Jurnal Pengabdian Masyarakat dan Riset Pendidikan is a journal on Faculty of Education. Abstract

The strengthening of character education through local cultural values has become an essential requirement in shaping competent and morally grounded students. This community service initiative aims to promote the implementation of the Huyula values which encompass mutual cooperation , responsibility, and social awareness in the character development of students at SMK Negeri 1 Limboto in a participatory and sustainable manner. The methodology employed a participatory approach with stages including initial observation, needs analysis, program formulation, coordination with the school, implementation of interactive socialization, as well as evaluation and reflection. Socialization was conducted through presentations, discussions, situational simulations, educational games, and collective reflection, with active student participation in analyzing real-life daily experiences. Data collection instruments consisted of observation questionnaires using a Likert scale, distributed to 125 students, followed by evaluation of 40 students in a representative sample. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in the implementation of Huyula values, evidenced by students’ awareness of linking academic achievement with character, their ability to interact across diverse backgrounds, understanding gained through daily experiences, and active participation in collective activities. The systematic and sustainable strengthening methods proved effective in fostering students’ intrinsic motivation to practice Huyula values in school life. This initiative underscores that character education based on local culture not only reinforces theoretical understanding but also cultivates tangible behaviors reflecting togetherness, responsibility, and social care, making it a relevant model for application in other vocational schools.

Abstract

The purpose of this community service activity is to improve the quality of administrative management, improve marketing management and services provided by LPD employees. The implementation method includes socialization regarding the importance of business management and marketing, technical training on the use of computer applications such as Microsoft Excel and Word, direct practice in financial recording and management of LPD customer data. The results of the activity showed an increase in employee skills as indicated by an increase in the ability to prepare financial reports using Microsoft Excel more quickly, neatly, and accurately, as well as the implementation of digital-based marketing strategies through social media Instagram which has been proven to expand the reach of services, especially in reaching the younger generation around Sembung Gede Village. Administrative efficiency has increased significantly because the use of computer applications can speed up work processes and strengthen transparency, thereby increasing public trust in LPD. Strengthening the capacity of LPD employees through computer training and marketing management assistance not only improves the internal performance of LPDs, but also has an impact on the sustainability of the socio-economic function of traditional institutions in building village economic independence.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the application of individual counseling using positive reinforcement techniques in overcoming aggressive behavior and the factors causing aggressive behavior in client "I". This qualitative study uses a case study method. Data collection techniques involve observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis used in this study is pattern matching, data explanation, and time series analysis. The results of the study show that individual counseling with positive reinforcement techniques in overcoming aggressive behavior in client "I" found that the client had difficulty in managing emotions and showed aggressive behavior, such as shouting, pushing, even hitting friends when feeling offended or not understood. Positive reinforcement techniques can strengthen positive behavior by providing reinforcement when the client shows a response or behavior that matches expectations. Intervention results showed that reinforcement techniques helped client "I" overcome aggressive behavior, improve communication, and build healthier social relationships with peers. This study recommends the use of reinforcement techniques as an effective approach to addressing aggressive behavior in individuals and providing benefits for counselors and related parties.

Abstract

Early reading skills are essential competencies that must be mastered by students from the beginning of elementary school as a foundation for academic success. However, observations at SD Negeri 38 Sungai Ambawang revealed that many first-grade students still face difficulties in reading. This study aims to analyze the early reading abilities of first-grade students based on the EGRA (Early Grade Reading Assessment) test. This research applied a descriptive qualitative approach using the EGRA test, which consists of five components: letter recognition, word reading, reading meaningless words, oral reading fluency and comprehension, and listening comprehension. The subjects were 11 first-grade students. The results showed that only 2 students were able to recognize all letters, while 3 could not recognize any letters. In word reading, 1 student read fluently, 7 read partially, and 3 could not read. In meaningless word reading, only 2 students performed well. For fluency and comprehension, 3 students answered all questions, 5 answered partially, and 3 did not answer. In listening, 2 answered all, 6 partially, and 3 did not respond. In conclusion, students’ early reading skills remain low, influenced by limited literacy stimulation, monotonous teaching, and lack of media. More varied strategies and stronger teacher–parent collaboration are needed to improve early literacy.

Abstract

The increasingly complex issue of environmental change requires students to possess critical thinking skills in order to understand and find solutions to the ecological problems occurring around them. Learning activities in schools still tend to focus on rote memorization, which limits students’ ability to think deeply and analytically about environmental phenomena. The Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model emerges as an innovative student-centered approach that presents real-world problems to be solved through critical and collaborative thinking processes. The purpose of this literature review is to analyze the influence of the PBL model on enhancing students’ critical thinking skills in understanding environmental change issues. Based on the review of previous studies, PBL has been proven effective in improving critical thinking ability, conceptual understanding, and awareness of environmental issues. Therefore, the implementation of PBL can serve as a relevant learning strategy to develop active, reflective students with a high level of ecological awareness.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the 5E Learning Cycle model in improving students' learning outcomes and scientific argumentation skills, including claims, evidence, and reasoning. The research method used was descriptive quantitative with 26 students of grade X-2 participating. Data were collected through pretests and posttests of learning outcomes and argumentation assessments during two learning cycles. The results showed that 73.1% of students experienced an increase in argument quality, 11.5% remained the same, and 15.4% experienced a decrease. The N-Gain value for cognitive learning outcomes was 0.56, which is included in the moderate category. Interviews showed that students with improved argumentation felt more engaged and challenged in learning, while students with decreased argument quality experienced difficulties in articulating reasoning and integrating evidence. These findings indicate that the 5E LC model is effective in improving students' learning outcomes and scientific argumentation skills, although additional support in the form of explicit argument scaffolding is needed to help all students develop these abilities optimally.

Abstract

Pengelolaan sampah yang efektif merupakan tantangan besar bagi banyak komunitas, termasuk Desa Taman. Program pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kesadaran dan partisipasi masyarakat dalam pengelolaan sampah melalui edukasi dan pendampingan berbasis komunitas. Kegiatan ini melibatkan sosialisasi mengenai pentingnya pengelolaan sampah yang baik, pelatihan pembuatan kompos dari sampah organik, serta pengenalan konsep bank sampah untuk sampah anorganik. Melalui pendekatan partisipatif, diharapkan masyarakat Desa Taman dapat lebih memahami dan menerapkan praktik pengelolaan sampah yang ramah lingkungan, sehingga tercipta lingkungan yang lebih bersih dan sehat. Diharapkan dari program ini berhasil menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam kesadaran dan keterlibatan masyarakat dalam pengelolaan sampah, serta pengurangan volume sampah yang dibuang ke tempat pembuangan akhir.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the extent to which the use of slang influences the use of Indonesian on social media among Generation Z students, particularly in the Office Administration Education Study Program at Medan State University. This study used a quantitative descriptive method with a purposive sampling technique on 50 students. The instrument was a Likert scale questionnaire to measure the intensity of slang use, the situations in which it is used, and respondents' perceptions of its influence on Indonesian use. The results showed that almost all respondents were familiar with slang terms (96%) and most used them intensively on social media (84%). Slang was predominantly used in interactions with campus friends (82%) and friends outside campus (86%), while use with family was relatively low (12%). A total of 72% of respondents stated that slang influenced their habits of using Indonesian, both in vocabulary and communication style. These findings demonstrate the dynamics of language among the younger generation, where slang functions as a social identity, but also poses challenges to the continued use of good and correct Indonesian.

Abstract

The rapid growth of digital technology has led to the emergence of various social media platforms, one of which is TikTok, a space for young generations to express themselves. One prominent phenomenon is the widespread use of slang in both videos and comment sections. This article aims to describe the forms of slang that appear on TikTok and explain their functions in user communication. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with data collected from screenshots of conversations and TikTok video content. The findings reveal that slang on TikTok appears in the form of acronyms, abbreviations, borrowed words from foreign languages, and contractions. Slang is primarily used as a medium of identity expression, social bonding, and adaptation to current trends. However, excessive use of slang may also cause misunderstandings among users who are not familiar with such expressions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of the Human Development Index (HDI) and unemployment rate on economic growth in North Sumatera and the broader Sumatera Island region during 2019–2024 using panel data. Regression analysis with EViews 12 was conducted, testing Common Effect, Fixed Effect, and Random Effect models. The best model was selected based on Chow, Hausman, and Lagrange Multiplier tests, followed by classical assumption checks. Results indicate that HDI does not significantly influence economic growth due to time lags, mismatch between graduate skills and market needs, low quality of education and health, and dominance of traditional sectors. Conversely, the unemployment rate has a significant negative effect, with a 1% increase in unemployment causing a 2.33% decrease in economic growth. Simultaneous tests confirm that HDI and unemployment together significantly affect growth, explaining 36% of its variation, while other factors like investment and inflation account for the remainder. The study recommends integrated development policies focusing on improving human resource quality and reducing unemployment to support more inclusive economic growth in Sumatera.
