined using a total sampling method of 15 people. Implementation of PkM is carried out through socialization, demonstrations, discussions and questions and answers. To measure the initial knowledge and increase in knowledge of PkM participants before and after implementing PkM, pre and post-tests will be given. The PkM results show that Tummy time can influence the gross motor development of normal babies with a correlation value of 0.932 and a significance of 0.000. The average pre-test score for PkM participants was 5.6 and post-test was 7.7. If the differences are calculated, an average score increase of 2.1 is obtained, which means that this PkM activity succeeded in increasing the knowledge and abilities of PkM participants regarding tummy time and gross motor development.

Abstract

Food products currently compete with each other based on price and physical appearance. Many traders are competing to make food with attractive colors by adding synthetic dyes. However, in order to make big profits, there are some who make food products but are not honest. Such as adding rhodamine-B, which is a textile dye, as a coloring agent in foods such as chili sauce. People often use chili sauce to add a spicy taste to food. If there is rhodamine-B in food, it can cause health problems such as stomach inflammation, skin irritation, respiratory tract and liver cancer and can cause death if it accumulates in large quantities. This community service activity through outreach will increase public knowledge about the dangers of rhodamine-B. Where PkM material will be presented through lecture, discussion and question and answer methods. The number of PkM participants is 20 traders who sell around the Tanjung Morawa traditional market, where PkM participants are determined randomly. The increase in participants' knowledge was measured through pre and post-tests. The service results show that there are several chili sauce products that contain certain levels of rhodamine-B so it is not recommended to use this chili sauce. Apart from that, through this outreach activity, PkM participants experienced an increase in average knowledge about the dangers of rhodamine-B by 26.5. Where the average pre-test score is 52 and post-test is 78.5, which means there is an increase in knowledge after the counseling activities.

Abstract

The increase in processed food consumption has led to an increase in the use of food additives. However, public understanding of food additives and their health impacts remains minimal, especially among high school students. Private High School Harapan 3 is one such private school located in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, bordering the city of Medan, which has garnered attention due to the high number of students consuming food or snacks containing additives without knowing the negative effects of excessive consumption. This forms the basis for the need to conduct awareness activities at the school. Therefore, this community service activity aims to provide a better understanding to students as participants about food additives and their negative health effects. The implementation method of this activity consists of several stages. Firstly, the preparation of interesting and easily understandable counseling materials, covering the introduction of additives, their types, and their health impacts. Secondly, direct counseling conducted by lecturers from various disciplines interactively by providing relevant case examples. Thirdly, group discussions to deepen understanding and resolve participants' doubts. Fourthly, a question and answer session. The results of this activity show an improvement in participants' understanding, evident from their enthusiasm in asking questions because they realize the importance of choosing healthy foods and avoiding those with excessive additives. Group discussions help them understand information more deeply, while the question and answer session provides an opportunity to clarify doubts. Through this activity, we have successfully increased participants' understanding of food additives and their health impacts. Thus, participants are expected to apply this knowledge in their daily lives as smart and responsible consumers when choosing food.

Abstract

The number of elderly people worldwide is estimated to increase by 56% between 2015 and 2030. In Indonesia, the number of elderly people is estimated to increase by 23.66 million people, and is expected to continue to increase until 2035. Impaired cognitive function is one of the most common symptoms in the elderly. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2017 there were 47 million people worldwide who experienced impaired cognitive function. Therefore, appropriate treatment is needed to improve the cognitive function of the elderly. Due to impaired cognitive function, a person becomes dependent on other people to care for themselves. To overcome this cognitive function disorder, it is necessary to carry out community service activities (PKM) in the form of outreach to the community about the importance of Pilates training for the elderly with the aim of overcoming cognitive function disorders in the elderly. Pilates exercise combines strength, flexibility and balance. Pilates exercise is a sport that focuses on lumbo-pelvic stabilization and activation of other body muscles. The methods applied in this activity are lectures, discussions and demonstrations of Pilates exercises and evaluation. Based on the results of the evaluation carried out, this socialization activity shows positive and satisfying benefits for the elderly where the elderly's understanding of Pilates exercises has improved. Previously they felt the exercises were very heavy and difficult to implement, but after doing them it turned out that these exercises were very interesting and easy to do. In fact, most of the elderly show a very high desire to continue to learn more and practice these exercises. Overall, this socialization activity received a positive response from the elderly, so it is hoped that it can encourage and motivate the elderly to independently carry out this exercise, considering that Pilates training is very useful in improving cognitive function. By increasing the understanding and interest of the elderly in this exercise, the elderly can develop this exercise on an ongoing basis, both individually and in groups, in order to maintain, develop and improve the cognitive function of the elderly so as to achieve the quality of society in general.

Abstract

Baby growth and development is an indicator of baby health. Data from WHO shows that a number of toddlers experience motor disorders, which can include fine motor skills and gross motor skills. Infancy is considered a critical and environmentally sensitive period, so optimizing care during this period has a significant impact on the child's well-being. Baby massage is recognized as a useful therapy for encouraging children's growth and development. However, mothers' low knowledge of independent baby massage techniques can affect their skills in carrying out baby massage. Therefore, an educational approach through counseling is considered an effective strategy for increasing mothers' understanding and skills. Community service activities (PKM) carried out at the Sahabat Bunda Midwife Clinic involve material presentations, question and answer discussions, and demonstrations as learning methods. The results of the PKM show that the material presented can be well understood and responded to by mothers. Positive feedback received indicates achievement of extension targets. Significantly, mothers' knowledge and skills regarding baby massage increased, as seen from their ability to answer questions and carry out baby massage demonstrations. It is hoped that through this PKM activity, mothers can be independent in carrying out baby massage, so that they can make a positive contribution to the optimal growth and development of their babies.

Abstract

Optimal nutrition during early childhood is crucial in supporting the overall growth and development of children. This period is known as the golden age, during which brain and physical development occur very rapidly. Therefore, nutrition education for mothers of young children is a vital step in ensuring that future generations grow up to be healthy and intelligent individuals. Knowledge about the nutritional needs of young children, the proper way to provide complementary feeding (MP-ASI), and the prevention of malnutrition are the main focuses of this education. This article also presents various essential nutrients needed by young children and practical tips for mothers in providing MP-ASI. The Community Service Program (PKM) was held at the Nurtiana Ginting Clinic, Serdang Bedagai Regency, on May 4, 2024, involving 18 participants. The primary goal of this PKM is that with good nutrition education, it is hoped that mothers will become more skilled in providing healthy and balanced meals, thus supporting the creation of a healthy and intelligent golden generation. Adequate knowledge will help mothers make the right decisions regarding diet and food choices, ultimately supporting the creation of a healthy, intelligent, and highly competitive golden generation. Nutrition education also plays an important role in preventing various health problems that can arise from nutritional deficiencies or excesses, thereby significantly improving children's quality of life.
