Abstract

Telepharmacy describes the use of technology in interactions between pharmacists and patients. Given that telepharmacy is the most recent development in the delivery of digital pharmacy services, the question of how prepared pharmacists are to provide high-quality services frequently comes up and receives attention. The purpose of this study was to determine the viewpoints of pharmacists in telepharmacy services. From February to April 2023, a cross-sectional survey was done using a Google form. The study population included 111 pharmacists in charge of network pharmacies in Bali Province. Their thoughts were assessed using a credible and reliable questionnaire created by the researchers. The questions were split into two sections: a professional demographic items, and a section describing the perspectives, benefits, and challenges of telepharmacy. To get a more detailed or comprehensive response, open-ended questions were added. In general, especially during a pandemic, pharmacists were aware of being involved in remote services (non-face-to-face interaction) and telepharmacy services. This study makes clear that pharmacists' involvement is essential for creating a long-distance relationship between them and their patients. Therefore, pharmacists should learn how crucial communication is to increase patient satisfaction.

Abstract

Background: Respiratory Tract Infections are among the most common health problems affecting children globally, with a particularly high prevalence in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. Inappropriate antibiotic use in treating respiratory tract infections can lead to antibiotic resistance. This study evaluates the rationality of antibiotic use in pediatric respiratory tract infections cases and assesses prescribing patterns based on established guidelines. Method: A descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted using purposive sampling. Data collected from 130 medical records of pediatric patients with respiratory tract infections (from January to March 2024) at a primary health care center in Tabanan, Bali were analyzed. The Gyssens method evaluated antibiotic rationality based on dosage, duration, and clinical indications. Data were analyzed descriptively to determine antibiotic prescribing patterns and compared with national antibiotic use guidelines. Results: The results showed that 46.1% of antibiotic use was included in the rational category (Category 0), while 43.1% were included in the use without clear indications (Category V). Amoxicillin is the most widely prescribed antibiotic (90.8%). These findings indicate a tendency to use antibiotics not by clinical guidelines. Conclusion: The use of antibiotics in pediatric patients with respiratory tract infections is mostly suboptimal. Interventions are needed to improve compliance with rational antibiotic use guidelines, including education for healthcare workers and ongoing monitoring of antibiotic prescribing patterns

Abstract

Pharyngitis is an inflammatory disease of the throat caused by viruses (70-90%) and bacteria (10-30%), and one of the diseases that is ranked third in the pattern of the 10 most common diseases in Puskesmas 2017. Appropriate therapy in pharyngitis is still lacking, where antibiotic therapy is still very high in children. This study was conducted to determine the rationality of antibiotic therapy in acute pharyngitis based on the centor score and to see the description of the suitability of the dose, indication, time of administration, frequency of administration and the presence of drug side effects. The design of this study used descriptive analysis with a cross-sectional retrospective method. Data collection was carried out by collecting samples derived from secondary data by observing pharyngitis patient medical record data at the Denpasar City Health Center in February - April 2022. The inclusion criteria of this study were complete and readable medical records in children aged 3-14 years. Results showed that giving antibiotics based on suitability for centor criteria showed that 70.22% of cases in this study were still not giving antibiotics correctly based on the score obtained. Based on the appropriateness of the use of antibiotics seen from the criteria for dosage, indication, time of administration, frequency of administration and warning of drug side effects, the results obtained were as many as (39.40%) doses that were inappropriate because the dose received was lower than the dose stated in the literature, the duration of antibiotic administration 86.36% of patients who did not use the right antibiotic, and all patients had the right frequency of using antibiotics and none experienced drug side effects. The rationality of giving antibiotics for pharyngitis is still not in accordance with the Puskesmas guidelines using centor criteria. Suggestions need to be evaluated against the use of antibiotics in pharyngitis in an effort to reduce the use of antibiotics in accordance with centor criteria.

Abstract

The digitalization of education is reshaping pharmacy instruction through the integration of online learning systems. While the adoption of digital learning continues to grow, research on the perceptions, readiness, and challenges faced by students and faculty in Indonesia remains limited. Understanding these factors is essential for formulating effective strategies in online education. This study investigates the perceptions, readiness, and obstacles encountered by pharmacy students and faculty at Bali International University in relation to online education. It further explores barriers to digital learning and their impact on development needs. Employing a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, the study first gathered quantitative data, followed by qualitative insights through in-depth interviews. A total of 329 respondents participated in the research. The quantitative results revealed no significant association between readiness (OR = 0.957, 95% CI = 0.869–1.055, p = 0.399) or attitude (OR = 1.059, 95% CI = 0.929–1.207, p = 0.364) and development needs. However, barriers showed a statistically significant correlation with development (OR = 1.777, 95% CI = 1.066–2.964, p = 0.027). Qualitative data, analyzed using a thematic framework, identified five central themes: accessibility, collaboration, ICT utilization, professional development, and the broader implications of digitalization in pharmacy education. This study underscores the transformative potential of digital technology and the importance of addressing existing challenges to enhance the quality and accessibility of pharmacy education. These improvements are vital to equipping future pharmacists with the competencies required to thrive in global healthcare systems and effectively contribute to integrated pharmacy services worldwide.

Abstract

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasing global health challenge, especially due to the irrational use of antibiotics. Increasing public awareness of the dangers of AMR is an important step in prevention and control efforts. A counseling program on AMR awareness has been implemented as part of the Community Service Program by Bali International University students in Punggul Village, Badung Regency, Bali Province. Method: This community service activity was carried out on September 5, 2023 and was attended by more than 50 participants, the majority of whom were housewives. The methods used included the presentation of educational materials, interactive sessions, and local culture-based campaigns to increase public understanding regarding the proper and wise use of antibiotics. Results: Evaluation through posttest showed that there was fair knowledge (73.0%) and positif attitude of participants (100%) regarding the importance of rational use of antibiotics. In addition, this activity had a positive impact on students as implementers, especially in improving communication skills, leadership, and community empowerment. Conclusion: This program showed that a community-based educational approach that is sensitive to the local context has significant potential in raising awareness of AMR. Active involvement of young people as agents of change can be a sustainable strategy to support AMR control efforts at the local and global levels.
