Abstract

Adolescence is a critical phase of life marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes, which increase vulnerability to health issues such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM). The rising incidence of DM among young people is influenced by poor dietary habits, lack of physical activity, and unhealthy lifestyles. Unfortunately, adolescents often lack awareness about the risks and consequences of DM. To address this, a community service initiative was conducted involving health screening and counseling on DM management and prevention using educational flipcharts. This activity aimed to detect early risk factors and enhance adolescents' understanding of how to independently manage and prevent DM. Evaluation results indicated a significant improvement in knowledge (p-value 0.003 0.05), demonstrating that counseling had a positive impact on adolescents' awareness and comprehension of diabetes management and prevention.

Abstract

This paper aims to grasp the structure and development of Japanese language writings. It examines the element of “Toukatsusei,” the unity of meaning and completeness in the text, which is crucial for language acquisition success. This qualitative descriptive study explores Japanese language reading texts by analyzing characteristics and classification based on their features. Using documentation techniques, data were gathered from 106 Japanese-language instruction readings at the State University of Surabaya, Indonesia, and then compiled into data tables. The structure and meaning of texts in situational and cultural settings were investigated using the referential matching and distribution approach. The findings reveal that emphasis on the subject and coherence in description books depended much on repetition. A coherent story was developed by repeating words, phrases, clauses, and sentences—both whole and in part. Furthermore, it was beneficial to create a unity of meaning and a coherent text structure using conjunctions “tenkagata” and “gyakusetsugata.” This emphasizes how well the Japanese language expresses links between concepts and strengthens the text’s descriptive framework.

Abstract

This study explores the challenges faced by law students in Sidrap Regency when learning Legal English, with a specific focus on the roles of vocabulary acquisition and student motivation. Legal English, as a specialized form of language used in the legal profession, poses unique learning challenges, particularly in terms of its complex terminology and concepts. The research highlights how a limited vocabulary can hinder students' understanding and application of legal texts, while also examining the impact of motivation on the learning process. Through a mixed-methods approach, the study gathers data from both surveys and interviews with law students in Sidrap Regency, aiming to uncover the strategies employed to overcome these obstacles and the factors that influence their motivation. The findings suggest that while vocabulary expansion is crucial, fostering intrinsic motivation through relevant teaching methods and a supportive learning environment can significantly enhance students' engagement and proficiency in Legal English. This research contributes to the understanding of effective pedagogical approaches in teaching Legal English to law students in regional contexts

Abstract

Fire is one of the non-natural disasters that still has a high incidence rate in Indonesia. The primary issue is the low level of public awareness and discipline regarding the use of electrical appliances and stoves, which are often the primary triggers of fire incidents. Early intervention is crucial to prevent the spread of fire damage, one of which is through the use of Fire Extinguishers (APAR) by the first witnesses of the incident. However, initial studies indicate that the public’s knowledge and skills in using APAR are still very low. This community service activity aims to enhance the public’s capacity to use APAR through an educational approach and simulation-based training. The methods used include short educational sessions and direct fire extinguishing simulations using APAR and real flames. Evaluation is conducted through skill observation using checklists before and after the activity. The results of the activity show a significant improvement in participants’ ability to use APAR effectively. With this improvement, it is hoped that the community can perform initial fire-extinguishing actions independently before the fire grows larger or before emergency personnel arrive at the scene.
