Jurnal Pengabdian Masyarakat dan Riset Pendidikan is a journal on Faculty of Education. Jurnal JERKIN: Jurnal Pengabdian Masyarakat dan Riset Pendidikan is under the auspices of the Faculty of Education, Universitas Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. The journal is registered with E-ISSN: 2961-9890. Jurnal Pengabdian Masyarakat dan Riset Pendidikan is published four times a year in September, December, March and June. Jurnal Pengabdian Masyarakat dan Riset Pendidikan receives 50 articles per issue. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of leadership in enhancing organizational commitment through an in-depth review of the literature and previous research. The primary focus of this study is on how leadership styles, particularly transformational and democratic leadership, contribute to strengthening affective, normative, and ongoing commitment within organizations. The research method used a qualitative descriptive approach utilizing secondary data in the form of scientific books, journal articles, and other relevant sources. The results indicate that leadership has a significant influence on the formation of organizational commitment, particularly through emotional support, effective communication, inspiration, and employee involvement in the decision-making process. Adaptive, communicative leaders who are able to create a positive work culture have been shown to increase employee loyalty, sense of belonging, and intrinsic motivation. Conversely, authoritarian or less responsive leadership can weaken the engagement of organizational members. This study concludes that developing leadership capacity, strengthening interpersonal communication, and creating a conducive organizational culture are important factors in increasing sustainable organizational commitment.

Abstract

Competitive anxiety is a major psychological challenge for adolescent athletes that can hinder optimal performance on the court. This study aims to examine the effect of emotion regulation on competitive anxiety and the role of social support as a moderator variable in adolescent badminton athletes. This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The participants were 203 adolescent badminton athletes (aged 10-15 years) in Medan City selected using purposive sampling technique. Data collection instruments included the Sport Anxiety Scale (SAS adaptation), Indonesian Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for Sport (IERQ4S), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Data analysis was performed using Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). The results showed that emotion regulation had a significant negative effect on competitive anxiety (p < .001). Social support was proven to moderate the relationship significantly (p < .001), where the interaction between emotion regulation and social support was able to strengthen the reduction in competitive anxiety with the effective contribution of the model increasing from 53.7% to 75.8%. The conclusion of this study is that synergy between internal capabilities (emotion regulation) and external factors (social support) is highly effective in reducing competitive anxiety in adolescent athletes.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum was introduced as a response to the need for educational transformation in Indonesia, emphasizing flexible, relevant, and student-centered learning. This study aims to map the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesian schools, identify patterns of practice, and examine supporting factors and challenges in the learning process. A qualitative literature review with thematic analysis was employed, examining scientific journals, proceedings, research reports, and books published in the last five years. The findings indicate that curriculum implementation varies across schools, influenced by teacher competence, school management support, and the availability of facilities. Schools with highly competent teachers, adaptive leadership, and adequate resources effectively implement differentiated learning, project-based activities, and authentic assessments, fostering student creativity, motivation, and character development. Conversely, limited teacher understanding, inadequate management support, and insufficient facilities pose significant barriers. The study highlights the importance of integrating teacher capacity, school support, and facility readiness, along with intensive mentoring and practice-based training, to ensure effective and sustainable implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. These insights provide valuable guidance for educators, policymakers, and researchers to strengthen curriculum implementation and enhance the quality of education in Indonesia.

Abstract

Education plays an important role in shaping individuals and society, with cognitivism theory as one effective approach to improving the effectiveness of the learning process for elementary school students. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating cognitivism theory into the learning process in elementary schools, with a focus on improving students' conceptual understanding, thinking skills, and academic achievement. The research method used a classroom action cycle (PTK) approach with two cycles, including initial preparation (concept introduction, lesson planning, and development of learning activities in accordance with Piaget's stages of cognitive development), implementation of strategies such as problem-solving approaches, group discussions, use of visual media as aids, and evaluation through observation, initial and final tests, and reflection for improvement. Data were processed qualitatively and quantitatively to identify patterns, changes in understanding, and the effectiveness of the method. The results showed a significant increase in student engagement, in-depth understanding of the material, and learning motivation. The conclusion of this study confirms that consistent application of cognitivism theory can improve the academic achievement of elementary school students, encouraging educators to adopt this approach to develop critical thinking, memory, and metacognitive skills, so that students are better prepared to face future challenges. This study provides valuable insights for education practitioners to design more efficient and adaptive teaching strategies.

Abstract

The formation of self-identity in elementary school students is a crucial developmental process shaped by learning experiences and social interactions. One instructional model believed to support identity development is Project Based Learning (PjBL). This study aims to analyze the literature on the influence of PjBL on the development of elementary students’ self-identity, encompassing cognitive, affective, and social dimensions. The research employed a qualitative method with a literature review approach, drawing from international journals, nationally indexed journals (Sinta), and academic books published within the last 5–10 years. The findings indicate that PjBL enhances critical thinking, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving skills (cognitive); fosters responsibility, independence, and self-confidence (affective); and develops teamwork, leadership, and group identity (social). Challenges in implementing PjBL include time constraints, limited facilities, and teacher preparedness, which can be mitigated through adaptive strategies. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on self-identity development rather than solely academic outcomes. The main contribution of this review is providing a perspective that PjBL serves as a pedagogical strategy to strengthen both personal and social identity among elementary school students from an early age.

Abstract

Plastic pollution along the coastal areas of North Sumatra has become a serious issue that threatens the sustainability of the environment, economy, and social life of coastal communities. This study aims to understand the negative impacts caused by plastic waste on coastal ecosystems and investigate the underlying factors and resulting consequences. The research employs a qualitative approach through literature review, policy analysis, and data from relevant previous studies. The findings indicate that plastic waste has a direct impact on the degradation of mangrove ecosystems, coral reefs, and various marine species such as fish, sea turtles, and seabirds. The consequences further extend to the economic sector, reflected in declining fish catches and reduced tourist visits in coastal areas. Moreover, the inability of communities and industrial stakeholders to bear the environmental damage costs highlights a significant market failure. Although several government initiatives have been introduced, such as coastal cleanup campaigns and restrictions on single-use plastics in certain areas, their implementation remains fragmented, inconsistent, and lacks integration of external costs. This study emphasizes the need for regulatory and economic-based policies, including extended producer responsibility, stricter limitations on single-use plastics, improved waste management infrastructure, and collaboration among stakeholders to mitigate long-term environmental impacts and enhance the well-being of coastal communities.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how digitalization impacts the quality of public services and the delivery of public goods in Indonesia, while identifying the factors that facilitate and hinder them. The approach used is descriptive qualitative, using a case study within a government agency such as the Medan Population Service. Data collection involved analyzing the policy document Presidential Regulation No. 95 of 2018, impact matrix tables, and process flow diagrams, using the Miles and Huberman analytical framework, which includes data reduction, presentation, and formulation of conclusions. The results show that digitalization significantly improves efficiency: service time is reduced from several days to 30 minutes, operational costs decrease by 40 percent due to transparent e-procurement, data accuracy reaches 98 percent, and public satisfaction increases by 82 percent due to the convenience provided by the SPBE and INA Digital applications. Transparency is increased with a 60 percent reduction in problematic procurement cases through real-time audits; However, issues such as inadequate internet infrastructure (20-30 percent effectiveness in rural areas), low digital literacy among the elderly, and concerns about data security continue to hamper the accessibility of public goods such as telemedicine and targeted social assistance.

Abstract

Studying abroad has become a strategic option for improving the quality of human resources capable of competing amid the rapid advancement of global technology and knowledge. Taiwan, as a country experiencing significant progress in education, technology, and economic development, has become an attractive study destination for Indonesian students. However, the impacts of this phenomenon indicate a tendency toward cultural assimilation that may lead to shifts in national identity, particularly toward Westernized characteristics. This condition highlights the need to strengthen national identity values among Indonesian students studying overseas. This PKM (Community Service Program) activity aims to provide insights into national identity while reinforcing a sense of pride and nationalism in the midst of global cultural influences. The implementation methods include workshops and sharing sessions with Indonesian students regarding their experiences in dealing with cultural challenges in Taiwan. The activities were conducted in three phases: preparation, implementation, and evaluation followed by follow-up actions. The results show an increased understanding among participants regarding the importance of preserving their identity as Indonesians, as well as the emergence of a commitment to internalize national identity values.

Abstract

The Ottoman Empire played a highly crucial role, especially in the expansion of Islamic territories and the development of Islamic civilization in Europe. The peak of Ottoman advancement occurred under the leadership of Sultan Suleiman I. He was known as al-Qanuni, meaning “the lawgiver,” because he successfully formulated laws to regulate society. During the Islamic golden age, many Europeans came to learn and seek knowledge from Muslims, enabling them to emerge from the Dark Ages. The Islamic world had once reached great heights in science, technology, and philosophy, particularly under the Abbasid Dynasty, which lasted from the 8th to the 15th century. This study uses library research with a historical approach. The results show that the Ottoman Empire achieved significant glory in its era, successfully expanding Islamic territories across three continents and managing the longest-lasting government in Islamic history (approximately seven centuries) involving 39 ruling leaders. However, the Ottoman government placed strong emphasis on military strength; the kingdom’s position would weaken if its military institutions were not well maintained, while a strong military contributed to the empire’s progress. Nevertheless, the military still played an important role in supporting the greatness of the Ottomans.

Abstract

Waste is an environmental problem that can disrupt the environment in Bresela Village. The purpose of this community service is to find ways to process waste in Bresela Village. This socialization is expected to provide knowledge and motivate the people of Bresela Village to actively process waste. This socialization also aims to help Bresela Village reduce waste from wood dust into fertilizer, thereby creating an integrated system between farmers and craftsmen This outreach program invited farmers and artisans from Bresela Village. The community service program was divided into two days. The first day was dedicated to outreach. Expert speakers were invited to present material on processing waste into organic fertilizer. The second day continued with practical sessions on processing waste from sawdust into organic fertilizer. This outreach program helped Bresela Village by providing solutions to the problems they faced. This outreach program helped farmers and artisans in Bresela Village establish an integrated system.
