Abstract

This article examines the enduring colonial legacy within Christian education in the Batak region, which has systematically marginalized indigenous knowledge and privileged Western pedagogical paradigms as the normative expression of Christianity. Focusing on the Sunday School ministry of the Huria Kristen Indonesia (HKI) church, the study initiates a critical inquiry into curriculum transformation through the lens of decolonial theory. Employing an interdisciplinary methodology that integrates the sociology of education, sociology of religion, and decolonial studies, qualitative data were gathered through in-depth interviews with two pastoral practitioners and contextual observations. The Batak philosophy of Sala Mandasor Sega Luhutan (SMSL) serves as a critical framework to deconstruct entrenched Eurocentric curricula and reconstruct pedagogical practices that center indigenous epistemology. Findings reveal that despite HKI’s historical resistance to missionary hegemony, its Sunday School curriculum remains dominated by hierarchical, banking-model pedagogy that treats children as passive recipients. Indigenous cultural elements are largely confined to ceremonial performances rather than substantive instructional integration, perpetuating epistemic alienation and dehumanization. The study argues that authentic decolonization requires pastors and educators to transition toward dialogical, problem-posing methodologies that recognize Sunday School children as active epistemic subjects bearing the imago Dei. By embedding Batak kinship values, oral traditions, and symbolic frameworks into core biblical instruction, Christian education can become a liberating practice that honors cultural heritage while fostering theological contextualization. This research offers a strategic pathway for ecclesiastical curriculum reform ahead of HKI’s centenary in 2027.

Abstract

Interreligious dialogue has become an urgent necessity in plural societies because social peace cannot be sustained through formal tolerance alone, but must also be grounded in shared everyday practices rooted in local culture. This study aims to analyse the relevance and implementation of Paul F. Knitter’s thought in the socio-religious life of the people of Fakfak. This research employs a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach to understand the meanings, social practices, and value systems that support interreligious dialogue in Fakfak Regency, Indonesia. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving religious leaders and customary leaders selected purposively. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of attending to experience, transcribing experience, analysing experience, and reading experience, and was further strengthened by the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and verification. The findings show that interreligious dialogue in Fakfak is concretely manifested through the practices of Gereja Maghi and Mesjid Maghi, interfaith mutual cooperation in the construction of houses of worship, reciprocal participation in religious celebrations, and kinship relations across different faiths. The study also reveals that the philosophy of Satu Tungku Tiga Batu, together with the values of Idu-idu, Mani-Nina, and Jojor, serves as a socio-cultural foundation that reinforces interreligious harmony. The implication of this study is that the strengthening of interreligious harmony in Indonesia needs to be built through the integration of interfaith dialogue and local wisdom as a contextual and sustainable social praxis.

Abstract

Messianism in the Judeo-Christian tradition is closely related to the collective experience of political subjugation and socio-economic marginalization, particularly under Roman rule after the Jewish–Roman War (66–70 CE). This study analyzes Matthew 25:31–46 within this context using a postcolonial hermeneutic approach, interpreting messianism as a form of religious nationalism. The study presents two main findings. First, the figure of the “Son of Man” represents a form of religious nationalism that functions as symbolic resistance to Roman imperial authority. Second, the identification of the Messiah with “the least of my brothers” reflects religious nationalism as a form of national solidarity rooted in the lived experience of the oppressed. This study contributes to postcolonial biblical interpretation by highlighting how the text constructs collective identity and resistance within a colonized community. It also offers implications for Matthean studies by reframing the passage beyond ethical and eschatological readings toward its ideological and socio-political dimensions.

Abstract

Formal or symbolic reconciliation does not necessarily ensure the continuity of repaired relationships. Existing scholarship addresses forgiveness, intergroup contact, structural constraints, social reintegration, and everyday peace, but the mechanisms through which relational order is maintained remain distributed across these bodies of literature. This article examines how documented Jingitiu communal practices in Sabu Raijua, Indonesia, can inform this problem and develops social stabilization as a provisional analytical category. The study combines qualitative document analysis with an integrative conceptual review. Its documentary corpus comprises scholarship on reconciliation and peacebuilding together with published ethnographic, historical, and community-based documentation concerning Jingitiu belief, ritual practice, customary authority, and communal life. The comparative analysis identifies four documented features potentially relevant to relational continuity: continuing customary authority, repeated communal participation, collective memory, and a shared moral framework. These features do not demonstrate a standardized Jingitiu reconciliation procedure or causal effects on long-term peace. Instead, they provide a context-bound basis for conceptualizing how repaired relationships may be maintained through recurring institutions, practices, and systems of meaning. Social stabilization is therefore proposed as a heuristic lens rather than a confirmed chronological stage or measured outcome of reconciliation. Direct observation of disputes, interviews with the parties involved and Mone Ama members, and longitudinal research are required to examine its empirical operation and its relationship to power, exclusion, and justice.

Abstract

Sacred places are often understood primarily through their institutional ownership and formal religious functions. Less attention has been paid to how a sacred place associated with one religious tradition may acquire wider communal meaning without losing its particular religious identity. This study examines how Protestant, Muslim, and Catholic residents of Negeri Waraka interpret the Negeri Church and how collective memory, the Nazar Negeri, customary authority, and religious boundaries shape its social meaning. The study used a qualitative, focused ethnographic approach. Fieldwork was conducted in Waraka, Central Maluku, from December 2025 to January 2026 and involved 16 purposively selected participants, including customary authorities, religious leaders, village representatives, and residents from the three religious communities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, open observer-as-participant fieldwork, field notes, photographs, and relevant documents and were analyzed thematically. The findings show that the church remains a Protestant liturgical space while also functioning as a material reference point for Waraka’s collective history and communal identity. The annual Nazar Negeri connects the Raja’s house and the church through differentiated participation: Protestant residents retain liturgical authority, whereas Muslim and Catholic residents participate through customary and civic roles. The continuity of this arrangement depends on collective memory and the mediating authority of the Raja, Saniri Negeri, and religious leaders. The Waraka case demonstrates that the communal significance of a sacred place does not require the erasure of religious boundaries. Instead, shared meaning is produced through negotiated participation, customary belonging, and the continuing recognition of religious difference.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the existence of Suran in the appreciation of the people of Kahuripan hamlet, Kalirejo village, Bagelen District, Purworejo Regency, Central Java for the realization of intergenerational ecology (intergenerational eco). The research approach used is a qualitative approach with narrative-descriptive data analysis techniques. Data were collected through interviews and literature studies. Research sources came from intergenerational Kahuripan villagers who knew and experienced the Suran tradition. The theory used as an analytical knife is Anthony Giddens' structuration theory and generation theory. This study found that three layers of generations do not know the background of abstinence and Suran rituals, but they believe that Suran is an ancestral heritage that must be preserved. People consider the month of Sura as a sacred month. The sacredness of Sura makes people do "reresik" (cleaning themselves, cleaning life), fasting and abstaining from holding celebrations, abstaining from traveling far without a clear purpose, and pasa mutih. All of this is done as a practice that keeps away from seeking pleasures so that fuel, electricity, water and other natural resources are saved. Data analysis proves the importance of Suran's re-existence to realize ecology carried out by all people at the same time and continuously. The acts of abstinence in the Suran rite show the strength of the ecological movement carried out by all generations (intergenerational). In the end, this research concludes that the re-existence of Suran as a collective life of the Kahuripan hamlet community can act as an intergenerational eco-movement.

Abstract
