Abstract

Differences in employees' educational backgrounds are presumed to influence the quality of salon services received by customers, particularly in terms of professionalism and technical competence. This study aims to compare the service quality between salon employees who are graduates of vocational high schools in beauty (SMK Tata Kecantikan) and those from general or non-beauty vocational high schools (SMA/SMK non-kecantikan). Using a quantitative comparative approach, the research involved customer participants from two salons in Bukittinggi City. Data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire using a 4-point Likert scale and analyzed using the Independent Sample t-Test with SPSS version 0.25. Prior to hypothesis testing, normality (Shapiro-Wilk) and homogeneity (Levene’s Test) checks were conducted. Descriptive analysis showed that beauty school graduates outperformed in the aspects of tangibles, reliability, and empathy but scored lower in assurance. Conversely, non-beauty graduates excelled in reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy, but were weaker in tangibles. However, the t-test results indicated no significant difference in overall service quality between the two groups (p = 0.894 > 0.05). The study concludes that formal educational background does not significantly affect customer perceptions of salon service quality. These findings offer practical implications for salon managers to prioritize training and work experience over educational background in employee recruitment.

Abstract

Although traditional Javanese wedding ceremonies and the Solo Putri bridal makeup style continue to be preserved by the Javanese community in Luhak Nan Duo District, West Pasaman Regency, modernization, socio-economic changes, and declining youth understanding of traditional values have led to the simplification and alteration of customary practices. This study aims to describe the sequence of traditional Javanese wedding ceremonies, analyze the makeup, hair arrangement, and bridal attire of the Solo Putri style, along with their underlying philosophical meanings. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through field observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving community leaders, cultural elders, and bridal makeup artists. Data analysis was conducted through stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, by comparing current practices with traditional standards. The findings indicate that most core ceremonies—such as the engagement, wedding contract (akad nikah), and panggih ceremony—are still preserved in accordance with tradition, while other rituals like siraman, midodareni, and ngunduh mantu are increasingly being abandoned. The Solo Putri makeup style has undergone modifications in materials for paes, cosmetic color choices, and the use of ready-made hair buns instead of traditional pandan buns. Bridal attire has also adapted to modern trends, although it retains distinctive elements such as velvet kebaya and batik cloth featuring the sidoasih motif. These findings underscore the importance of preserving traditions through adaptive practices that respect cultural values, and highlight the need to educate younger generations to ensure the continuity of cultural heritage amidst changing times.

The primary objective of this program was to improve teachers’ understanding of adaptive assessment concepts and to train them in integrating AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, into the process of instructional design and evaluation to make learning more innovative, authentic, and efficient. The activity was conducted on August 2–3, 2025, at the Department of Beauty and Cosmetology Education, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality, Universitas Negeri Padang, involving 25 teachers from five partner vocational schools: SMKN 7 Padang, SMKN 6 Padang, SMKN 3 Payakumbuh, SMKN 1 Sijunjung, and SMKN 2 Bukittinggi. The training employed various methods, including socialization, interactive lectures, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and reflective discussions. The results indicated a significant improvement in teachers’ understanding of adaptive assessment principles and their ability to use ChatGPT to design learning objectives, achievement indicators, assessment instruments, and AI-based scoring rubrics. Participants demonstrated high enthusiasm and readiness to implement digital assessment practices in their respective schools. It is recommended that this program be continued through periodic mentoring and the establishment of an AI-based teacher community forum to ensure the sustainability of adaptive, technology-integrated assessment practices in vocational education. Keywords: adaptive assessment; ChatGPT; artificial intelligence; vocational teachers; vocational learning.
