Abstract

The integration of Islamic law into Indonesia's national legal system continues to provoke significant constitutional and institutional discourse, particularly in the case of Aceh's Sharia Court (Mahkamah Syariah). Established under the special autonomy granted by Article 18 B of the 1945 Constitution, the court implemented Qanun Jinayat, an Islamic criminal code that operates within the national legal framework. This unique judicial structure highlights Indonesia's commitment to legal pluralism, while simultaneously exposing tensions between Islamic norms, human rights principles, and national legislative coherence. This study examined the legal status, institutional authority, and normative functions of the Syaria Court through the lens of constitutional law and legal pluralism. It adopts a normative legal research methodology that combines deductive reasoning, historical analysis, and case studies, and is supported by statutory documents, judicial rulings, and relevant literature. By framing the court as a hybrid institution shaped by regional autonomy and national oversight, this article offers a conceptual model of functional recognition, rather than hierarchical subordination. The findings reveal that Mahkamah Syaria exercises jurisdiction over both civil and criminal matters based on Islamic law. However, challenges remain in harmonising procedural standards, ensuring legal certainty, and accommodating plural citizenship, particularly in cases involving non-Muslim minorities. Despite these tensions, courts play a growing role in mediating religious legal traditions and constitutional imperatives. This article contributes to the broader academic discourse on judicial hybridity in decentralised states. It provides a new perspective on the adaptive function of religious courts within democratic legal systems, and proposes pathways for strengthening integration without eroding institutional pluralism.

Abstract

This study explores the operationalisation of charismatic leadership in Islamic educational institutions, focusing on MI Nurul Amal Cikawung, Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research investigates how charismatic leadership, characterised by transformative communication, moral integrity, and interpersonal cohesion, contributes to madrasah governance, character education, and the integration of Islamic values with modern management. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observations, and document analyses involving the principal, teachers, and staff. The findings revealed that charismatic leadership functions as a strategic force that enhances institutional coherence, staff discipline, and pedagogical innovation. The principal's application of Islamic ethics, inclusive decision-making, and vision-driven leadership catalysed a positive organizational climate and improved collaboration among teachers. Furthermore, charisma facilitates character formation among students by embedding moral exemplarity and mentoring into everyday practice. The study concludes that charismatic leadership, when aligned with institutional values and implemented through structured mechanisms, can serve as a sustainable model for educational transformation in faith-based settings. These findings have practical implications for leadership development programs that integrate spiritual values with managerial competencies to support the holistic advancement of Islamic education in Indonesia

Abstract

This study discusses the differences in interpretation of gender verses in Islam based on the interpretation of Jāmi’ al-Bayān by Imam al-Ṭabarī and Believing Women in Islam by Asma Barlas. The main focus of this study is the analysis of Qs. An-Nisā’ [4]: 1 on the creation of women, Qs. An-Nisā’ [4]: 3 on polygamy, and Qs. An-Nisā’ [4]: 34 on male leadership and nusyuz. This study uses the muqāran (comparative) interpretation method and Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutic theory to understand the differences in their perspectives in interpreting gender verses. The results of the study show that al-Ṭabarī uses the bi al-ma’tsur interpretation approach based on history and traditional understanding, so that his interpretation tends to be textual and maintains patriarchal norms in gender relations. In contrast, Asma Barlas criticized the approach by using critical hermeneutics to interpret the Qur'an as a book that upholds gender equality and rejects interpretations that support the patriarchal system. Analysis using Gadamer's Fusion of Horizons theory shows that these differences in interpretation are influenced by historical, social, and epistemological factors. Al-Ṭabarī lived in a society that still had a strong patriarchal system, while Asma Barlas interpreted gender verses in a modern academic context with the influence of feminism and critical studies of religious texts. This study concludes that gender interpretation in Islam should not only adhere to a textual approach but also consider social, cultural, and historical aspects to be more relevant to the values of justice and equality in Islam. This study is expected to contribute to the development of gender interpretation studies in Islam and provide new insights into a more inclusive approach to interpreting the Qur'an.

Abstract

This research aims to study the correlation between i’jaz bayani and scientific hints in the story of Maryam in the Qur’an. Using a language and science approach, this research analyzes the choice of diction, sentence structure, and word use in Surah Maryam, which shows the miracle of the language of the Qur'an. The main focus of this study is the use of the word "rutab" (wet dates), which is scientifically proven to have great benefits for pregnant and giving-birth women. This finding shows that the meaning contained in this choice of words is not only linguistically beautiful but also in accordance with modern medical facts. This shows that there is a close relationship between i’jaz bayani and scientific signals in the Al-Qur'an, as well as being a protest against orientalist accusations that doubt the miracles of the stories in the Al-Qur'an.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the shifting causes of hate speech on social media during Indonesia's 2024 political year, from individual motivations to structural factors involving economic and political interests, particularly in the context of religion and culture-based hate speech. It also examines how Islamic mass organizations—such as the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI), Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and Muhammadiyah—respond to the phenomenon of buzzers spreading hate through religious narratives and political identity. This research uses a qualitative approach, employing online observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review. The main findings reveal that hate speech does not solely stem from ideological fanaticism but also from economic pressures and a well-organized digital political architecture. Buzzers operate as paid agents within a content-production system that profits from hate, rather than acting on personal or ideological impulses. Meanwhile, the responses of Islamic organizations remain largely normative and moralistic. However, groups like NU have begun to adopt more structural interpretations of the issue. Despite this shift, the absence of systematic digital strategies and economic empowerment efforts has prevented these responses from addressing the root causes. This research offers an original contribution by connecting the economic dimensions of hate speech production with the socio-religious responses to it—an intersection that has received limited attention in studies of media and digital politics in Indonesia.

Abstract

Local wisdom is cultural values and traditions that are passed down from generation to generation, playing an important role in supporting the sustainability of the creative economy in the Baduy community. This study aims to examine how the local wisdom of the Baduy community is integrated into their creative economy practices, which include handicrafts, traditional weaving, and honey products. A qualitative approach was used in this study, with data collection through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The results of the study indicate that the local wisdom of the Baduy community, such as the principle of living in harmony with nature and strict customary rules, is the main foundation in the production and marketing of their creative products. In addition, these values also encourage environmental sustainability and maintain their cultural identity amidst the influence of modernization. This study concludes that the integration of local wisdom into the creative economy not only provides added value to the product, but also strengthens the social, cultural, and economic sustainability of the Baduy community.

Abstract

The Book of Manaqib of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jailani, published in 2011, by Ajid Thohir, offers a significant contribution to the study of Sufi historiography by illuminating a genre that is often neglected in Islamic historical scholarship. Focusing on the hagiographic narratives surrounding Sheikh Abdul Qadir Al-Jailani—a central figure in the Qadiriyya Sufi order—the book systematically examines the various versions and traditions of Manaqib literature, highlighting their role in shaping religious identities and spiritual practices among Muslim communities, particularly followers of the Qadiriyya-Naqshabandiyya orders. Using historical research methods, the study analyzes the structure, authorship, and epistemological foundations of several key Manaqib texts, arguing that these works are not only important sources for understanding the development of Islamic historiography but also serve to strengthen communal ties within the fiqh and Sufi traditions. The book shows how the Book of Manaqib functions as more than a record of miraculous deeds and virtues; It is an influential vehicle for spreading Islamic values, fostering piety, and cultivating collective memory in various Muslim societies.

Abstract

The principle of proportionality is a fundamental principle in law which emphasizes the balance between rights and obligations, and is relevant to apply in the context of husband and wife relationships. The provisions of Article 31 of Law Number 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage still base the division of roles between husband and wife on a traditional structure, which in practice is often not in harmony with contemporary social dynamics. This study uses a normative juridical approach and is analyzed qualitatively through a literature study and review of a number of Religious Court decisions. The results of the analysis show that an imbalance in the implementation of roles between husband and wife is the dominant factor in divorce cases. Although the principle of proportionality has not been explicitly accommodated in positive legal norms, its application is starting to appear in the legal considerations of several judges as a form of substantive justice. Therefore, mainstreaming the principle of proportionality in the formation of national law and family justice practices is an urgent need to realize justice, equal roles and family resilience in Islamic society in Indonesia.

Abstract

Islamic education has a crucial role in building students' character and morals based on Qur'anic values. However, social changes and technological developments require the Islamic education curriculum to continue to adapt. This research aims to analyze the implementation of a sustainable Islamic education curriculum with a thematic interpretation approach to educational verses in the Qur'an. The method used is a literature review, focusing on the curriculum content component in the Qur'an. This curriculum includes the concept of teaching and learning, faith education (aqidah), Islam (shari’a), and ihsan (morals). The concept of teaching and learning is explained in Q.S. Al-'Alaq verses 1-5, which emphasizes the importance of knowledge. Faith education is found in Q.S. Al-Baqarah verse 133, which teaches tawhid. Islamic education is explained in Q.S. An-Nuur verses 56-57, which contains orders for prayer, zakat, and obedience to the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Meanwhile, moral education is found in Q.S. Al-Isra verses 23-24, which emphasizes doing good to parents. This Qur'an-based curriculum is expected to form a relevant and sustainable Islamic education. The results of the research show that the thematic interpretation-based curriculum can integrate intellectual, spiritual, moral, and social aspects in a balanced manner and is relevant to the challenges of the times. The implementation of this curriculum is expected to create Islamic education that not only teaches science but also instills character and moral values that are important in everyday life.

Abstract

Social media has emerged as a critical arena for religious discourse, reshaping the dynamics of Islamic apologetics in contemporary Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the framing strategies employed in the digital content of Bang Zuma, a popular Muslim apologist on YouTube, particularly known for his polemical videos on Islam-Christianity debates. Drawing upon Robert Entman's framing theory and James Thrower's perspective on the social construction of religion, this research investigates how Bang Zuma’s content contributes to the reconstruction of Islamic identity and discourse within digital spaces. Using qualitative content analysis on three viral video transcripts, the study identifies four key framing strategies: (1) constructing a binary between the "authentic Jesus" and the "false Jesus"; (2) selectively appropriating Biblical texts; (3) positioning Islam as the true heir of monotheism; and (4) delegitimizing Christian theological authority. These strategies not only serve apologetic purposes but also enact a performative reconstruction of Islamic identity tailored to the logic of social media platforms. The findings reveal that Bang Zuma’s digital apologetics represent a transformation of traditional munazara practices, illustrating what Thrower describes as the “reconfiguration of religious authority” in the digital age, where legitimacy is increasingly built through visibility, engagement, and performativity rather than institutional credentials. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how digital religious actors utilize platform-based affordances to shape public perceptions of Islam, negotiate interfaith boundaries, and reconstruct theological narratives in a fragmented, algorithm-driven media ecosystem.
