Abstract

Science education is essential to the high school level learning curriculum, particularly Biology Lessons. Every student's learning must develop critical, analytical, innovative, and creative thinking skills by implementing both theoretical and practical approaches. In Biology Education subject, there is learning about bioprocess that involves the use of microbes (bacteria). Community service activities are conducted to illustrate the application of bioprocess technology in the fermentation of milk into probiotic yoghurt drinks and to serve as learning materials that enrich students’ knowledge of the fermentation process. Diversification of milk sources and methods using wet and dry lactic acid bacteria is introduced to students to enhance their knowledge and enrich learning materials related to biological technology innovation concepts. Community service activities are carried out in the form of pre-tests, material presentations, practices, organoleptic tests, post-tests, and filling out questionnaires on the level of student understanding and satisfaction. From the results of the post-test, an increase in the level of student understanding of making yoghurt was obtained by 87%. The results of the organoleptic test showed that all yoghurt products prepared met the SNI 2981: 2009 quality standards for the yoghurt condition test criteria, including texture, odour, taste, and consistency, except for yoghurt from almond milk. The preference level of students for yoghurt reached 96% for yoghurt made from cow's milk with strawberry flavour. This activity positively affects students by enhancing their science skills and knowledge while offering an opportunity to integrate yoghurt product innovation into school entrepreneurship. And so, this program is expected to become the basis for developing biotechnology learning in schools and improving community nutrition.

Abstract

This community service program was implemented in collaboration with the Panderman Forest Farmer Group (KTH Panderman) in Batu City, East Java, Indonesia. The program aimed to enhance the knowledge and technical skills of farmer group members in processing citronella grass into essential oil through the application of an innovative hydrodistillation process. The participants consisted of 20 members of KTH Panderman who had prior experience in the cultivation and conventional processing of citronella grass. The program employed a participatory approach involving problem identification, counseling, training, mentoring, and the application of technology in post-harvest handling and extraction processes. The implemented innovations included the selection of raw materials based on harvest age, the use of leaves as the primary extraction material, a wilting process prior to extraction, and improvements to the oil separation system. The hydrodistillation process was conducted using water as the extraction medium without the addition of organic solvents, at an operating temperature of approximately 95–100°C. The results demonstrated improvements in both production capacity and processing efficiency. Extraction time was reduced from 3 hours to 2 hours, raw material processing capacity increased from 20 kg to 30 kg per batch, and the volume of essential oil produced increased from an average of 40–45 mL to 80–100 mL per batch. These improvements were achieved through enhanced raw material handling practices and optimization of the oil separation process during extraction. Overall, the program successfully improved the technical capacity of farmer group members and increased the productivity of citronella essential oil production.

Abstract

The Barona Farmers Group in Seunebok Village, Pidie, is one of the farmers' groups that regularly produces rice in Aceh Tamiang Regency. The main problem frequently encountered by the farmer group is a moderate pest attack that affects almost 50% of the group's land area before entering the vegetative phase. This type of pest is the false whitefly (Cnaphalocrosis medinalis), which is characterized by the presence of caterpillars on the leaves. Therefore, farmers use chemical control methods, which impact the quality of rice yields. Farmers are also still unable to implement pest management using botanical pesticides due to a lack of knowledge in their manufacturing practices. The goal of PKM is to provide sustainable empowerment to farmers by providing training in the manufacture of botanical pesticides by utilizing local potential. These local potentials are papaya and soursop leaves. The method used is participatory, involving the community in direct practice in making botanical pesticides. This activity was held at the Seunebok Village Hall in Pidie with 20 participants. The results of the activity showed an increase in the community's ability to combine the use of natural ingredients, namely papaya and soursop leaves, for botanical pesticides. The results showed an increase in farmers' knowledge regarding rice pests from 65 to 80%, material selection from 33 to 87%, processing methods from 25 to 95%, and application techniques from 10% to 82%. These improvements demonstrate the effectiveness of practice-based training in improving farmers' skills.

Abstract

The partner’s main problem in this community service program was the suboptimal utilization of young coconuts in Cupel Village, Negara District, Jembrana Regency, despite their abundant availability and high economic potential. The priority problems faced by the PKK women’s group included limited knowledge of young coconut processing, production skills, the use of simple equipment, packaging techniques, and digital marketing. This community service program aimed to improve the capacity of coastal communities to process young coconuts into Jelly Coco, a value-added product with potential as an alternative source of income. The program was implemented using a participatory approach based on Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), which included needs identification through surveys and interviews, workshops, hands-on Jelly Coco production practice, Instagram-based marketing assistance, and evaluation through pre-test and post-test assessments. The activity involved 35 participants consisting of PKK members and representatives of the local community. The evaluation results showed an increase in the average achievement of participants’ knowledge and skills indicators from 72.65% in the pre-test to 95.57% in the post-test. Participants were also able to understand the functions of production equipment, the stages of Jelly Coco production, packaging techniques, and demonstrated strong interest in developing household-scale businesses based on young coconuts. Abstract

Household organic waste remains a serious problem in Indonesia, particularly in urban areas that produce large amounts of waste. The inadequate utilization of kitchen waste, such as vegetable scraps and fruit peels, leads to environmental pollution and potential health problems. Independent waste processing into liquid organic fertilizer is an environmentally friendly solution that is effective and applicable using fermentation solutions. This program aims to educate and foster knowledge and skills in making liquid organic fertilizer from kitchen waste. This community service activity was carried out in Dukuh Lemusir, Pabelan Village, Kartasura Regency, targeting 19 women from the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) as the main partners (divided into 5 groups). The implementation included preparation, outreach, training, monitoring, and evaluation. Evaluation through questionnaires measured knowledge and skills analyzed using quantitative descriptive methods. The training focused on hands-on practice in making liquid organic fertilizer, conducted in groups with intensive guidance. The fermentation results were observed for approximately 30 days and indicated a successful process with characteristics such as brown color, a distinctive fruity aroma, an acidic pH, and no mold. The evaluation results showed an average achievement of 93.68%, categorized as very good. Contributing to reducing waste and environmental pollution, the use of liquid organic fertilizer also supports organic farming and reduces dependence on chemicals. This education and training is expected to encourage the sustainability of environmentally friendly waste management practices in the community and strengthen the government's integrated waste management program.

Abstract

Church buildings function not only as places of worship but also as sacramental centers that support the spiritual life of their congregations. The church landscape also shapes the spiritual and social experiences of the congregation by serving as a transitional space before and after worship activities. In the context of rural churches, landscape planning often remains unable to optimally support sacred functions, social needs, and outdoor spatial comfort. This community service activity aimed to plan the landscape of Bet’El Church in Fatuat Village as a response to the partner’s problems, particularly the need for a functional worship space that reflects religious values and aligns with local values. The methods included field surveys, spatial needs analysis based on congregational activities, and participatory planning involving the community, village government, traditional elders, and the church development committee. The outputs of this activity consisted of technical drawing documents, a landscape zoning plan, and a cost budget plan. The resulting landscape planning included circulation arrangement, social spaces, reflective spaces, transitional spaces, gate design, and drainage planning. This community service program not only produced a physical site plan but also improved community understanding of the importance of landscape planning as part of the worship experience, local identity strengthening, and the sustainability of church space.

Abstract

The accumulation of shellfish waste in Segorotambak Village due to increased seafood processing activities causes environmental problems such as bad odors, dirty environments, and polluting the coastal environment. The lack of education and understanding of the people of Segorotambak Village about processed shellshell waste products has resulted in a higher accumulation of shellfish waste. To overcome this problem, socialization and training in the manufacture of organic solid fertilizer from shellfish waste, organic waste, rice husk ash, and black soldier fly larvae (BSF) assistance as decomposition agents are important to be implemented. The implementation method includes coordination and surveys with village officials, socialization and training in making organic solid fertilizers, as well as evaluation of the effectiveness of socialization and training activities. The results of the evaluation from pre-test, post-test, and participatory observation showed that socialization and training activities succeeded in increasing the understanding of the Segorotambak village community to 94%. Cheap, easy to obtain, and simple methods cause this innovation to be easy to follow and apply by the people of Segorotambak Village. The socialization and training program for organic solid fertilizer innovation from shellfish waste not only plays a role in reducing the accumulation of organic waste, but also supports increasing soil fertility, strengthening community environmental awareness, and creating new economic opportunities.

Abstract

Ciawi, Bogor, represents a region with high potential in the agricultural sector, particularly dairy farming, where approximately 20% of local farmers are engaged in milk production. This condition provides opportunities for developing home industries that transform cow’s milk into value-added products. In response, Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), as a leading educational and research institution in Indonesia, has collaborated with PT. Bogor Sari Nutrisi (a local MSME/ Micro, Small and Medium Entreprises) and CV. Wahyu Farm Sejahtera (a dairy farm) to establish a program aimed at producing mozzarella cheese and soft candy from locally sourced cow’s milk. The project was implemented through a comprehensive situational analysis of local challenges and opportunities, dissemination of university-based innovations to industry, and collaborative partnerships with local enterprises. The initiative has resulted in improvements in production capacity and product quality, positioning mozzarella cheese and soft candy as potential regional specialty products. These findings demonstrate that innovation in milk processing can enhance the added value of local agricultural commodities, expand market opportunities, and contribute positively to regional economic development.
