Abstract

Children's identity within Indigenous communities is constructed not only through family relationships but also through social recognition and community acceptance. This study aims to examine how the Porayamata practice reconstructs the identity of ana ngkadoe within the Pamona Indigenous community and to explore its implications for social justice counseling. The study employed a qualitative approach with a critical ethnographic design, utilizing in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that ana ngkadoe experience limited recognition within the kinship system, which affects their social standing. Through the involvement of families, the Dewan Adat, customary symbols, and community recognition, Porayamata reconstructs children's identities as legitimate members of both the family and the broader community. These findings suggest that identity restoration requires institutionalized social recognition embedded in cultural practices, thereby extending the perspective of social justice counseling, which has traditionally focused primarily on individual-level change.

Abstract

Abstract The mobilization of information, technology, and social change marked by the presence of cyberspace not only affects the way people think in building relationships with others and themselves but also the process of developing faith and spirituality. Using the methods of qualitative research, literature study, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD), this research finds that in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, Christian religious patterns are changing drastically, driving all churches to move to virtual reality. The Christian notion of spirituality is also being transformed so that the experience with God is believed to occur not only in the physical space of the church but also in virtual reality. “Clickactivism” forms a new faith community determined by click and spiritual experiences which strength lies in the imagination of communities and individuals. This study concludes that cybertheology is an important contribution in helping Indonesian Christians to have a strong spiritualityabout God who cannot be confined within time and space.

Abstract

This article examines the enduring colonial legacy within Christian education in the Batak region, which has systematically marginalized indigenous knowledge and privileged Western pedagogical paradigms as the normative expression of Christianity. Focusing on the Sunday School ministry of the Huria Kristen Indonesia (HKI) church, the study initiates a critical inquiry into curriculum transformation through the lens of decolonial theory. Employing an interdisciplinary methodology that integrates the sociology of education, sociology of religion, and decolonial studies, qualitative data were gathered through in-depth interviews with two pastoral practitioners and contextual observations. The Batak philosophy of Sala Mandasor Sega Luhutan (SMSL) serves as a critical framework to deconstruct entrenched Eurocentric curricula and reconstruct pedagogical practices that center indigenous epistemology. Findings reveal that despite HKI’s historical resistance to missionary hegemony, its Sunday School curriculum remains dominated by hierarchical, banking-model pedagogy that treats children as passive recipients. Indigenous cultural elements are largely confined to ceremonial performances rather than substantive instructional integration, perpetuating epistemic alienation and dehumanization. The study argues that authentic decolonization requires pastors and educators to transition toward dialogical, problem-posing methodologies that recognize Sunday School children as active epistemic subjects bearing the imago Dei. By embedding Batak kinship values, oral traditions, and symbolic frameworks into core biblical instruction, Christian education can become a liberating practice that honors cultural heritage while fostering theological contextualization. This research offers a strategic pathway for ecclesiastical curriculum reform ahead of HKI’s centenary in 2027.

Abstract

This article examines mutual relationships in the historical teachings of Christianity and Islam. Drawing on John B. Cobb, Jr’s  mutual transformation theory, the article argues that early Christians and Muslims scholars have learned from other traditions in developing their religious teachings. I employ historical writings on the key figures and the early scholars of both religions. Based on documentary research, this article illustrates the mutual contact with other religious communities in the history of Christianity and Islam. Both Christian and Muslim Classical philosophers touch upon classical Greek Philosophers to develop intelectual traditons and teachings. As a result of the encounter, mutual transformation invites people to be involved in a deep dialogue and to be openhearted to learn, from the teachings of other religious traditions.
