Abstract

Good Aquaculture Practices (GAqP) represent a controlled aquaculture management system designed to ensure food safety, product quality, and environmental sustainability. The dissemination of GAqP principles to aquaculture farmers can be achieved through technical training and intensive mentoring programs. In this context, the Aquaculture Study Program of Jembrana Marine and Fisheries Polytechnic implemented a Community Service Program aimed at promoting the adoption of GAqP and enhancing the knowledge and technical capacity of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) farmer groups in Pengambengan Village, Bali. The program focused on strengthening community-based shrimp farming enterprises through the application of environmentally friendly technologies, efficient resource utilization, and strategies to improve both the quality and quantity of production. Through technical training and intensive assistance, participants acquired knowledge and practical skills related to optimal pond management, shrimp health monitoring, feed management, and the implementation of operational standards in accordance with GAqP requirements. The extension and mentoring activities carried out under the community service program were effective in improving participants’ understanding of GAqP implementation in Pacific white shrimp farming. This improvement was demonstrated by a significant increase in the average test score, from 56 ± 6.9 in the pre-test to 96 ± 6.9 in the post-test. The implementation of GAqP through continuous mentoring activities under the Community Service Program from 2019 to 2024 contributed to the development of more productive and sustainable Pacific white shrimp farming enterprises among the assisted community groups in Pengambengan Village. Furthermore, the program generated positive economic outcomes by enhancing the income of participating farmers.

Abstract

This community engagement program aimed to enhance the capacity of the Sangalang Hapakat Farmers Group in cultivating oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) by utilizing rice husk as an alternative substrate to sawdust. The activities included technical training, field practice, and the supervised production of baglogs using four media formulations. Rice husk was selected due to its local abundance in Pulang Pisau’s food estate area and its high fiber content which supports mycelium growth. Results indicated that formulas with higher rice husk content (K2 and K4) accelerated mycelium colonization (25 days), pinhead formation (30–35 days), and fruit body regeneration (5–8 days). While fresh weight per baglog (1–3 ounces) showed no significant difference, mushrooms appeared whiter. Five out of nine farmers committed to continuing mushroom production using rice husk media. This innovation promotes cost efficiency, agricultural waste reduction, and production sustainability, aligning with SDGs 1, 2, 8, and 12. The program successfully transferred appropriate technology, improved farmers' skills, and presents potential for wider replication.

Abstract

Private forest farmers in Karyasari Village typically sell standing trees using a "borongan" system without knowing the actual stand volume, while buyers rely on visual estimation methods. This situation is attributed to the lack of a standardized reference for estimating timber volume in private forests. This community service program aimed to transform the farmers' paradigm regarding timber selling systems towards measurable volume-based estimation through technical training on forest inventory. The program involved 30 members of the Kelompok Wanita Tani Sipon Harum Lestari and Kelompok Tani Harapan Maju in Karyasari Village, Bogor Regency. The training employed an andragogical approach, encompassing material dissemination, demonstrations of simple measurement tools, field practice, and training evaluation. The effectiveness of the training was assessed using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. Paired t-test analysis revealed a significant increase in knowledge regarding tree dimension measurement (p=0.0001) and volume estimation (p=0.0037). These findings indicate that the training on forest inventory techniques successfully enhanced the farmers' capacity to measure tree dimensions and estimate timber volume. This knowledge is highly valuable as a benchmark for establishing an independent and sustainable private forest timber selling system.

Abstract

The Pratama 3 Taro cultivation optimization program was implemented through a demonstration plot (demplot) approach as a technology-transfer method to increase farmers' capacity in Situ Gede Village, Bogor City. This activity involved 16 farmers from the Saluyu Adult Farmers Group (KTD) and the Geulis Women Farmers Group (KWT) as partners. The implementation method consisted of three main stages, namely land preparation and cultivation demonstration plots, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) training, and periodic mentoring and monitoring. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and surveys using questionnaires, then analyzed descriptively and quantitatively. The results of the demonstration plot implementation showed an increase in vegetative growth of taro plants up to the 14th WAP phase with an average tuber weight of 1,335 g and productivity reaching 26.7 tons per hectare. Regarding changes in farmer capacity, 93.75% of participants reported increased knowledge, 62.5% reported changes in cultivation techniques, and 68.75% reported increased harvest yields of ≥30%. In addition, product prices increased, and market access improved after the program intervention. These findings indicate that demonstration plots as a participatory learning medium are effective in encouraging technology adoption and increasing the productivity of Talas Pratama 3. This program has the potential to be implemented more widely with further support for post-harvest and marketing aspects to enhance farmers' economic sustainability.

Abstract

Rice related issues in Indonesia are characterized by seasonal shortages and price fluctuations influenced by extreme weather conditions, shrinking agricultural land, distribution constraints, and the ongoing dilemma between import policies and rice self sufficiency, despite the frequent occurrence of national rice stock surpluses. These conditions directly affect farmers’ welfare, consumer affordability, and national food security. Mekarjaya Village, located in Warungkiara District, Sukabumi Regency, is an agrarian area that has experienced a decline in the number of active farmers due to high production costs, limited capital, and low farming profitability. At the same time, local rice production remains insufficient to meet community demand, resulting in continued dependence on rice supplies from outside the village. This community service program aimed to introduce the Salibu rice cultivation method as an alternative farming technology that offers greater production efficiency and the potential to increase land productivity. The program was implemented through several stages, including preparation and coordination, community outreach, participatory training, as well as monitoring and evaluation. Program effectiveness was assessed using pre-test and post-test instruments to measure changes in participant’s knowledge and understanding. The results indicated a significant improvement in farmer’s conceptual and technical understanding of the Salibu cultivation method. However, the level of technology adoption remained low, and the initial field implementation conducted by one farmer encountered difficulties due to improper irrigation management. These findings suggest that successful knowledge transfer alone is insufficient to ensure technology adoption and must be supported by continuous technical assistance during the implementation phase. Therefore, future programs should focus on strengthening field-based mentoring and establishing demonstration plots to promote the sustainable adoption of Salibu technology among farmers.
