Abstract

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem caused by cumulative and continuous malnutrition resulting in children being too short for their age. The percentage of stunted under-five children in 2021 in East Java province was 23.5%. Meanwhile, in Mojokerto District, the stunting prevalence was 27.4%, above the stunting prevalence in East Java province. The local government agency at a regency/municipality level up to a village level plays a role as a policy creator and an implementor; they need to know well about various matters related to stunting to achieve the goal, which is decreasing the stunting rate. This activity aimed to improve the stakeholders’ knowledge as the policymakers on stunting and its preventive efforts. The method used in this study was a cross-sectional method using a quantitative survey. The activity consisted of three stages: first, distributing pre-test questionnaires related to materials that would be given; second, conducting education to the stakeholders by three speakers and was followed by a discussion; third, distributing post-test questionnaires to measure the respondents’ understandings of the education that had been given. The findings of this study indicated that there was a significant difference in the average knowledge of stunting dan the preventive efforts before and after conducting education to the stakeholders (P=0.00). This result showed that there was a positive effect on giving education to improve the stakeholders’ knowledge of stunting as an acceleration effort to the Desa EMAS (Eliminasi Stunting) in Mojokerto District. Abstract

Indonesia has the highest number of stunted children in Southeast Asia. Indonesia's stunting prevalence rate is also still higher than the threshold set by WHO (20%). This issue has become a particular concern of the government. Hence, by 2024, the government targets the prevalence of stunting to decrease to 14% under Presidential Regulation no. 72 of 2021. One of the highest stunting cases in Indonesia is Bangkalan Regency, which has a prevalence rate of 38.9%, exceeding the maximum stunting target limit in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aimed to map the area in Bangkalan Regency based on the factors that influence stunting cases in toddlers. This study used data from the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) survey in 2021. The results show that several sub-districts in Bangkalan still have poor water availability, sanitation, environmental hygiene, and housing welfare. Mapping the area can help the government provide the right solution for the area's problems.

Abstract

Capacity strengthening and interpersonal communication are important in social behavior change communication and would support accelerating the reduction of stunting in Indonesia. Participating actively in learning during the training model can increase capacity among the family support team and the community health workers as peer counselors. The study evaluated the changed behavior training model for nutrition knowledge and counseling skill among peer counselors. The nutrition training using active participation learning was conducted through participants' small discussions on complementary feeding problems and counseling practice. The total participation is 125 from family support teams and community health workers. The study used a mixed methodology with cross-sectional study and open interviews to explore perceived participant training on child feeding problem and couseling skills. A pre-post evaluation of nutrition knowledge showed a significant improvement score (p<0.005). At the end of the training, participants' nutrition knowledge score increased to 17 points, and the proportion of the high category of nutrition knowledge improved from 0.4% to 13.5% (p<0.005). The change behavior training model can increase counseling skills and identify barrier factors of breastfeeding and complementary feeding among peer counselors.
