Abstract

This research aims to determine the functions and methods of preserving old manuscripts in the Sasak community in the west Sakra district. This research is motivated by the existence of manuscripts that have a function in the culture of the Sasak community in the West Sakra sub-district and proves whether the use of certain manuscripts is limited to community suggestions or whether there are other purposes. Data collection was carried out by observation and interviews with an emic approach and analyzed using functional theory. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that the Jatiswara script serves as a ‘circumcision’ diving ritual for boys because diving is an Islamic process as described in the Jatiswara text, namely the mulene game slam ‘a person’s Islam is not perfect if it has not been circumcised. The Indarjaya script serves as a remedy for people who are ‘unable to speak’. It is depicted in the story of the daughter who could not speak, namely the princess nengke kayun ngandike ‘the princess wants to talk’. While the Selandir script serves as a ritual remedy for kepaq people ‘cannot walk’. It was described in Selandir’s text that reads still lemper bise lumaris ‘still unable to walk. Meanwhile, the manuscript preservation process is carried out in two ways, namely internal and external. Internally, preservation is carried out by direct inheritance and copying of manuscripts. Meanwhile, external preservation is carried out by establishing customary institutions, puppetry, digitization, translation, and transformation of manuscripts.

Abstract

Al-Maliki 2 Sukodono Islamic Boarding School employs a distinctive approach by implementing a bilingual education system using both English and Arabic languages. However, in this regard, there are several obstacles, namely lack of students’ enthusiasm, inconsistency, lack of interest and family support, as well as limited facilities. Therefore, to address these issues, a concept is introduced that every student who wishes to become a member of that community is required to use the same language, either English or Indonesian. Furthermore, the reserach aims to demonstrate various types of motivation that can be employed by educators, institutions, and parents. Al-Maliki 2 Sukodono Islamic Boarding School implements bilingual education, incorporating both English and Arabic for communication. However, throughout this process, several barriers hinder the students, such as a lack of interest in foreign languages and inadequate support from families with no foreign language background. This research explores the process of acquiring English as a second language for students and emphasizes the significance of the environment in second language learning. Data can be collected through speaking or writing tasks, where participants are asked to generate specific language. This aids in understanding the language production process, planning, and decision-making involved in selecting words and sentence structures. The findings of this research are expected to assist schools and non-formal institutions as organizers in identifying motivational approaches that can be applied to students in English language learning. Ultimately, this can lead to improved quantity and quality of students’ English language proficiency, fulfilling Indonesia’s workforce demands.

This research probes into the use of figurative language, particularly expressions and metaphors, within sports reporting's context. The study’s focal point was the June 1, 2018 edition of the esteemed Indonesian newspaper, Java Pos, renowned for its vibrant sports reporting, particularly in football. Data consisted of expressions and metaphors in the form of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and numerals, sourced from Java Pos' sports reporting (June 1, 2018 edition), especially relating to football. The methodology involved participatory observation reading 7 football-specific sports pieces and scrutinizing each for expressions and metaphors. Additionally, documentation was employed collecting and analyzing articles from the designated edition to assess metaphors and expressions through a figurative language lens. Post data collection, data was condensed and classified by category (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and numerals) then verified and interpreted contextually. Content analysis was applied for data analysis, comprehending the contextual use and its impact on reader comprehension. The findings unveiled the presence of expressions and metaphors, encompassing verb phrases, nouns, adjectives, and numerals, in the news reports. This study uncovers the usage of figurative language, enriching communication, fostering creativity, and contributing to elevated sports reporting quality and deeper audience understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to look at the reduplication patterns in the Western Languages of Flores, i.e., MRK Language Subgroup (Manggarai, Rembong, and Komodo). These three languages are grouped according to the results of the calculation of the percentage of similar languages made by Fernandez (1996). Data was collected through secondary data collection from pre-existing datasets, including field notes and dictionaries. Direct interviews with native speakers representing each language strengthen secondary data with more in-depth information. The analysis revealed that there are similar patterns found in full reduplication accompanied by changes in vowel phonemes as in laki-lako 'going everywhere' in Manggarai, zupak-zapaq 'hassle' in Rembong, and cuki-cake 'naughty' in Komodo. Partial reduplication, on the other hand, generally takes the form of adding or removing final phonemes in repeated words, for example, bingi-bangas 'dull-witted' in the Manggarai Language, daki-dekang 'helping each other' in the Rembong Language, and hipi-hapek 'going here and there' in Komodo Language. The Rembong Language has a distinctive partial reduplication, the presence of rhyme sounds at the beginning as in ghali-ghewe 'miserable life' and at the end of words as in kameq-mok 'sucks'. Partial reduplication in Komodo Language only involves the repetition of the initial syllable as in kekaro (karo-karo) 'walkings'. It is hoped that this research can be a reference for further research to explore more deeply reduplication in the MRK Language, either refuting the results in this research or supporting it by providing more data

Abstract

The landscape of higher education in Indonesia underscores the significance of English proficiency for academic advancement. Traditionally, English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction heavily relied on face-to-face classroom interactions guided by lecturers. However, the emergence of information technology has revolutionized learning paradigms, offering EFL students diverse opportunities beyond conventional classroom boundaries. This study investigates the pivotal role of social media platforms in enhancing the writing skills of EFL students. Utilizing a descriptive research design, data were collected from 54 participants enrolled in English III classes in 2021, focusing on English writing. Quantitative data and specific examples were gathered through questionnaires and interviews. The findings revealed a resoundingly positive response from students regarding the efficacy of social media in improving their writing skills. Furthermore, the study elucidated various benefits derived from social media use, including enhanced writing proficiency, expanded English vocabulary, and overall effectiveness as a supplementary learning tool. Thus, it is evident that social media harbors immense potential as a complementary platform for bolstering English writing skills, particularly for EFL students, offering a modern approach to language education.

Abstract

Multimodality involves the strategies employed by semiotic analysis by implicating semiotic modes of interpretation along with technology in media. The object used is the movie Dong Yi (2010). Multimodal discourse in movies is used to express symbols. The symbols in question are the content of messages, sounds, conversations, costumes, movements, images, and so on in the film. The purpose of using multimodal in the film Dong Yi (2010) is to know the form of multimodal discourse in the film and to know the function of multimodal discourse in the film and understand the complexity of meaning that needs to be analyzed multimodally. The aspects of multimodal discourse used in Dong Yi (2010) Episode 5 are language, image, music, sound, and movement by optimizing the realization of semiotics. This research uses multimodal discourse approach with qualitative research type. The results found 12 language data, 30 image data, 14 music data, 19 sound data, 8 movement data. Dong Yi (2010) episode 5 optimizes five aspects of multimodality (language, image, music, sound, and movement) by using ideas from other eras and as a potential meaning of the experience of ideas in the discourse process. The function of multimodal discourse in the movie Dong Yi (2010) Episode 5 is to complement and strengthen previous research in the field.
