Abstract

This study aims to determine women's language features used by the main character in the Joy movie based on Lakoff's theory. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. More specifically, the researcher used the theory of Miles, Huberman Saldana (2014) which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification to analyze the data and describe the findings. Data sources were collected from the utterances of the main character from the movie. The findings show that there are nine out of ten women's language features used by the main character in the movie. They were lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation on declarative, empty adjective, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, superpolite forms, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. While precise color terms are not found in the movie.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out students' translation accuracy of report text in an English education study program. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with the third-semester students as the respondents of this research. The main data source was taken from The Jakarta Post, Bicara Melalui Kain": Redefining textile narratives in Indonesia. The technique of data collection used in this research was using one instrument: the results of the student's text translation. In assessing the accuracy of students' translations, the researcher used Nababan's (2012) accuracy assessment. The data shows that from 14 respondents from third-semester students, the accuracy of students' translations was still low. The low accuracy of students' translation was caused by the lack of vocabulary where there were many missing words, mistranslations, and distortion of meaning which affected the meaning of the text based on Nababan's (2012) Accuracy assessment. Around 7 out of 14 respondents were eliminated by the researcher caused by the used of Google Translate in transferring the English text (SL) into Indonesian (TL) which does not follow the researcher's provisions in her research. Regarding the result, this research could be a reference for lectures in improving students' translation ability.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the teacher's technique in teaching English in bilingual class written by students of the English language education study program at Khairun University. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method in data collection and analysis. The instruments used were observation and interviews. The results of this study involved 1 subject, namely an English teacher, especially those who teach in bilingual class. From the results of this study, there are several teaching techniques that are used and some that are not used by the teacher to teach in bilingual class. Of the 8 techniques proposed by Amidinah (2015), there are only 3 techniques used during the learning process in the classroom. Those are panel discussion techniques, assignment techniques, and also questionanswer techniques. While the techniques that are not meant are lecture methods, discovery and simulation techniques, Inquiry techniques, travel technique and also experimental techniques. So the reason behind those techniques that do not occur in this teaching process is because they are adapted to the conditions and learning materials taught by the teacher in the classroom. where for travel techniques require students to study outside the classroom, experimental techniques are present if the material taught by the teacher is related to observing an object, lecture techniques only focus more on the teacher, while for discovery and simulation techniques only focus on understanding concepts, meanings and relationships, through an intuitive process to draw a conclusion from the learning material.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the correlation between English learners’ syntactic awareness and writing ability. It was carried out with 30 students from the 2018 cohort of the Department of English at Universitas Negeri Malang. A syntactic awareness and descriptive writing tests were used to obtain data. The data was analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient formula, Pearson product-moment formula, and SPSS 21 software by the researchers. According to the findings, with a mean score of 83.2 for the syntactic awareness test and 83.3 for the writing test, both the syntactic awareness and writing test results are satisfactory. The results also show a positive correlation between syntactic awareness and writing ability (the result was 0.702 with a significant level of 0.01, indicating a high-level correlation. Finally, the researchers suggests that lecturers emphasize the importance of syntactic awareness when it comes to improving their students' writing skills. It is also suggested that future researchers conduct further research on syntactic awareness as a strategy to improve the writing ability of English students.

Abstract

Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) refer to the more advanced mental processes outlined in Anderson and Krathwohl's updated version of Bloom's taxonomy (2021), comprising analysis, evaluation, and creation.". This research aimed to investigate the composition of HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) in language tasks and knowledge of the English textbook on titled “Pathway” To English For SMA/MA Grade X and to explain the dominant cognitive dimension used in this textbook. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. This research is classified as a content analysis. A table checklist based on the cognitive domain of the revised Bloom’s taxonomy was the instrument of this research. The findings of the research indicate that for language skills, this book is more concerned with HOT than LOTS with the percentage of HOTS at 58,34% and LOTS at 41,66%.  The result showed The most dominant level of thinking skill of language skill in this book is analyze (C4), followed by apply (C3), remember (C1), create (C6), evaluate (C5), and understand (C2).  For knowledge, it can be concluded that the composition of the Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) presented in the instruction question on the English Textbook is not lower than the Lower Order Thinking Skill (LOTS) with the percentage of HOTS at 20,83% and LOTS at 79,17%. The dominant composition is Apply (C3), followed by Remember (C1), Apply (C4), and Understand (C2).   The researcher concludes that for language skill and knowledge, the cognitive dimension of each instruction question is present in the imbalance portion. Based on the result, this book has followed the ministry of education regulation and mereka curriculum in providing HOTS material in the teaching and learning process for language skills and proving LOTS material for knowledge because grammar and vocabulary teach the basics of language. It is suggested for teachers who use this book to be innovative, and creative, even teachers can adapt from other sources in giving instruction to develop students’ critical thinking.
