Abstract

The present study is a pragmatic analysis of the use of hedges and boosters in the speeches of three ministers on the government’s policy of raising fuel prices during the second tenure administration of Susilo Bamband Yudhoyono (SBY). This study explores the distributions of hedges and boosters in the speeches and the pragmatic functions of those hedges and boosters. Data were obtained from three speeches delivered by Hatta Radjasa (HR), Jero Wacik (JW) and Armida Alisjahbana (AA). The theoretical framework of this study was based on Hyland’s (1998a) and Hyland’s (1998b) theories of hedging for categorizing the types of hedges and boosters and pragmatic functions. This study indicates that both hedges and boosters were used by two politicians: HR and AA with different distributions. This study confirms Hyland’s (1998a) and (1998b) findings that hedges and boosters are used for mitigating and strengthening the truth values of propositions.

Abstract

Writing is difficult. Having a limited understanding on what to write or the fear of getting grammar or spelling errors is often a major problem for students when they are instructed to write something, be it an essay or an article.  Such difficulties are respective for Sundanese language classes in West Java. The study reported in this paper aims to investigate a number of fundamental problems of writing in Sundanese classes at a Junior High School. The study seeks to address the problems in the area of teaching writing in Sundanese classes by providing a comprehensive picture of the practice of a writing workshop model in the selected class. The study is classroom action research taking place in a public Junior High School in West Java, specifically in a Sundanese language class. The participants of the study were 36 students of 9th grade (comprising 14 male students and 22 female students) in 2018-2019 academic years. There were 3 cycles involved in this action research implemented throughout a semester. The study revealed that the use of the writing workshop model in teaching writing in Sundanese could improve the students’ writing skills. The writing workshop model, which focused on personal analysis and peer-feedback in the essay writing process, facilitated 9th grade students in producing, evaluating, and presenting essays within their respective groups. A supportive social environment in groups allowed for students’ enjoyment in writing. This environment thus led students to be exposed to varied topics and linguistic expressions in multi-social contexts. This study suggests that there are potential benefits from implementing the writing workshop model in the practice of teaching writing. Therefore, language teachers are suggested that they should apply this model in their teaching of writing. Through this model, students will be more engaged in their writing classes and learn writing in more meaningful, fun, creative, and dialogic ways.

Abstract

This study examines the poems of Boris Pasternak, the famed Russian literary figure. It analyzes and compares the poet's works with those of his contemporaries and predecessors’. Some motifs, themes, images, and characteristic features of the stylistics and tropics of poetic creativity in Pasternak's lyrics were revealed, which signify the influence of traditions and innovation. By employing several literary criticism methods, namely those of close reading, a structuralist analysis, and biographical criticism, this study found that there is a wealth of themes both old and new in Pasternak’s poetry. These themes were mostly derived from past authors, which confirm the findings of Baróthy (2015), Han (2015), and Polivanova & Polivanov (2018). These themes were then reconstructed in Pasternak’s works in a way that signify these works as a celebration of the old and the welcoming of the new in the Russian literary tradition. This study has cemented Boris Pasternak’s role as a hub linking the old and the new generations in Russian literature.

Abstract

The pandemic changed the course of our schools. All traditional face-to-face classes were converted into online classes. This complicates excellent educational planning for practice-based courses, as these courses rely on laboratory facilities to enhance students' abilities. Therefore, social service to 24 elementary school teachers is important through the utilization of online platforms, especially Google Meet. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to learn about the process of teaching the use of Google Meet during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as to assess the instructors' opinions on the training and use of this platform. The authors used a qualitative paradigm to describe the learning method and determine instructors' opinions on training using field observations and surveys. Based on documented field observations, course presenters use Google Meet for content discussion. According to this survey, 73.62 percent of the respondents preferred the online learning mode due to the lack of problems encountered. Interestingly, the questionnaire findings revealed 81.95 percent favorable perception of the use of various platforms during the session. This has the potential to be a significant improvement for online courses across all contexts.

Abstract

This study entitled “An analysis of code-switching used by the models and judges in Indonesia’s Next Top Model Cycle 2” aims to analyze the types and factors of code-switching that were found in the TV show. This study used a descriptive qualitative method in which the data were obtained from the video downloaded from YouTube. The data were in the form of utterances of all the models and judges in the TV show. Drawing on Appel and Muysken’s (2006) types of code switching and Hoffman’s (1991) factors contributing to code switching, the results of the study revealed that there were 167 types and 172 factors of code-switching in Indonesia’s Next Top Model Cycle 2: 13.17% (22) inter-sentential switching, 78.44% (131) intra-sentential switching, 6.59% (11) tag-switching, and 1.80% (3) inter-sentential switching in Bahasa Indonesia-Javanese. Meanwhile, the factors that found were talking about particular topic, being emphatic about something, interjection, repetition, intention to clarify, and expressing group identity. The most dominant factors were talking about particular topic 64.53% or 111 data and followed by intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutors 14.53% or 25 data. The findings of the study indicated that intra-sentential switching was used dominantly to assure the audience of the show, which is mostly Indonesians, can understand entirely the conversation. Additionally, the subjects used code-switching to talk about particular topic, mostly for fashion terminologies, as it is intended to create an exclusivity for the people who belong to the same group, which is fashion enthusiasts.

Abstract

Teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in Indonesia has its own complexity due to the multilingual situation and the broadly different levels of English proficiency.  To cope with this particular challenge, some Indonesian teachers tend to use a translanguaging method in teaching their students so that their classes are more interactive and engaging. In this case, translanguaging is a form of multilingual practice in the context of multilingual education where students are given equal rights to develop their language potential. Realizing the complexity of the learning process in a multilingual context, we aimed to reveal the types and purposes of Translanguaging in the learning process. This study used a qualitative method and data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analyses. This study shows that there were three types of translanguaging used by teachers during their teaching. The types of translanguaging are intra-sentential translanguaging, intersentential translanguaging, and tag translanguaging, with four purposes inform of strategies that are related to each other. It was also found that translanguaging is useful in the EFL learning processes because it can be used as a method to explain learning materials in a more convenient way to enhance students’ understanding.

Abstract

This case study explored the unlikely phenomenon of the use of humor in academic lectures. The previous studies in this area have shown that, though traditionally unlikely, humor is commonly used as a linguistic strategy in academic discourse. Therefore, this case study aims to contribute to the literature of Indonesian academic discourse by examining the creation and functions of humor in Indonesian academic lectures. Through the descriptive qualitative method, this study analyzed five classroom lectures of English Literature major in Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. After the lectures were transcribed according to Jefferson’s (2004) transcription convention, the question of the creation of humor was answered based on Grice’s (1975) conversational maxim theory. This analysis discovered that there was a slight inclination to create humor by flouting the Maxim of Quality in the data, which implies that the lecturers tend to rely on untruthfulness to create jokes. Afterward, the function is analyzed based on Nesi’s (2012) theory of functions of humor in academic contexts, and it was found that the lecturers mostly used humor to build rapport with the students. Keywords: Academic context, Conversational maxims, Cooperative principles, Humor, Functions of humor, Pragmatics

Abstract

Parenting styles can be influenced by a number of sociocultural factors, one of which is generation gap. This study analyses the kinds of parenting styles evident in the film 20th Century Women (2016). The study specifically focuses on the main character Dorothea’s ways of raising her son Jamie, who is forty years apart in age. The analysis points to three different parenting styles adopted by Dorothea: (1) authoritative, (2) authoritarian, and (3) permissive. The study confirms that generation gap has influenced the kinds of parenting styles adopted by the character. This study has thus shed light on an important sociocultural as well as contextual factor influencing parenting style.

Abstract

This qualitative study analysed the use of code-switching and code-mixing in makeup advertisements from four brands of PT Paragon Technology and Innovation (Emina, MakeOver, InstaPerfect, and Wardah) on Instagram, employing Barthes' (1988). Semiotic method  was used to explore denotative and connotative meanings in the ads. Denotation refers to the literal meaning of signs, while connotation reveals additional meanings influenced by culture and ideology. The findings indicate that code-switching and code-mixing are used to capture audience attention and create a modern brand image. For instance, MakeOver advertisements use English language to convey an international impression, whereas Emina employs code-mixing to make messages more dynamic and relevant to bilingual audiences. Practical implications of this research include assisting companies in developing effective marketing strategies and crafting engaging and grammatically appropriate ad content. Moreover, the study is expected to enhance consumer critical thinking towards advertisements and aid policymakers in establishing language usage guidelines in advertising. Overall, this research demonstrates that makeup advertisements not only promote products but also shape consumer identities and self-images, reflecting global trends and socio-cultural dynamics.
