Abstract

This study examines the resistance movement led by Kyai leaders of Salafiyah Islamic Boarding Schools (Pesantren) in Pandeglang and Serang Districts, Banten, against the establishment of PT Mayora factory in 2016. The resistance emerged in response to what was perceived as modern capitalist expansion threatening environmental sustainability and local cultural identity. Employing a qualitative approach with case study methodology, this research investigates traditional pesantren's dual role as religious educational institutions and as frontline defenders of ecological balance and cultural heritage. The study frames this resistance within political theology, analyzing how moral values derived from Islamic teachings inform opposition to capitalism's negative impacts on local communities. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that traditional pesantren serve both as religious educational institutions and as guardians of local wisdom through social-religious movements guided by the principle of Amar Ma'ruf Nahi Munkar (promoting good and preventing harm). The conflict illustrates the tension between economic interests and religious-cultural values. This study recommends strengthening traditional pesantren's role in maintaining socio-ecological sustainability within sustainable development frameworks.

Abstract

The study looks at how men and women in Southern Pakistan teaching Islamic subjects use AI tools and what impact this has on their digital competencies. Now that AI is used in schools, knowing how gender affects people’s ability to use these tools is necessary for ensuring that digital transformation in religious education is inclusive. There are three main objectives that drove the study. There are three main objectives: to study how AI is influenced by gender among Islamic teachers; to evaluate whether men or women are more skilled in digital use in Islamic education; and to find out whether digital talent rises as a result of using AI in teaching contexts. A survey device, used in conjunction with a quantitative research method, was deployed to collect information from 150 male and 150 female Islamic teachers. Gender differences were studied using descriptive statistics and independent sample t-tests, while multiple regression was carried out to determine if AI use played a role in increasing digital skills. The survey results indicated that males use AI more than females and that the reverse is true for digital tasks. In addition, using AI tools was shown to strongly influence digital competency development in both populations, indicating that this usage can help with greater improvements in digital skills. These results suggest ways in which policymakers, curriculum designers, and educational leaders can enhance digital literacy in religious education, especially among people from disadvantaged areas.

Abstract

This study examines the relevance of Muhammad Abed Al-Jabiri's epistemology to the dynamics of santri education in modern Islamic boarding schools that integrate religious and general education. Al-Jabiri developed an epistemology with three forms of reasoning: bayani, irfani, and burhani, each of which reflects a different approach to acquiring knowledge. Bayani reasoning emphasizes revealed texts as the main source of knowledge, while irfani reasoning emphasizes intuition and spiritual experience, and burhani reasoning focuses on rationality and empiricism. This article also discusses how Al-Jabiri's thinking plays a role in reconstructing santri education to be more adaptive to the challenges of modernity, by balancing religious values and scientific rationality. In the application of Al-Jabiri's epistemology, especially burhani reasoning, knowledge is obtained through systematic deduction, induction, and empirical observation. However, in the context of the development of modern science, this model is considered limited, so M. Amin Abdullah proposed the addition of the concept of abduction, a more dynamic and flexible hypothetical inference method. Abduction allows knowledge to develop through further testing of hypotheses, which opens up space for creative reasoning in dealing with complex phenomena.

Abstract

This study explores the efficacy of female religious counselors in mitigating religious-based violent extremism within the domestic sphere, focusing on East Bandung—an area with a high susceptibility to radicalization. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of field activities conducted by female religious counselors. The findings reveal that these counselors adopt a feminine da’wah strategy rooted in empathy, dialogue, and everyday narratives, which significantly contributes to building critical awareness, behavioral transformation, and ideological resilience within families and grassroots communities. Their performance demonstrates competency across Bloom's cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains, allowing for the effective transmission of moderate religious values and the cultivation of tolerant attitudes. Despite their strategic role, these women face structural challenges, including patriarchal resistance, limited access to specialized deradicalization training, and a lack of institutional support. The study contributes theoretically to discourses on gender, religious communication, and community-based security, highlighting female counselors as transformative agents in the fight against extremism. Practically, it underscores the necessity of integrating gender-sensitive policies in national counter-extremism strategies and calls for formal recognition and empowerment of female religious counselors as vital actors in promoting peace, inclusivity, and social resilience.

Abstract

Ecumenical dialogue is part of the post-Vatican Council II Catholic theological practice that emphasizes the importance of openness to other traditions and a shared search for truth. In the Indonesian context, which is characterized by religious diversity and the challenges of intolerance and fundamentalism, Catholic theological reflection can make an important contribution to strengthening religious moderation. This study aims to identify and correlate Catholic theological ideas on ecumenical dialogue that can be the basis for developing a relevant and contextual interfaith dialogue methodology. Using a content analysis approach and correlation of theological ideas based on an integrative literature review, this study examines Church documents, the views of Catholic theologians Yves Congar, Walter Kasper, and John Paul II, and research results that discuss interreligious moderation. The results of the study indicate that receptive ecumenism, mutual spiritual enrichment, inner reform, shared witness, and learning through dialogue can be the foundation of a methodological framework for dialogue in religious moderation without losing the integrity of each faith. The practice of interfaith dialogue in Indonesia can be enriched with a transformative approach that emphasizes reciprocal learning, shared reflection of faith, and acceptance of diversity. The contribution of this research is primarily a fresh perspective and methodology in the contextual theological study of dialogue, emphasizing that Catholic theological inspirations can be used as material for compiling a program framework to advance religious moderation.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of deep learning strategies with character education in the teaching of Bahasa Indonesia within the framework of the Merdeka (Independent) Curriculum. The primary objective is to examine how this pedagogical approach fosters meaningful, reflective, and context-driven learning experiences for students. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Makassar using participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) teachers and Grade VIII students. Findings reveal that the application of deep learning strategies actively engages students through text analysis, value-based discussions, and reflective writing, enhancing not only cognitive comprehension but also the internalization of core character values such as empathy, honesty, and responsibility. Teachers act as transformative facilitators who cultivate dialogic and humanistic learning environments, in alignment with the vision of the Merdeka Curriculum. Despite challenges such as limited instructional time and varying levels of student readiness, the approach has proven effective in shaping learners who are academically capable and morally grounded. In conclusion, the integration of deep learning and character education serves as a vital bridge between academic achievement and personal development. This research contributes both theoretically and practically to the development of adaptive, value-oriented instructional models relevant to 21st-century education. Moreover, it enriches the global discourse on holistic, values-based education and underscores the critical role of teachers as transformative agents in humanizing the learning process.
