Abstract

Critical thinking is a careful and calculated thinking activity using complex reasoning. The purpose of this study is to describe the students' ability to think critically in solving problems based on gender. The research subjects were two second semester students of Mathematics Education Program Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika. The instruments were a mathematics problem-solving sheet and interview guidelines. Data were analyzed qualitatively by three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The results of the study found that the two subjects could bring up the five indicators of critical thinking. The male student was better in providing analytical analysis on the further explanation of the solution given, and the female student was better providing a complete, clear and detailed explanation so that it takes a longer time. However, the two students could not accurately draw conclusions and analysis. It is recommended that the lecturer provides various questions with different levels so that students are accustomed to thinking critically and they, later, as teachers also can train students' critical thinking.

Abstract

Mathematics education in Indonesia still faces challenges in developing students' Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), particularly in mathematical problem-solving ability. One of the reasons for this is the limited availability of instructional materials specifically designed to support PBL-STEM. This study aims to develop Problem-Based Learning (PBL)-based mathematics instructional materials integrated with STEM to enhance the problem-solving abilities of science-stream students. This study is a Research and Development (R&D) project using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). The subjects of this study consisted of 30 students from Grade 11 of SMAN 1 Labuhan Haji, who had low mathematical problem-solving skills. The developed materials included the Lesson Plan (RPP), Student Worksheet (LKS), problem-solving test, and practicality questionnaire for teachers. The results of validation by experts showed that the developed materials received an average score of 94.9%, which falls into the “highly valid” category. The practicality questionnaire, filled out by teachers, resulted in an average score of 92.5%, indicating that the materials are easy to use and well-structured. The effectiveness test, measured through a problem-solving test, showed an average N-Gain score of 0.72, which falls into the “high” category, indicating that the materials significantly improved students' problem-solving abilities. In conclusion, the PBL-STEM instructional materials developed in this study are valid, practical, and effective in enhancing the mathematical problem-solving ability of science-stream students.

Abstract

Training and assistance in the creation of scientific articles based on artificial intelligence (AI) aims to improve the scientific writing skills of prospective teachers at Mandalika Education University. The program involves the use of AI-based tools such as ChatGPT to correct grammar and Scite AI to help participants find relevant references quickly. A total of 25 students of the Faculty of Science, Engineering, and Applied participated in this training online. The method used in this activity involves three main stages, namely preparation, training, and mentoring. In the preparation stage, the training materials are designed to cover important topics related to scientific writing, the use of AI-based tools, and reference management using Mendeley and Zotero. The training was carried out in the form of interactive sessions, where participants were given material on the structure of scientific articles, the use of AI tools, and reference management techniques. Mentoring is carried out individually to provide more specific feedback on the articles that have been compiled by the participants. The results of the evaluation showed a significant improvement in the participants' ability to understand the structure of scientific articles using academic language, and to manage references appropriately. Despite the challenges associated with academic integrity and reliance on technology, this training provides a solid foundation for aspiring teachers to integrate technology in scientific writing and teaching.

Abstract

Abstract Although numerous studies have explored the role of fractions in the elementary school curriculum, research at the junior high school level remains limited, especially in identifying factors contributing to students' learning difficulties and developing alternative instructional approaches to address these challenges. This study aimed to examine both aspects. A hermeneutic phenomenology method was employed, with participants consisting of 29 eighth-grade students from SMPN 1 Narmada in West Lombok. The researcher acted as the primary instrument, supported by tools such as fraction operation tests and in-depth interview guidelines. The findings indicated that students’ difficulties stemmed primarily from their weak understanding of integer operations, particularly multiplication and division. To address this, a three-stage didactic design was implemented. The first stage included activities like "Let’s Guess" and "Let’s Read." The second stage incorporated "Let’s Search," "Let’s Discuss," and "Let’s Conclude." The final stage consisted of "Let’s Practice" and "Self-Reflection." These stages were designed to strengthen prerequisite knowledge through exercises on determining the least common multiple and greatest common factor. The study recommends that mathematics teachers integrate problem-based didactic strategies into fraction instruction.
