Abstract

Improving the quality of madrasah education is a strategic imperative in addressing the challenges of educational relevance, efficiency, and equity within Indonesia’s decentralized education system. This study aims to analyze the role of Madrasah-Based Management (MBM) in enhancing educational quality through case studies at three state madrasahs in Tasikmalaya Regency: Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs—Islamic Junior High School) Negeri Pamoyanan, MTs Negeri Singaparna, and MTs Negeri Sukamanah. Using a qualitative approach and case study method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, and examined using Miles and Huberman’s interactive analysis model. The findings reveal that the effectiveness of MBM is largely determined by transformational leadership, teacher capacity-building through continuous professional development, and active community involvement in educational decision-making. Among the three institutions, MTs Negeri Sukamanah demonstrates a more structured and responsive managerial approach, while MTs Pamoyanan and MTs Singaparna still struggle with financial limitations, insufficient human resources, and low public engagement. The study highlights that MBM is not merely an administrative model but a transformative strategy that requires the synergy of institutional autonomy, supportive policies, and meaningful partnerships with local communities. As a policy contribution, this research recommends strengthening madrasah leadership training, aligning curricula with local values, increasing performance-based funding, and expanding public education literacy as key foundations for sustainable quality improvement in Indonesia's madrasah system.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore high school students' views on fasting and their experiences in receiving fasting education, using a transmission pedagogic perspective. This study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design and successfully explored 139 students' experiences through questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed with the help of NVivo 12 software, which facilitated the data tabulation process. The data analysis process was carried out through three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students get information about fasting and its values, but they only believe the information conveyed by credible subjects, who are able to practice fasting well and become role models for them. Environmental conditioning with structured fasting education programs, reinforced by harmonious collaboration between religious teachers, parents, and religious preachers, provides opportunities for students to gain insight into fasting as well as opportunities to practice the practice of fasting. In addition, the reinforcement received by students further boosts their motivation to fast. However, the influence of the peer environment, social media, and the lack of role models in daily life reduce students' intrinsic motivation and hinder the consistency of their character in carrying out the practice of fasting continuously.
Reframing scarcity through social thermodynamics and Islamic ethics: An interdisciplinary conceptual approach Sujata, Tatang

Abstract

This metatheoretical study emerges from a critical reassessment of classical economic thought, which reduces scarcity to a mere technical issue of limited resources against unlimited wants—neglecting its deeper social, ecological, and ethical dimensions. In the face of accelerating global crises marked by structural inequality, institutional decay, and environmental degradation, scarcity is better understood as a manifestation of rising social entropy—a systemic disintegration triggered by the depletion of social energy such as trust, participation, and moral legitimacy. This research aims to reframe scarcity through an interdisciplinary synthesis of social entropy theory (Bailey), social thermodynamics modeling (Tsekov), and foundational Islamic ethical principles including ‘adl (justice), amanah (trust), and mīzān (cosmic balance). Using a conceptual literature review, this study develops a theoretical framework that positions ethical and spiritual values as vital forms of social energy capable of counteracting entropy and sustaining systemic equilibrium. The findings reveal that scarcity is not simply a material deficiency but a multidimensional crisis demanding a transformative response—one rooted not only in technical rationality but also in spiritual wisdom, distributive justice, and collective moral responsibility. The study contributes a novel conceptual model that bridges physical social science with Islamic moral epistemology, offering a holistic lens for understanding scarcity while informing equitable public policy, institutional reform, and sustainable social design.

Abstract

This study examines how local government policy contributes to the effectiveness of zakat revenue collection, focusing on the case of BAZNAS in Serang Regency, Indonesia. Zakat, an Islamic fiscal obligation, serves not only as an act of worship but also as a mechanism for socio-economic redistribution. Despite its potential, zakat collection in many regions remains suboptimal due to fragmented policies and weak institutional synergy. This research addresses a critical gap in global Islamic finance literature by investigating zakat governance at the subnational level, especially in a decentralized administrative context. Using a qualitative method that includes document analysis and semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, the study explores how formal regulations, government facilitation, and inter-agency coordination shape institutional performance. The findings reveal that local policies—such as mandatory zakat deductions for civil servants, operational support, and integration of zakat into regional development planning—significantly enhance zakat income and institutional legitimacy. However, challenges such as limited bureaucratic capacity, inconsistent implementation, and fragmented institutional roles hinder optimal performance. The study concludes that effective zakat governance requires not only normative alignment with Islamic values but also robust policy design, administrative professionalism, and participatory mechanisms. By bridging institutional theory and Islamic public finance, this study offers a contextualized model of state–faith institutional synergy that may be applied to other Muslim-majority countries or regions with similar governance dynamics.

Abstract

Sharia-based Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) represent a critical driver of economic development in Indonesia, contributing significantly to employment, poverty alleviation, and local entrepreneurship. In a country with the world’s largest Muslim population, the integration of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah principles into MSME governance offers a unique pathway toward ethical and inclusive economic growth. This study investigates the institutional, financial, and socio-religious dynamics that shape the performance and sustainability of Sharia-compliant MSMEs. It explores how Islamic economic principles intersect with regulatory frameworks and market practices to influence business outcomes in this sector. The objective is to formulate a conceptual and practical model for strengthening Sharia-based MSMEs in Indonesia. Adopting a qualitative approach, this research utilizes document analysis from regulatory texts, journal articles, and Islamic economic theory. Findings reveal critical challenges in legal harmonization, limited access to Sharia-compliant financing, and inconsistent application of ‘adl (justice), amanah (trust), and raḥmah (compassion) in entrepreneurial practices. However, notable opportunities exist in the areas of community-based empowerment, halal certification, and fintech adoption aligned with Islamic values. This study contributes to both policy and academic discourses by offering an integrative perspective on Sharia-based MSMEs. It highlights the importance of strengthening tawhidic foundations in economic structures and provides a roadmap for policymakers, practitioners, and scholars committed to building an inclusive and just economic system rooted in Islamic ethics.

Abstract

This study analyzes how the sea fence phenomenon on the north coast of Banten is framed differently by national online media (Republika) and local online media (Kabar Banten). Through Robert Entman's framing perspective and social movement theory, this research explores how the two media represent the phenomenon as a manifestation of social movements, religious movements, or a combination of both with eco-theological dimensions. Using a qualitative content analysis approach to 12 news articles published in January 2025, the research found significant differences in framing strategies: Republika tends to construct narratives with moral-religious and ecotheological dimensions attached to social movements, while Kabar Banten emphasizes socio-economic aspects and local community solidarity without explicit religious dimensions. These framing differences not only reflect the media's editorial orientation, but also manifest ideological contestation in representing the relationship between religion, ecology, and social movements in Indonesia. The case of the sea fence illustrates how local environmental resistance is interpreted through distinct ideological lenses, shaped by each media outlet's institutional identity and target audience. Republika’s ecotheological framing not only moralizes environmental activism through Islamic values but also seeks to legitimize community action within a broader spiritual discourse. In contrast, Kabar Banten grounds its reporting in the immediate socio-economic struggles of coastal residents, highlighting the pragmatic and communal aspects of resistance. This juxtaposition reveals the dynamic interplay between national and local narratives in constructing meaning around ecological and religious activism. Ultimately, this study contributes to an understanding of the role of media in shaping public perceptions of ecotheology-based socio-religious movements and demonstrates how media discourse influences community solidarity and environmental consciousness in the digital era.

Abstract

This paper discusses Muhammad Shahrur’s proposal for a “new way” to practice the concept of milk al-yamin in Islam. He believes that the Qur’anic verses pertaining to milk al-yamin can no longer be applied today because of their close connection to slavery. Shahrur argues that the practice of milk al-yamin—particularly in the context of the permissibility of engaging in sexual relations without a marriage contract—can be carried out through mutual consent. This consent is formed through an agreement between a man and a woman, solely for the purpose of engaging in sexual relations. The aim of this paper is to analyze Shahrur’s arguments within the framework of his milk al-yamin theory. The method used in this paper is a normative literature study, employing a juridical-normative approach. The findings of this paper indicate that Shahrur’s theory of milk al-yamin tends to align more closely with Western values of sexual consent than with Islamic values. Moreover, Shahrur’s proposal for milk al-yamin could have significant implications for the development of family law, particularly in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the traditional economic systems of indigenous communities in Indonesia, focusing on the roles of local wisdom and cultural practices in sustaining livelihoods. The research examines Banten, West Java, Central Java, and Bali indigenous communities to understand how their economic systems integrate sustainability and cultural preservation. The study employs a qualitative ethnographic research design. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation within the respective communities. Fieldwork focused on agricultural practices, economic distribution patterns, and the integration of cultural norms in economic activities. The findings reveal that the Kasepuhan communities in Banten and West Java practice sustainable rice farming under the guidance of traditional leaders, adhering to once-a-year planting to maintain soil fertility. In Bali, the Tri Hita Karana philosophy underpins the Subak irrigation system, ensuring harmony between agriculture, nature, and spirituality. The Samin community in Central Java demonstrates resilience through crop diversity and equitable resource distribution, prioritizing communal welfare and ecological balance. This study contributes original insights into the intersection of traditional knowledge and economic sustainability, addressing gaps in previous research that have often overlooked economic practices. It highlights Indigenous economic systems' adaptability and potential to inform sustainable development strategies.

Abstract

This article proposes an integrative epistemology model based on tawḥīd (Tawḥīdī Epistemology) that synthesizes three main frameworks: Burhān al-Ṣiddīqīn (Ibn Sina's ontological argument about Wājib al-Wujūd); the Scientific Method (logico-hypothetico-verification), and the Revelation Guides Science paradigm from UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Through philosophical analysis and multidisciplinary case studies, this research demonstrates that this integration not only overcomes the science-religion dichotomy but also offers a structured methodology for dual validation (empirical and normative). This article enriches the discourse of contemporary Islamic philosophy by actualizing Ibn Sina's legacy in the context of modern science, while also addressing postmodern critiques of the objectivity of science.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to investigate and gain a comprehensive understanding of the social experiences of women who wear the veil in their everyday lives. The study seeks to achieve two key objectives: first, to discern the motivations driving women to wear the veil, and second, to examine the social dynamics governing their utilization of the veil in daily life. Employing a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data collection was carried out through interviews and observations. The findings of this study shed light on the diverse motivations that drive veiled career women to wear the veil. These motivations are rooted in various causal factors, including experiences of disturbance, societal influences, concerns, and familial issues. The overarching objective for these women is to fortify their faith and safeguard themselves against undesirable behaviors. Moreover, the study reveals that the veil holds multiple meanings for career women who wear it, such as serving as reminders, protective elements, expressions of gratitude, symbols of communication, obligations, and even challenges. The dynamics of communication among women who wear the veil, as explored in this study, encompass interactions with their immediate environment, their social circles, and communication within the workplace. These interactions elicit a spectrum of responses and reactions, ranging from rejection and alienation to serving as role models and sources of inspiration for others considering the practice of wearing the veil. This research provides valuable insights into the complex interplay of motives, meanings, and social interactions surrounding the practice of veiling among career women
