Abstract

This study investigated the design, implementation, and implications of classical book (turats) learning tools within the educational framework of Sidogiri Pesantren. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, documentation, and observation, and analyzed using an interactive model. The findings reveal that the curriculum and teaching materials for turats learning were collaboratively developed by the Tarbiyah wa Ta’lim Madrasy board (Batartama) and the teaching staff. The instructional process followed a structured sequence—comprising opening, core, and closing activities—while allowing teachers pedagogical flexibility during the core phase. Evaluation focused on both learning outcomes and instructional processes, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of student progress. The implementation of this model fostered an engaging learning environment and enhanced students’ competencies in reading classical texts, as evidenced by their achievements in various turats competitions. The study’s novelty lies in its hybrid learning model, which integrates traditional salaf methodologies with modern pedagogical principles, emphasizing systematic instructional design. Academically, this research contributes a new framework for Islamic education, offering a balanced approach that preserves heritage while embracing innovation. Practically, it serves as a guide for other pesantren seeking to improve the effectiveness of their classical book curricula through structured planning, adaptive teaching strategies, and outcome-oriented evaluation systems.

Abstract

The implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum represents a major reform in Indonesian education, emphasizing flexible, student-centered learning to develop the Pancasila Student Profile. This study addresses the perceptions of PAK teachers regarding the challenges and opportunities of implementing the Merdeka Curriculum in Ambon’s high schools. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, data were gathered through interviews, observations, and document analysis with PAK teachers from three high schools. The findings reveal diverse perceptions: some teachers regard the curriculum as an opportunity to foster creativity and student participation, while others encounter obstacles such as limited resources, technological constraints, and difficulties in developing contextualized learning modules. Theoretically, this study expands curriculum reform discourse in religious education beyond Islamic contexts, demonstrating how Christian character-building can be integrated into national reforms. From a policy perspective, the results provide valuable insights for professional development and institutional support tailored to religious education teachers in pluralistic settings. Overall, this research underscores the importance of aligning national curriculum reforms with local religious education practices to achieve effective and equitable implementation.

Abstract

Innovation and transformation in higher education have become strategic issues, particularly for religious institutions that are required to enhance access and quality while strengthening national and global competitiveness. This study examines the strategies of policy innovation and transformation implemented to address these challenges. Focusing on the State Christian Institute of Manado (IAKN), this study investigates institutional transformation in the domains of governance, academic development, and cultural adaptation. The objectives are threefold: (1) to assess the innovation and policy transformation strategies implemented by IAKN Manado in improving access and quality; (2) to analyze the institution’s distinctive models of policy innovation; and (3) to identify policy models that may serve as frameworks for strengthening religious higher education more broadly. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observation, and literature review. The findings reveal that IAKN Manado is actively pursuing transformation into a “cyber university” to respond to digital-era demands, while simultaneously reinforcing its historical and religious role in the Sulawesi region. This transformation illustrates both opportunities and constraints. The study further highlights that effective innovation and transformation in universities under the Ministry of Religious Affairs require stronger institutional support from the government to ensure sustainability and impact. Abstract

Islamic education in Indonesia has historically played a key role in shaping both religious and societal values. However, in the face of globalization, technological advancement, and modern societal demands, traditional Islamic educational models are under pressure to evolve. This study aims to reconceptualize Islamic education in Indonesia, exploring how it can balance the preservation of religious values with the necessity for modernization. The research employed a qualitative approach, using interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), observations, and document analysis to gather data from a variety of Islamic educational institutions, including pesantren, madrasah, and universities. The findings revealed significant gaps in the integration of technology, a narrow curriculum that lacks modern subjects, and insufficient emphasis on critical thinking and intercultural competence. These findings highlight the need for curricular reform, greater use of digital tools, and teaching methods that promote critical engagement with both religious and secular knowledge. The study concludes that for Islamic education in Indonesia to remain relevant and impactful, it must embrace modern educational practices while preserving its core religious identity. This research advances the field by providing a strategic framework for integrating modern subjects into Islamic education, thus ensuring that students are better prepared for both religious and global societal roles. Future studies should focus on the long-term impacts of these reforms and the development of effective training programs for educators in Islamic institutions.

Abstract

Education in Indonesia continues to face challenges, particularly the mismatch between graduates’ skills and labor market demands, alongside increasing social and moral issues. This study seeks to integrate Paulo Freire’s principles of conscientization, humanization, and dialogue with Islamic values of social justice, drawing on the hadith concerning the liberation of Badr War prisoners as a conceptual basis. Using a qualitative approach, the research applies content analysis of Freire’s works and classical hadith sources, supported by field studies at SMK Syahida Tasikmalaya. Findings show that the application of this transformative model in vocational schools encourages active student participation through critical discussions, social reflection, and contextual learning relevant to daily realities, including skills that strengthen family economies. Teachers report that the model assists in adapting lessons to students’ needs, particularly for those who lag behind, though challenges remain in administrative burdens and structural limitations. Students generally respond positively, describing the approach as more interactive, engaging, and socially relevant. This study concludes that integrating Islamic values with Freire’s critical pedagogy provides a strong foundation for vocational education grounded in social justice. Policy implications include strengthening teacher training, making curricula more flexible, and adopting evaluation methods that emphasize social contribution.

Abstract

The effectiveness of a curriculum depends on its alignment with a coherent scientific philosophy that reflects real conditions. This study examines the application of the philosophy of scientific harmonization in the curriculum structure of K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid State Islamic University (UIN) Pekalongan. Using a qualitative field research approach, data were collected from university leadership, lecturers, and the institutional transition team, alongside supporting documentation. Analysis employed an interactive model of data reduction, presentation, and verification. Findings indicate that UIN Pekalongan deliberately adopted the philosophy of scientific harmonization to overcome the dichotomy between religious and general sciences. This approach avoids both extreme theocentric and anthropocentric orientations, promoting instead a balanced integration framed as the “Arc of Scientific Harmonization” or “Scientific Orchestra,” with Tauhid serving as its unifying foundation. The curriculum structure reflects this principle by allocating 44% of credits to general sciences and 36% to religious sciences, achieving an overall integration rate of 17%. While this model successfully balances religious and general knowledge, a significant limitation is the minimal inclusion of technology-related courses, which account for only 3% of the curriculum. This gap poses challenges for institutional competitiveness in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The study concludes that UIN Pekalongan has made important strides in implementing a harmonized curriculum model, yet greater emphasis on technological content is needed to ensure its sustainability and relevance in the digital era.

Abstract

Plagiarism has become a pressing concern in higher education, yet its dynamics within Islamic universities remain largely underexplored. Addressing this gap, the present study investigates the extent of plagiarism among students at an Indonesian State Islamic University and the main factors influencing this academic misconduct. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study combined survey data with interview evidence to capture both the prevalence and underlying causes of plagiarism. The findings reveal that the overall level of plagiarism among students is relatively high. Among the contributing factors, deficiencies in academic skills emerged as the most prominent, particularly in the ability to paraphrase, synthesize, and properly reference academic work. In addition, the growing familiarity with information and communication technologies (ICT), including artificial intelligence tools, and certain pedagogical practices further facilitated students’ engagement in plagiarism. The convergence of quantitative and qualitative evidence underscores the interplay between limited academic competencies and technological accessibility as key drivers of plagiarism in this context. This study advances the understanding of plagiarism in Islamic higher education by providing empirical evidence from an under-researched region in Indonesia. The findings also carry significant policy implications for the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Islamic universities, highlighting the need for curriculum reforms that integrate academic integrity education, systematic skill training, and the deployment of effective plagiarism- and AI-detection tools. By addressing both structural and pedagogical dimensions, this study contributes to strengthening a culture of academic honesty in Islamic higher education

Abstract

This research examines religious moderation at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri (MIN) 1 Bintan, focusing on the children of the Sea Tribe from Kampung Panglong, Desa Village, Bintan Regency, Riau Islands Province, who choose to attend this madrasah despite being Catholic and Protestant. This study employs historical research methods, with data collection through field interviews and literature studies. The results indicate that in the 2024/2025 academic year, there are 10 non-Muslim children from the Sea Tribe attending MIN 1 Bintan. There are three main factors that lead them to choose this school: first, the relatively close distance to their village; second, the historical factor, as since the 1990s, Sea Tribe children have been attending MIN 1 Bintan and the school has actively approached the Sea Tribe leader to facilitate their education; and third, the comfort factor, where Sea Tribe children feel comfortable attending school MIN 1 Bintan. In practice, there are four well-maintained indicators of religious moderation in this school, namely national commitment, tolerance among students of different ethnicities and religions, the absence of coercion to convert to another religion or wear Islamic attributes, and the absence of violence and respect for the local culture of the Sea Tribe. These findings show that MIN 1 Bintan can become a pilot madrasah for religious moderation in Riau Islands Province.

Abstract

The implementation of global curricula in Islamic schools faces challenges, as some teachers and students have not yet been able to adapt optimally . This study examines the integration of the Cambridge Curriculum at SMA ABBS Surakarta, focusing on planning, implementation, evaluation, as well as supporting and inhibiting factors. Employing a qualitative field research design with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The research subjects included the principal, vice principal for curriculum, teachers, and students. The findings reveal that successful implementation of the Cambridge Curriculum in this Islamic school is supported by three main pillars. First, the readiness of human resources, built through tiered training programs and international certification, with teachers required to have at least CEFR B2 English competency. Second, the adoption of innovative learning methods, particularly student-centered learning, practical activities, and authentic assessments that align with Cambridge International standards. Third, adequate infrastructure that meets international benchmarks, thereby facilitating effective curriculum delivery. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on the application of the Cambridge Curriculum within an Islamic school context, which remains relatively rare in Indonesia. The research contributes to the broader discourse on curriculum globalization by highlighting how Islamic schools can integrate international standards while maintaining their religious identity. Practically, the study implies the need to strengthen teacher competencies, sustain infrastructure support, and develop adaptive learning strategies to ensure broader success in similar institutions.

Abstract

Digital technology has reshaped the way university students access religious information, especially through social media platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. This study aims to examine the influence of da'wah content exposure on these platforms toward students’ understanding of religious moderation. Using a mixed methods approach with a sequential explanatory design, data were collected from 108 students at UIN Mataram through a survey, supported by in-depth interviews with four key informants. Instrument validity and reliability were tested using the Rasch Model, which yielded satisfactory results. The findings indicate a positive and significant correlation between the intensity of social media exposure and students’ comprehension of moderation values (r = 0.499; p < 0.001). The instrument used was proven to be valid and capable of identifying inconsistent response patterns. This research offers novelty through applying the Rasch approach in digital religious studies and integrating social learning theory in analyzing the religious understanding of digital natives. Limitations include the use of a single-site sample and potential bias from algorithm-driven exposure. Future research is recommended to include broader participant demographics and longitudinal approaches to observe changes over time in a more comprehensive manner.
