Abstract

Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago located in Southeast Asia. It borders some countries in Southeast Asia and Oceania. Indonesia has a diversity of cultures, races, ethnicities, beliefs, religions, and languages. The religions that exist in Indonesia are Christianity, Catholicism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism. Buddhism in Indonesia has developed because of the Buddhayana figures who are very meritorious so we can understand the teachings of Budhayana until now. One of the most influential figures in the development of Buddhism in modern Indonesia is Bhikkhu Ashin Jinarakkhita, better known as Su Kong who was the first person in Indonesia to be ordained as a sangha member after 500 years of the collapse of the Majapahit kingdom in 1953. He brought the concept of Sang Hyang Adi Buddha or the concept of divinity to Indonesia so that Buddhism could be legally recognized in the law. One of the teaching concepts he learned was the concept of Buddhayana. In its development, Buddhayana itself has gone through various dynamics and challenges from various circles of Buddhist society in Indonesia. However, the Buddhayana Movement succeeded in uniting various patterns of Buddhist society. Some of these styles, such as Mahayana, Theravada, and Tantrayana. The view of Buddhayana must be taught to Indonesian people who still do not have a broad insight into Buddhism and the view of Buddhayana itself

Abstract

Buddhayana is a form of Buddhism adapted and accepted in a unique way in Indonesia. Buddhayana has become a symbol of harmony, unity and non-sectarianism in a pluralistic society. This research examines Buddhayana as a Buddhist tradition that has intersectarian, inclusivism and plurarism values that are in line with the value of diversity. The approach used in this research is qualitative with a literature review method through the search for primary and secondary information from various sources of books, articles, and the internet. The results of the study show that Buddhayana has successfully integrated local elements in its religious traditions, creating a unique form of Buddhism that suits the Indonesian social and cultural environment. This has been a positive contribution to interfaith harmony in Indonesia, providing a positive example of how different faiths can coexist peacefully. Buddhayana reinforces the notion of Indonesian diversity, reminding us of the importance of diverse religious cultures. Therefore, it is important to continue promoting the values of non-sectarianism and harmony so that Buddhayana and other religions remain agents of diversity in Indonesia. Buddhism in Indonesia is a successful example of interfaith harmony and religious adaptability in cultural diversity. Hopefully, the results of this research help to understand and appreciate the role of Buddhism in maintaining diversity and interfaith harmony in Indonesia and offer valuable insights into future challenges and opportunities

Abstract

This research aims to explore the concept offered by Buddhayana regarding pluralism and the implications of the Buddhayana concept of pluralism for the relations between internal sects of Buddhism and other religions. Pluralism is an idea or method that recognizes and appreciates diversity within a community or country. This means recognizing that there are different viewpoints, values, beliefs, and cultures that can exist within it. Pluralism seeks to encourage tolerance, respect differences, and promote cooperation between diverse groups. This research uses library research and interviews which focus on figures from the Buddhayana Council as primary data, as well as related books as secondary data sources. The approach used is a sociological approach, which includes the concept of institutional structure as a conceptual tool. Its function is to integrate relationships and interactions within a social community. The concept of pluralism offered in Buddhayana values in dealing with the issue of plurality is the concept of active harmony. Namely the concept of coexistence with stronger associations and mutual appropriation from various traditions, schools of thought and sects in Buddhism. With the aim of showing the importance of avoiding grouping, sectarianism and forms of division

Abstract

This paper presents the ambiguity of the term ekāyana in the Satipaṭṭhānasutta in the light of inclusivism and exclusivism perspectives. Ekāyana is a familiar term in Buddhist Studies and Satipaṭṭhānasutta is a well well-known text in the Theravada insight meditation cycle. Ekāyana can be rendered in various ways according to the subjectivity and interpretation of each translator; thus, the term is ambiguous. This paper highlights the problem of Buddhist translation studies through analytical studies on several translations of the term. According to comparative analytical studies on different translations of ekāyana in the Satipaṭṭhānasutta, the researcher finds that interpretivism in translation is inevitable because finding the real meaning of a Buddhist term is an impossible task. Understandably, a translator of Buddhist texts imposes his interpretations when translating from ancient times until the present.

Abstract

The concept of kaly namitta, or good friend, is a very important part of Buddhist teachings. Two classic texts in the Buddhist canon, Sigalovada Sutta and Visuddhimagga, highlight the different but no less important role of kaly namitta in the spiritual development of a person. In Sigalovada Sutta, kaly namitta is described as a true friend who influences individual moral progress in everyday life. Sigalovada, the main character in the sutta, was instructed by the Buddha about the importance of choosing friends wisely, who would support the individual in developing good behavior and morality. Visuddhimagga emphasizes Kalyanamitta's role as a meditation teacher. In this context, Kalyanamitta acts as a spiritual guide who guides a person's meditation practice to inner peace and a deeper understanding of true reality. The meditation teacher in the Visuddhimagga is seen as a figure who holds a crucial role in the spiritual journey of a practitioner, guiding them through the various stages of meditation towards enlightenment. The differences in the emphasis on the role of Kalyanamitta in both texts describe different contexts and purposes in the teachings of Buddhism. Sigalovada Sutta emphasizes the importance of true friends in everyday life and their relationship with moral progress, while Visuddhimagga highlights the role of a meditation teacher in a person's spiritual development. However, these two concepts complement each other in one's attempt to a deeper enlightenment and understanding of Dhamma. This study uses a library study method with a Buddhist approach to analyze the differences between the concepts of kaly namitta in the two texts. The results confirm the importance of a proper understanding of these differences to avoid misunderstandings and deepen the depths of Buddhism.
