Abstract

Background: Hypertension in adolescents is becoming an increasingly important health issue because it can continue into adulthood and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease later in life. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of hypertension and pre-hypertension and to analyze the related factors in adolescents in peri-urban areas. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design conducted in October 2023 on 40 Christian Junior High School 4 Mebung students in Alor Regency. The sample selection was purposive, with inclusion criteria of 13–16 years old. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, interviews, and blood pressure measurements. Blood pressure was measured three times to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results. Data analysis included univariate analysis to describe the characteristics of the respondents and chi-square test to assess the relationship between independent variables (sodium intake, physical activity, parental history of hypertension, sleep duration, sleep quality, and stress) with hypertension status. Results: Pre-hypertension prevalence was 30%, and hypertension was 20%. Three factors showed a significant relationship with hypertension: a history of hypertension in the father (p-value = 0.038), high sodium intake (p-value = 0.002), and sleep duration of less than 8 hours (p-value = 0.001). Other factors, such as a history of hypertension in the mother, physical activity, sleep disorders, and stress, did not show a significant relationship. Conclusion: Hypertension in adolescents in peri-urban areas is related to genetic factors and lifestyle behavior. Prevention efforts need to be focused on low-sodium nutritional education, adequate sleep management, and routine blood pressure screening in schools.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of goat dung charcoal mixture of saboak shell and rice husk on the combustion properties of biocharcoal briquettes. The method used is a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 4 replicates. The treatments were P1 = 25% goat dung charcoal + 75% saboak shell, P2 = 25% goat dung charcoal + 50% saboak shell + 25% rice husk, P3 = 25% goat dung charcoal + 25% saboak shell + 50% rice husk and P4 = 25% goat dung charcoal + 75% rice husk. The variables studied included combustion temperature, combustion rate, combustion resistance, combustion and smoke color, and the ability to boil water. The results of the variance showed that the treatment had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on the combustion temperature, combustion rate, and a very significant effect (P < 0.01) on the ability to boil water, but not significant (P>0.05) on combustion resistance, color and smoke. The average values obtained are combustion temperature 270.2 ⁰C; combustion rate 2.40 g/min; combustion resistance 218.8 minutes; combustion color 3.50; combustion smoke 3.50; ability to boil water 11.68 minutes. It was concluded that biochar briquettes made from a mixture of goat dung charcoal, saboak shell and rice husk with an increasing proportion of rice husk, produced briquettes with combustion quality: combustion temperature, and water boiling ability decreased, but combustion resistance, combustion rate, color and smoke tended to be the same.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of including fermented water spinach and tofu waste in diets on the intake and digestibility of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) in Landrace crossbred pigs at the grower–finisher phase. Twelve pigs aged 3–4 months with initial body weights of 30.00–49.00 kg were assigned to a randomized block design with four treatments (R0: control; R1: 10% inclusion; R2: 15% inclusion; R3: 20% inclusion) and three replications. Data were analyzed using ANOVA. The results showed that up to 20% inclusion of fermented water spinach and tofu waste had no significant effect (P>0.05) on calcium intake, calcium digestibility, or phosphorus intake, but significantly decreased (P<0.05) phosphorus digestibility. It can be concluded that the addition of up to 20% of these ingredients is safe for use in pig diets without reducing mineral intake, although attention should be paid to phosphorus digestibility.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of complete sorghum–Clitoria silage integrated with various horticultural crops on nutrient digestibility in local female goats. Four local female goats aged 6–8 months (body weight 17–23 kg) were used in a Latin square design (4 treatments × 4 periods). The treatments consisted of: R0 (sorghum–Clitoria silage without integration), R1 (integration with bitter melon), R2 (integration with cucumber), and R3 (integration with long bean). Measured parameters included digestible crude protein, digestible energy, and total digestible nutrient (TDN). Analysis of variance showed no significant effect (P>0.05) of the treatments on any of the observed parameters. Thus, the use of complete sorghum–Clitoria silage with different horticultural crop integrations provides comparable effectiveness in supporting nutrient digestibility in local female goats.
