Abstract

Blitar Regency, as one of the robusta coffee producing areas, faces common problems such as the lack of knowledge of post-harvest technology, lack of packaging quality, and the selling value of farmers' products. Community service activities were conducted with the aim of increasing the capacity of smallholder farmers in Blitar Regency in terms of coffee processing and packaging. The activity was carried out with a participatory and educative approach involving 50 farmers from three main coffee-producing districts. The workshop covered fermentation techniques, drying, roasting, to modern packaging design and marketing strategies. The results showed significant improvements in participants' knowledge and skills, with post-test scores increasing 42% from the pre-test. The main constraints found were limited infrastructure, capital, and market access. As a long-term solution, sustainable mentoring, the improvement of market access through e-commerce, and the establishment of coffee processing centers at the district level are suggested. This program is proven to have a positive impact on improving product quality and farmers' welfare and has the potential to improve the regional economy.

Abstract

Healthy and sustainable agricultural practices emphasize ecosystem balance by rejecting the use of harmful chemicals and adopting organic fertilizers derived from natural sources. In Indonesia, organic agriculture has begun to develop in response to growing public awareness of environmental issues. However, the implementation of these practices continues to face challenges, including limited farmer understanding and participation. The looming threat of climate change further underscores the urgency of adopting sustainable agricultural practices to ensure global food security. A community engagement program on sustainable agriculture was conducted in Tawangargo Village, Malang Regency, aiming to support food self-sufficiency and enhance regional food resilience. The program emphasized collaboration among the government, farmers, and local communities to promote the adoption of sustainable farming practices. This community service activity was carried out from June to September 2024. The primary targets were conventional farmers and residents who had never engaged in cultivation. Additionally, the program involved key stakeholders such as government representatives, academics, and the general public interested in agricultural development in the area. The overarching goal was to deliver broad benefits to the community and improve overall well-being. The implemented activities included: (1) raising awareness of sustainable agriculture through the cultivation of healthy vegetables using liquid organic fertilizer (POC) derived from household materials, (2) distributing Compost Bags to members of the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) to process organic household and yard waste, and (3) providing guidance on the use of Compost Bags and implementing home-based agriculture by utilizing household waste. The results of this community engagement activity indicate that education and assistance in the use of liquid organic fertilizers and Compost Bags effectively increased public awareness regarding the importance of sustainable agriculture and household organic waste management. Through the cultivation of healthy vegetables and the use of household waste as compost materials, the community—particularly PKK women—gained a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship and the application of eco-friendly, home-based agricultural concepts.

Abstract

Bambang Village, which is geographically located in Wajak District, Malang Regency, is known to have a prominent dual economic potential, namely from the coffee plantation and cattle farming sectors. Despite its high economic potential, Bambang Village is faced with two interrelated agronomic and environmental issues. Block Compost is a specific, efficient, simple, but highly efficient technological innovation. The implementation of Block Compost adopts a Circular Economy or Zero Waste approach. In the context of agronomic applications, Block Compost has proven to be very effective on lands with extreme environmental conditions, such as sandy lands, post-mining land, and locations with low rainfall. The community service program through training in making Block Compost in Bambang Village, Wajak District, Malang Regency, succeeded in overcoming a double problem, namely the accumulation of cow feces waste and the degradation of the physical properties of sandy soil in people's coffee plantations. This program creates a zero-waste solution that integrates the livestock and agricultural sectors, while providing economic added value through the conversion of waste into fertilizer products with selling value, thereby supporting the economic independence of the village.

Abstract

PCoffee productivity in UB Forest has been categorized as low in recent years, ranging from approximately 100–400 kg ha⁻¹ year⁻¹. This low productivity is presumed to be associated with land suitability constraints, particularly soil chemical characteristics such as pH and cation exchange capacity (CEC). One approach to improving subsoil chemical properties is the application of compost and lime through biopore infiltration holes (LRB). This study aimed to analyze the effects of biopore infiltration holes filled with compost and lime on soil pH and CEC, as well as their relationship with coffee productivity. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with seven treatments and four replications, consisting of: P0 (control), P1 (empty biopore), P2 (biopore + 1.5 t ha⁻¹ lime), P3 (biopore + 10 t ha⁻¹ compost), P4 (biopore + 20 t ha⁻¹ compost), P5 (biopore + 10 t ha⁻¹ compost + 1.5 t ha⁻¹ lime), and P6 (biopore + 20 t ha⁻¹ compost + 1.5 t ha⁻¹ lime). The results showed that five months after application, treatment P2 significantly increased soil pH at depths of 0–30 cm and 30–60 cm. Treatment P6 increased soil CEC by 28.12% at 0–30 cm and by 21.78% at 30–60 cm. Regression analysis indicated that coffee productivity was influenced by soil CEC and base saturation (Kdd) at the 30–60 cm depth (Y = –4084.997 + 89.6751X₁ + 5310.517X₂; R² = 0.7244), where Y = coffee productivity (g plant⁻¹ year⁻¹), X₁ = CEC (mEq 100 g⁻¹), and X₂ = base saturation (mEq 100 g⁻¹). These findings suggest that the application of biopore infiltration holes has the potential to improve subsoil quality and enhance coffee productivity.
