Abstract

This study evaluates the morphological, physical, and chemical characteristics of Inceptisols and their implications for Robusta coffee productivity in smallholder plantations in Karangploso District, Malang Regency, Indonesia. The research was conducted from January to April 2025 using a soil survey approach, where composite soil samples were collected from five representative plantation sites within 10 m × 10 m plots at depths of 0–20 cm, 20–40 cm, and 40–60 cm. Soil properties were assessed through field observations and laboratory analyses, complemented by measurements of tree morphology and yield components from five coffee plants per plot. The results reveal that the soils are classified as Inceptisols with considerable spatial variability, characterized by slopes ranging from 8% to 35%, predominantly clay to clay loam textures, and highly stable soil aggregates. Soil chemical properties indicate slightly acidic to acidic pH conditions, high to very high cation exchange capacity (CEC), and moderate to high base saturation. Regression analysis demonstrates that CEC, base saturation, and sand fraction significantly influence coffee productivity, while excessive clay content acts as a key limiting factor by restricting aeration and root development. These findings highlight the critical role of soil physicochemical properties in determining coffee yield performance and provide a scientific basis for site-specific soil management. The application of conservation tillage, organic amendments (compost and manure), and soil structure improvement strategies is therefore recommended to enhance soil quality and sustain coffee production in smallholder systems.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to empower farmers through the utilization of biological control agents in integrated pest and disease management in Bambang Village, Wajak District, Malang Regency. The program was conducted using an educative-participatory approach involving training, hands-on practice, and limited field application. A total of 20 farmers participated in the activity. The results showed an increase in farmers’ knowledge, with an average improvement of 35% based on pre-test and post-test evaluations. Participants were able to understand the role of biological control agents such as Trichoderma sp., Beauveria bassiana, and Pseudomonas fluorescens in suppressing plant pathogens and supporting plant health. During the training, participants successfully performed the propagation of biological agents using simple local materials, with satisfactory microbial growth and minimal contamination. In addition, participants demonstrated a positive shift in attitude, indicated by a tendency to reduce the use of chemical pesticides and consider more environmentally friendly alternatives. Limited field application also indicated a positive response in plant condition after the use of biological agents. The activity suggests that participatory training combined with practical experience has the potential to enhance farmers’ capacity in understanding and applying biological control agents. However, further assistance is needed to support sustained adoption at the farm level. This approach can serve as a relevant strategy to promote sustainable agriculture, particularly in integrated pest and disease management.

Abstract

Unsustainable agroecosystem management may increase crop susceptibility to pests and diseases while disrupting ecological balance. This study was conducted at the Jatimulyo Experimental Field, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Brawijaya, to evaluate the effects of two cultivation systems, namely the Semi Agroecosystem Management System (MAES) and the conventional farming system. The study assessed arthropod diversity and functional roles, the intensity of northern corn leaf blight and common rust diseases, vegetative growth, sweet corn productivity, and the economic feasibility of both cultivation systems. The results demonstrated that the MAES approach, which integrates sweet corn–mung bean intercropping with biological control agents, significantly enhanced arthropod diversity, particularly the abundance of natural enemies that contribute to biological pest regulation. In addition, MAES reduced the severity of leaf blight and rust diseases, promoted better plant growth, and produced higher husk-free ear weight than the conventional system. However, short-term economic analysis revealed that the conventional system generated greater net profit due to its lower initial variable production costs. Overall, the findings indicate that ecologically based agroecosystem management provides superior ecological stability and improves crop productivity, although it requires a higher initial investment than conventional farming. These results highlight the potential of MAES as a sustainable cultivation strategy for improving agricultural productivity while conserving agroecosystem health.

Abstract

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) requires the availability of biological control agents as one of its environmentally friendly control components. In practice, farmers' knowledge and skills for producing these agents independently remain limited. This community service activity aimed to build the capacity of farmers from the Ngudi Makmur Farmer Group (Gapoktan) in Purworejo Village, Gemolong District, Sragen Regency, to produce and apply biological control agents. The activity took place on 6 December 2025 through extension, demonstration, and hands-on practice, covering the introduction of biological control agent characteristics (Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, Trichoderma sp., and Pseudomonas fluorescens), mass propagation on solid media, inoculation, incubation, quality control through spore density measurement and viability testing, and application on demonstration plots. The results show that farmers' understanding of the role of natural enemies and the working mechanisms of biological control agents improved, along with their technical skills from production through to field application. Farmers also came to understand the environmental factors that influence the effectiveness of biological control agents, such as humidity and ultraviolet exposure. This activity strengthened the Gapoktan's commitment to reducing dependence on chemical pesticides, while opening opportunities to develop a biological control agent production unit as a group economic enterprise supporting sustainable agricultural systems.

Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a strategic food commodity whose productivity at the farmer level is frequently constrained by diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, and viruses, reducing not only grain yield but also grain quality. A persistent obstacle in the field is farmers' limited ability to identify disease symptoms accurately, which often leads to mismatched control measures. This activity aimed to strengthen the capacity of farmers at Gapoktan Ngudi Makmur, Purworejo Village, Gemolong District, Sragen Regency, in recognizing major rice diseases, understanding the disease triangle concept, and applying field-level disease diagnosis principles. The activity was held on 24 January 2026 as part of the Farmer School, delivered through classroom presentation and interactive discussion supported by visual educational media. Nine major rice diseases were introduced, namely blast, bacterial leaf blight, tungro, sheath blight, brown spot, bacterial sheath rot, grassy stunt, ragged stunt, and stem rot, along with their causal agents, main symptoms, triggering conditions, and control measures. The disease triangle concept was used to explain that disease arises from the interaction of host plant, pathogen, and environment, while field diagnosis principles helped participants distinguish disease symptoms from physiological disorders such as nutrient deficiency. Results indicated an improvement in participants' understanding of disease types, causal agents, and a more systematic diagnostic approach, which is expected to encourage more targeted and sustainable disease management practices in the rice fields of Gapoktan Ngudi Makmur.

Abstract

Chili pepper (Capsicum spp.) is a high-value horticultural commodity whose production is frequently constrained by diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes, which can substantially reduce yield when left unrecognized and unmanaged. Farmers' limited ability to identify disease types and understand the factors driving their development in the field remains a recurring obstacle in cayenne pepper cultivation. This activity aimed to strengthen the capacity of farmers at the Ngandong Jaya Farmer Group, Ngandong Village, Grabagan District, Tuban Regency, in recognizing major chili pepper diseases and understanding the disease triangle concept as a basis for designing control strategies. The activity was conducted on 25 January 2025 as part of the Farmer School program, beginning with routine observation of the demonstration plot and sampling of symptomatic plants for diagnosis, followed by group discussion and a dedicated presentation by Dr. Ir. Mintarto Martosudiro, M.S. of the Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Bio-industry, Universitas Brawijaya. The material covered the three components of the disease triangle, namely host plant, pathogen, and environment, together with management strategies for each component as a foundation for applying Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles. Ten major chili pepper diseases were also introduced, comprising anthracnose, Phytophthora blight, Fusarium wilt, bacterial wilt, Cercospora leaf spot, bacterial leaf spot, mosaic virus, yellow disease, root and collar rot, and root-knot nematode, together with their causal pathogens and main symptoms. Results indicated an improvement in farmers' understanding of chili pepper diseases and the disease triangle framework, which is expected to encourage more targeted and sustainable disease management practices at the Ngandong Jaya Farmer Group.

Abstract

The rice agroecosystem is a dynamic system that cannot be separated from the presence of various organisms, including major rice pests. High cultivation intensity, uniform cropping patterns, and dependence on certain inputs can increase pest pressure within the paddy ecosystem. This activity aimed to build the capacity of farmers from the Ngudi Makmur Farmer Group (Gapoktan) in Purworejo Village, Gemolong District, Sragen Regency, through an introductory session on major rice pests held during the sixth meeting of the Farmer School program. The activity took place on 27 December 2026 through classroom and field sessions, covering the introduction of five major rice pests (stem borer, planthopper/leafhopper, rice bug, rat, and leaffolder) along with their damage symptoms and life cycles, followed by hands-on field observation and pest identification. The results show improved participant understanding of major pest types and their damage symptoms, the ability to identify pests based on morphological characteristics and damage symptoms, and an appreciation of the importance of routine monitoring for early detection. Participants also committed to applying routine pest monitoring practices, as an initial step toward Integrated Pest Management expected to reduce losses from pest attacks and support sustainable agriculture at Gapoktan Ngudi Makmur.

Abstract

The decline in lowland soil fertility is a major constraint to improving rice productivity and fertilizer use efficiency at the farm level, primarily caused by unbalanced fertilization, low organic matter application, and inappropriate timing and methods of fertilizer application. This community service activity aimed to implement the Participatory Soil Fertility Management (PSFM) approach as a farmer empowerment strategy for participatory soil fertility diagnosis. The activity was conducted in the Ngudi Makmur Farmer Group, Sragen Regency, through a Farmer Field School approach integrated with Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA). The activity stages included initial condition identification, soil fertility training, the use of a rice field diagnostic card, group discussions, and the implementation and evaluation of soil management strategies. The results showed that soil fertility management practices were still dominated by the use of urea as the main fertilizer (98%), the absence of balanced fertilization with N, P, and K (76%), and low organic matter application (60%). In addition, most farmers did not apply fertilizers in stages or according to crop growth phases, leading to low nutrient use efficiency. Participatory diagnosis indicated that the main soil fertility constraints were low organic matter (score 5.8), nitrogen inefficiency (5.2), and potassium deficiency (4.9). The implementation of PSFM significantly improved farmers’ capacity to understand soil conditions, perform independent soil fertility diagnosis, and adopt more appropriate and balanced fertilization practices. Furthermore, the approach encouraged behavioral changes toward more efficient and sustainable farming practices, contributing to improved productivity and long-term sustainability of lowland rice farming systems.
