Abstract

Etlingera alba is a plant in Southeast Sulawesi that has antioxidant activity. Natural ingredients such as herbal medicine require a delivery system that facilitates them to reach the site of drug action, especially for transdermal delivery. The elastic vesicle system is a transdermal delivery system that can increase the penetration of active substances at the skin through the act of phospholipids on the skin's lipid bilayer and the deformability of the vesicles. This study aims to formulate and evaluate Etlingera alba rhizome ethanolic extract's elastic vesicle gel to obtain the optimal concentration of Tween 60 as a vesicle former and carbopol as a gel base. Preparation of elastic vesicles of Etlingera alba ethanolic extract using the heat method through variations Tween 60's concentration, namely 5%(F1); 10%(F2); 15%(F3); and 20%(F4). Meanwhile, elastic vesicle gel formulation of the ethanol extract of Etlingera alba rhizome used various concentrations of 0.5% carbopol gel base (FGel 1); 1% (FGel 2); 1.5% (FGel 3); and 2% (FGel 4). The results obtained were the optimum concentration of Tween 60 as a constituent of elastic vesicles of 15% (F4) with spherical morphology using an optical microscope, vesicle size of 10.45 nm, and polydispersity index of 0.280 using a Particle Size Analyzer. In addition, the optimal concentration of carbopol as a base for elastic vesicle gel is a concentration of 0.5% (GGel 1) with white color, distinctive aroma, and thick texture, and has a pH of 6, a viscosity of 2,366 cPs, spread of 6.8 cm, and physically stable through cycling test.

Abstract

One of the generative diseases today increasing in numbers worldwide is diabetes mellitus (DM). In many cases, diabetic patients have higher levels even after taking regular medication. This research analyzes the correlation between stress and blood glucose levels in DM in Mulyorejo public health center Surabaya. The type of this research used a cross-sectional analysis, with the population taken from DM patients. There are 40 persons with samples of 36 respondents, a sampling technique that used simple random sampling. This instrument used a questionnaire and observation sheet, data analysis using Rank Spearmen Test with significant level α =0,05. The result of the Rank Spearmen Test gained p < α that is 0,000 < 0,05 mean there is a correlation between stress level with blood glucose level in diabetes mellitus in Mulyorejo public health center Surabaya. This research concludes that stress also influences the blood glucose level of DM. In this case, the study suggests that the DM patient can control a healthy lifestyle and avoid stress, anticipating DM symptoms and increasing blood glucose levels early. Health personnel hopes to improve motivation and inform DM patients well.

Abstract

Wualae (Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M. Smith) has a high flavonoid content, so it has the potential as an antioxidant and can be used in drug delivery systems, namely nanoemulsions. Nanoemulsions can improve absorption, help dissolve lipophilic drugs and increase bioavailability. This study aims to determine the formulation and characterization of wualae nanoemulsion. The research method used is a low-energy emulsification method. The nanoemulsion is formulated into four formulas with a concentration ratio of tween 80 and PEG 400, namely 50%: 30% (F1), 50%: 10% (F2), 10%: 30% (F3), and 10%: 10% (F4). The characterizations included organoleptic tests, nanoemulsion type tests, viscosity tests, transmittance tests, particle size tests, polydispersity index tests, potential zeta and physical tests, and centrifugation and cycling tests. The results obtained sequentially are F1 has a characteristic odour of clear yellow, type of oil-in-water nanoemulsion, 150 cPa.s, 99%, 14.56 ± 0.666 nm, 0.061 ± 0.017, 1.453 ± 1.23 mV and is stable in the test. F2 has a characteristic odour of clear yellow colour, oil-in-water nanoemulsion type, 900 cPa.s, 97.2%, 13.8 ± 0.781 nm, 0.126 ± 0.066, -5.503 ± 0.57 mV and is stable in difficult tests. F3 has a dirty white type of nanoemulsion oil in 9.5 cPa and is unstable in typical tests. F4 has a characteristic odour of cloudy white colour, oil-in-water nanoemulsion type, 6 cPa.s and is inconsistent in stability testing. Based on the data above, the best wualae fruit extract nanoemulsion formulation is formula 1.

Abstract

Type II diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by increased blood glucose levels due to damage to pancreatic β cells which causes reduced insulin production or abnormal insulin action. The leaves of Abelmoschus manihot L.Medik as an antidiabetic have been used empirically by the community. This study aims to determine the activity of the ethanol extract of Abelmoschus manihot L.Medik leaves as an antihyperglycemic agent in male rats fed a high-fat diet and experiencing type 2 DM induced by streptozotocin. The test animals were divided into six groups: the normal control group (KN) without treatment; the negative control group (K-), which was treated with 0.5% NaCMC, the positive control group (K+), which was treated with metformin 9 mg and the test group of extracts. With doses varying from 75 mg/kg, 150 mg/kg, and 300 mg/kg, rats were first given a high-fat diet, then induced by streptozotocin at a 30 mg/kg dose extract was given for seven days. The results of the phytochemical screening showed that the ethanol extract of red gedi leaves contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and steroids. The measurement results showed that administering ethanol extract of red gedi leaves (Abelmoschus manihot L.Medik) doses of 75 mg/kg, 150 mg/kg, and 300 mg/kg affected reducing blood glucose levels in male rats of the Wistar strain type II diabetes mellitus model. Significant based on the One-way ANOVA test and the Least Significance Difference (LSD) post hoc test.

Abstract

Bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) fruit has been empirically used as an antibacterial and reported to have activity against acne-causing bacteria. This study aimed to formulate bitter melon ethanol extract in a spray gel preparation and test its activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis as one of the acne-causing bacteria. Pare fruit extract concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 2.5% are formulated into spray gel preparations with additional ingredients, Carbopol 940 0.1%, triethanolamine 0.5%, propylene glycol 15%, DMDM Hydantoin 0.6% and aquadest. The characterization of the physical properties of the spray gel preparation included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, and dry time test. The results showed that the spray gel preparation of ethanol extract of Pare fruit had a liquid texture, brownish-yellow colour, and distinctive odour and was homogeneous. The spray gel preparation also meets pH, viscosity and dry time requirements. The antibacterial activity of spray gel preparations resulted in a diameter response of potent and robust inhibition.

Abstract

Acne is a skin disease that is common in teenagers. In Indonesia, acne occurs around 85-100% of cases. According to the records of the Indonesian cosmetic dermatology study group, it was shown that 60% of acne sufferers in 2006, 80% in 2007 and 90% in 2009. A face with acne is an image that is not ideal for a teenager and creates dissatisfaction, causing a feeling of lack of self-confidence. One way that can be used to overcome the problem of acne is by giving a celery mask (Apium graveolens L.). Masks are cosmetic preparations for facial skin care which have the benefit of curing acne and acne scars. Celery (Apium graveolens L.) has been shown in several studies to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity to prevent acne. This study aims to prove the effect of using a celery mask to reduce the number of acne lesions. The method chosen in this study was the Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design, by comparing the difference in reducing the number of acne lesions from the celery mask treatment with the paired T-test formula. The results obtained from giving celery masks to 10 young women aged 16-18 years with the classification of mild, moderate and severe acne for 2 weeks showed a significant decrease in the number of acne lesions (p = 0.00). So it can be concluded that giving celery masks can reduce the number of acne lesions in young women aged 16-18 years.

Abstract

Skincare is currently important because of the many problems that occur in the skin. Some of the problems that occur have caused a reaction from the community by using several skin care products that are believed to be able to overcome these problems. One of them is Niacinamide. This review aims to summarize the relevant literature on the role and potential of Niacinamide in various skin problems and to compare the results of studies from several articles. We summarize 21 articles obtained from PubMed and NCBI using several keywords. The review results show that Niacinamide is a substance that has particular benefits in the field of skin care product development. Based on literature studies from various studies show that Niacinamide has good potential in overcoming various problems that occur in the skin.

Abstract

The emergence of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) has become a major issue in tuberculosis (TB) treatment, and needs to find and develop new efficient drugs for better TB control. This research aims to discover a potential MTB salicylate synthase inhibitor, which regulates mycobactin biosynthesis, to bind iron ions which facilitate bacteria to replicate by utilizing the molecular docking method. A total of 462 compounds were chosen from the Marine Natural Products database. The test compounds were filtered sequentially based on their molecular weight and binding affinity energy. After re-categorizing the parameters, such as predicted binding energies and molecular interactions, including hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interactions, compounds CMNPD18535 (xylogranatin H), CMNPD20622 (agallochoal O), CMNPD25719 (isoscutellarein 7-O-β-xyloside-2′′-O-sulfate), and CMNPD31560 (28-nor-olean-2a,3ß-dihydroxy-14,17-diene-16-one) were identified as hit compounds. These four compounds demonstrated the greatest ability to inhibit the salicylate synthase enzyme with binding energies of -10.33, -10.1, -10.03, and -9.76 kcal/mol, respectively, compared to RVE (native ligand), which exhibited binding energy of -8.15 kcal/mol. Overall, the hit compounds showed a relatively good safety profile and Lipinski criteria except for CMNPD20622 because it inhibits the enzymes CYP2C9 and CYP3A4, and CMNPD25719, which has excess donors and acceptors hydrogen, thus violating 2 Lipinski criteria as an oral drug. This research could be the first step toward identifying appropriate candidate compounds for further experimental investigation as an alternative to the MTB salicylate synthase inhibitors.

Abstract

Daun Ageratum conyzoides Linn. memiliki efek sebagai antidiabetes melitus, namun data terkait efeknya terhadap kondisi kelainan agregasi platelet karena komplikasi DM belum pernah dilaporkan. Oleh sebab itu, pada penelitian ini dilakukan pengujian antidiabetes dan antiagregasi platelet ekstrak etanol daun Ageratum conyzoides Linn. Pemodelan hewan menggunakan induksi oral glukosa 20 g/kgBB 3 kali sehari, dan diberi pakan khusus lemak dan karbohidrat. Hewan dengan KGD > 135 mg/dL dibagi menjadi 6 kelompok, kontrol normal (KN), kontrol diabetes (K(-)), diabetes+glibenklamid (K(+)), hewan yang diberi ekstrak etanol daun Ageratum conyzoides Linn dosis 100 mg/kgBB (BD1), 200 mg/kgBB (BD2) dan 400 mg/kgBB) (BD3). Treatment dilakukan selama 14 hari. Agregasi platelet diukur berdasarkan waktu perdarahan dan waktu koagulasi. Ekstrak daun Ageratum conyzoides Linn. memiliki potensi sebagai antidiabetes (p<0,05) dengan dosis efektif yaitu 200 mg/kgBB dan menujukkan efektivitas yang sama dengan glibenklamid dalam menurunkan kadar glukosa darah (p>0,05). Namun, ekstrak etanol daun Ageratum conyzoides Linn. tidak menunjukkan adanya efek antiagregasi platelet pada tikus diabetes yang ditandai dengan penurunan waktu perdarahan dan waktu koagulasi (p>0,05). Berdasarkan hal tersebut, ekstrak daun Ageratum conyzoides Linn. dapat dikembangkan menjadi obat diabetes melitus, namun diduga tidak dapat digunakan untuk pencegahan komplikasi terkait agregasi platelet berdasarkan waktu perdarahan dan waktu koagulasi.

Abstract

Penyakit Human Immunodeviciency Virus (HIV) masih merupakan masalah kesehatan di Indonesia dengan tingkat prevalensi yang masih tinggi, termasuk di Sulawesi Tenggara, sehingga diperlukan penanganan tepat untuk mencegah penularan dan berbagai gangguan komplikasi pada penderita. Penggunaan obat antiretroviral (ARV) jangka panjang bahkan seumur hidup pada penderita HIV menimbulkan masalah kesehatan yaitu gangguan fungsi ginjal dengan peningkatan kadar ureum, dan sekaligus sebagai faktor pemicu infeksi neoplasma sekunder, gangguan neurologis serta fungsi fisiologis tubuh lainnya yang lebih serius, sehingga mengetahui profil kadar ureum untuk memantau fungsi ginjal selama terapi obat ARV penting dilakukan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui profil kadar ureum pada penderita HIV dengan lama terapi obat ARV di Kota Kendari. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif analitik dengan melakukan pemeriksaan kadar ureum darah penderita HIV menggunakan metode urease-GLD, dan data dianalisis statistik menggunakan uji regresi linear sederhana. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan 80% penderita HIV umur 20-30 tahun, jenis kelamin terbanyak 80% laki-laki, lama pengobatan 55% kurang dari 1 tahun, dengan hasil pemeriksaan kadar ureum 90% kategori normal dan 10% kategori tidak normal, dan hasil analisis statistik regresi linear sederhana menunjukkan tidak ada hubungan lama terapi obat ARV dengan kadar ureum pada penderita HIV di kota Kendari (p>0.05).  Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah peningkatan kadar ureum pada penderita HIV di Kota Kendari tidak dipengaruhi oleh lama terapi antiretroviral.
