Abstract

In the evolving landscape of education, the fusion of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines with literacy education emerges as a pivotal strategy for fostering comprehensive learning. Despite its significance, elementary schools face obstacles in seamlessly incorporating STEM principles into their curricula, highlighting a gap in effective STEM-based educational practices. This research endeavors to pinpoint the hurdles impeding STEM integration and to devise strategic interventions aimed at bolstering STEM-centric learning, with a special emphasis on enhancing student literacy. Through detailed observations and dynamic discussions with key school stakeholders—including Principals and faculty members—the study identified foundational challenges such as a limited grasp of STEM concepts among teachers, a scarcity of relevant instructional materials, an absence of innovative strategies for teaching literacy and technology, and a general unfamiliarity with STEM-focused pedagogy. Responding to these challenges, the study orchestrated a series of targeted interventions. These included Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to foster a collaborative learning environment, literacy-centric training workshops to empower educators, an expansion of school library resources to include STEM-related materials, and support in crafting student textbooks that are oriented towards STEM learning. The post-intervention phase unveiled significant progress: educators exhibited a more profound understanding of how to develop STEM-focused learning materials and acknowledged the critical role of literacy and numeracy in student education. The strategic interventions not only mitigated the initial barriers but also equipped educators in elementary schools with the essential tools and knowledge to guide their students through an integrated learning journey in literacy and numeracy, underpinned by the core tenets of STEM education. This transformation underscores the effectiveness of the tailored approaches in enhancing the educational framework to support student success in a STEM-driven future.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore how EFL teachers manifest their agency in the development of professional identities. The study is narrative inquiry involving eight EFL teachers from Madrasah around Indonesia. Data were collected through narrative frames followed by in-depth interview to clarify blurred stories written in narrative frames. The data were analyzed and elaborated into three themes, the novices, beyond the shell: the journey to be professional teachers, and the lifelong learners. The result shows that the dynamic change enacted by Madrasah EFL teachers can be categorized into three dimensions, the iterational, the practical evaluative, and the projective dimension.

Abstract

The background to this research is based on the learning process during the Covid-19 pandemic which was carried out at home in order to break the chain of spread of Covid-19. The presence of Covid-19 that has hit the world has caused an uncertain situation. The unpreparedness of all elements, including teachers, in learning is a major obstacle. The change in teaching and learning from face-to-face to online requires readiness from all elements. Therefore, the principal's leadership and teacher professionalism are two factors among other factors that can influence teacher performance during the Covid-19 pandemic. The formulation of the problem in this research is the influence of the principal's leadership on work motivation, the influence of teacher professionalism on work motivation, the influence of the principal's leadership on teacher performance, the influence of teacher professionalism on teacher performance, the influence of work motivation on teacher performance, the influence of the principal's leadership on teacher performance through work motivation, the influence of teacher professionalism on teacher performance through work motivation. This research uses quantitative methods with a descriptive approach. This research uses survey research with a sample size of 73 respondents. The data collection technique uses a questionnaire with a Likert scale. The research variables in this study are the independent variable, namely the principal's leadership which is marked with (X1) and teacher professionalism which is marked with (X2), the dependent variable is teacher performance which is marked with (Z), and the intervening variable, namely work motivation which is marked with ( Y).

Abstract

This study analyzed teacher talk in Indonesian EFL classroom. The research aimed to investigate the predominant speech act classification employed by the teacher, the factors influencing an EFL teacher using the predominant speech acts, as well as its impact on instructional activities. It applied a qualitative case study involving one English teacher as the participant. The study used Searle’s taxonomy of speech act classification as the instrument. Data were collected from the recording of classroom observation and interview. The finding of this study revealed the frequency of each classification found as the following: 69,4% for directives, 19,4% for representatives, 8,3% for expressives, and 2,8% for commissives. Directive speech acts were the most frequent used by the teacher in the classroom. The study further suggested that creating better classroom management and guiding the students became teacher’s reasons using directive speech act which potentially impacted instructional activities by influencing students’ behavior to be more attentive and engaged, making class operation smoothly, and creating productive and meaningful learning experiences. The results contribute greater insights to the dynamics of teacher-student interactions and may direct the development of effective pedagogical strategies to be used in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

History represents a set of facts from the past—events that were real and genuinely occurred in their time. Historical sources are crucial for reconstructing and generalizing history so that it can be comprehended by students. However, the limited availability of historical sources poses a significant challenge for students when learning history. This limitation can be addressed by utilizing museum websites as learning resources. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of museum websites as a learning resource for history education. Research and Development (R&D) methodology was employed in this study. The research sample consisted of 180 high school students selected from a population of 564 students in Pekanbaru City using purposive sampling techniques. Data collection was carried out through observations, expert validation questionnaires, product trial questionnaires, and historical thinking skills tests. The collected data were analyzed quantitatively using t-tests to assess the impact of museum websites as a learning resource for students. The results indicated that the developed museum website was valid and reliable, and the t-test analysis showed a significant impact of the museum website as a history learning resource, with a significance value of 0.000 (less than 0.05).

Abstract

Academic writing is a crucial skill for Indonesian university students, significantly influencing their EFL learning performance. This systematic literature review aims to examine the diverse learning strategies employed by these students to enhance their academic writing skills and reveal the predominant strategy employed by the students. Combining systematic literature review and thematic analysis, this study reveals five categories for academic writing strategies, those are metacognitive, cognitive, social, affective, and compensation strategies. This study highlights a predominant use of metacognitive strategies, comprising 36% of the strategies identified. This emphasis underscores students' commitment to higher-order thinking during the writing process and highlights the importance of metacognition in effective language learning. The distribution of cognitive, social, affective, and compensation strategies illustrates a multifaceted approach to academic writing. The findings emphasize the adaptability of EFL university students in Indonesia in addressing academic writing challenges through various strategies, thereby promoting a comprehensive learning environment. This study recommends further investigation into cultural and contextual factors influencing strategy selection, providing educators with insights for tailored instructional practices.
