Abstract

Livestock waste management in Lempake Subdistrict, Samarinda City, presents a significant challenge in achieving sustainability within the livestock sector, especially in urban areas. Improper livestock waste management can lead to water, air, and soil pollution, negatively affecting health and environmental quality. This community service program aims to optimize livestock waste management by applying Circular Economy (CE) principles to reduce environmental impact by recycling livestock waste into biogas and organic compost. The program involves the Krida Karya Utama Farmers Group as the subject of the service, with the primary goal of enhancing the community’s knowledge and skills in sustainable waste management. The methods used include training, outreach, and the application of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) principles to ensure the involvement of women in waste management. The program results show an increase in the farmers’ knowledge and skills, which directly impacts the economic resilience of farming families, especially for women. Additionally, Circular Economy-based waste management can reduce pollution and optimize the use of waste as a valuable resource for the community. Despite challenges related to infrastructure and the community’s understanding of the circular economy, this program has contributed positively to the sustainability of the livestock sector and the socio-economic welfare of the community.

Abstract

Margamulya Village is a center for producing green coffee beans that faces problems in managing coffee husk waste from coffee grinding. On the other hand, many residents have livestock businesses, so coffee husk waste has the potential to become alternative feed for ruminants, especially goats and sheep. This community service program aims to improve farmers' knowledge and skills in utilizing coffee husks as an alternative feed ingredient. The activities were carried out in several stages, namely observation, socialization and discussion, identification of coffee husks, processing training, feed administration assistance, and evaluation through pre-tests and post-tests. The program was attended by 40 farmers from the Raharja livestock group in Ciwidey, Bandung, West Java. The results of the activities showed a positive impact in the form of a 30% reduction in coffee husk waste used as livestock feed mixture, as well as an increase in the availability and quality of livestock feed. The main obstacle in the implementation was the limited tools and space for drying coffee husks. As a follow-up, this program encourages the continuity of feed processing from upstream to downstream. This initiative is a concrete step in creating sustainable feed based on local materials that were previously not optimally utilized. The series of community service activities that have been carried out have increased farmers' knowledge regarding the use of coffee husk waste as an alternative feed material and produced alternative feed based on coffee husk waste.

Abstract

Flood disasters, as one of the major impacts of climate change, often exert significant pressure on rice-farming communities, particularly in sustaining production and ensuring food security. Strengthening the resilience of farmer groups in flood-prone areas requires targeted learning processes and well-structured social organization. These two aspects are essential in enhancing resilience through: a) The selection of rice varieties adaptive to climate change and b) The utilization of social institutions to address flood challenges. The Dosen Pulang Kampung (Dospulkam) program of IPB University was implemented in Ciuyah Village, Cirebon regency, to facilitate resilience improvement among rice farmer groups through an integrated training program. The training encompassed the selection of rice varieties and the enhancement of farmer group capacity in managing irrigation resources. The integrated training was conducted from 7‒9 July 2025. The method was conducted through focus group discussions (FGDs), small group discussions, lectures, field surveys, and the distribution of stimulus assistance in the form of IPB 9G seeds, IPB 13S seeds, and IPB 9G rice. Training participants were organized at two levels: group and village. At the community level, 23 community participants represented eight groups from the village; meanwhile, decision-makers, including the village government, the Combined Farmers Group, and village extension workers, were also involved. The results indicated that farmer groups developed a strong understanding of the use of IPB 9G as a climate-smart variety and optimized collective action through social institutions to address irrigation channel constraints. This program has contributed to enhancing the adaptive capacity of rice farmer groups to flood disasters caused by climate change.

Abstract

Meureubo is one of four sub-districts in West Aceh Regency that borders directly on the sea. Fishermen in the Lhok Meureubo area are traditional fishermen with fishing vessels measuring under 5 GT and operational areas under 2 nautical miles. Currently, fishermen use gillnets and handlines to catch reef fish. However, this fishing gear is considered insufficient because it requires a lot of time and energy. Bottom traps are optimal fishing gear for catching fish at the bottom of the waters, such as reef fish, and their use also does not require a lot of time and energy, and the tools and materials used are based on local resources that are environmentally friendly for the marine waters of West Aceh Regency. The purpose of this community service is to provide education and understanding for fishermen about the manufacture and use of bottom traps. The number of participants was 40 people who are traditional fishermen of Lhok Meureubo. The implementation method was socialization regarding the use and advantages of bottom traps and provided a workshop on making and assembling bottom traps. The results of this community service program were an 80% increase in fishermen's understanding and knowledge of bottom trap use and an 85% increase in skills in assembling and manufacturing the bottom trap technology. A total of 11 bottom traps were successfully manufactured, which will be operated directly by traditional fishermen from Lhok Meureubo in the waters of West Aceh Regency.

Abstract

Rice is a major food commodity in Indonesia, including in Pangumbahan Village, Ciracap subdistrict, Sukabumi Regency, which has great potential for rice cultivation due to its favorable climate. However, the main challenges faced are climate change and the availability of water resources. This program aims to sustainably increase rice farming productivity through the dissemination of climate-friendly agricultural technology and water resources. The program is implemented in Pangumbahan Village in collaboration between IPB team and the Ciburial Berkah Farmers Group. The methods used include field observations, mapping of potentials and problems, and the implementation of technology dissemination programs. One of the technologies introduced is the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) to monitor weather conditions in real-time, helping farmers make better decisions. The program results show that the use of AWS can enhance knowledge in agricultural irrigation planning and community welfare. The collected weather data indicates a surplus of rainwater that can be utilized for irrigation. Combined with existing water sources such as springs and wells, as well as planned irrigation from rivers, farmers will be better prepared to face the challenges of climate change and support the sustainability of rice farming in Pangumbahan Village.

Abstract

This Community Service Activity (PKM) aims to enhance the understanding and skills of farmers regarding the importance of feed supplements in meeting the nutritional needs of ruminant livestock. The activity was conducted at the Sidomulyo IX Farmers Group, Labuhan Ratu IX Village, Labuhan Ratu District, East Lampung Regency. The supplement introduced is in the form of a Herbal Mineral Block (HMB), which is a mineral- and herbal-based feed additive to support the health and productivity of ruminant livestock. The main issue for the partners is the still low level of knowledge among farmers regarding the importance of meeting the mineral needs of livestock. Activities were carried out through socialization, discussions, and training in HMB production so that farmers could understand and apply it independently. The evaluation of the activity shows that out of the total 15 participants who attended the training, most were able to understand and apply the HMB production techniques. The pretest results indicated that before the activity, 80% of the participants were in the category of not understanding and having little understanding of the importance of livestock nutrition fulfillment, the benefits of HMB, and its production techniques. After the activity was conducted, the posttest results showed a significant improvement, with 93.3% of the participants falling into the category of understanding and very understanding. Additionally, the participant satisfaction evaluation shows that all participants (100%) found the activity very beneficial; 86.67% of participants stated that the material presented was very clear; 80% of participants were interested in producing HMB independently; and 93.3% of participants were very satisfied with the implementation of the activity. Some participants also suggested ideas to modify the HMB formulation according to the needs of livestock in their respective areas. The results of this activity show that the extension and demonstration of HMB production are effective in increasing the knowledge, skills, and interest of farmers in utilizing herbal and mineral-based feed supplements as an effort to support the sustainable productivity of ruminant livestock.

Abstract

Benteng Gajah Village, Tompobulu District, Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, lacks a household waste management system. The majority of residents work as farmers, livestock breeders, and furniture craftsmen, resulting in high organic waste production. This situation exacerbates issues at the final processing site (TPA), as organic waste is the largest emitter of methane gas during landfill processes. Methane has a global warming potential (GWP) up to 34 times greater than CO2. This community service program aimed to establish Rumah Olah as a circular economy-based organic waste processing center integrated with the Olah.ind application to enhance the economic value of organic waste. The program employed participatory rural appraisal (PRA) and andragogical approaches through observation, interviews, focus group discussions (FGD), demonstration and hands-on practice. The program includes preparatory phases, application development, and empowerment through organic waste processing via maggot farming, organic fertilizer production, aquaponics, and the use of the Olah.ind application. The results showed that Rumah Olah was successfully as a community-based organic waste processing center integrated with the Olah.ind application. The system enables residents to sort and deposit organic waste, which is subsequently processed into value-added products, including maggot, compost, aquaponic vegetables, and fish. Pre-test and post-test evaluations demonstrated that participants’ knowledge of organic waste management and the use of the Olah.ind application increased from an average score of 28% in pre-test to 92% in post-test. Overall, the Rumah Olah has fostered an inclusive and sustainable community empowerment ecosystem for circular organic waste management and the production of economically valuable products.
