Abstract

Community service represents one of the fundamental contributions of academics to social development, particularly in the educational sector. This article elaborates on the implementation of a community engagement program entitled Towards Smart Pesantren through Digital Transformation, conducted on May 28, 2025, at SMA Bi’rul Ulum Cisait, Serang, Banten. The initiative emerged from an inter-university collaboration aimed at enhancing the digital capacities of santri (Islamic boarding school students) to better prepare them for the challenges of the digital age. The program focused on training in graphic design, public speaking, an introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), and human resource development (HRD) in the digital context. Methods employed in the program included lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on practice, allowing participants to gain both theoretical understanding and practical skills. The participatory approach fostered active engagement and created an enriching learning environment. Evaluation results indicated a high level of enthusiasm among the participants and a marked improvement in their grasp of fundamental digital competencies. This program exemplifies the strategic potential of inter-institutional academic collaboration in supporting the digital transformation of pesantren-based education in Indonesia. It is expected that the initiative can serve as a replicable and sustainable model for future community service efforts in similar educational contexts, particularly in promoting 21st-century skills.

Abstract

The library management training held at Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi (STIE) Dwimulya Serang was a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the capacity and competence of library staff in managing modern and effective library services. The program was conducted over two days using a participatory and educational approach that encouraged direct interaction between facilitators and participants. The training covered essential topics such as the fundamentals of library management, collection classification using the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system, circulation service systems, as well as the digitization of collections and the use of the SLiMS (Senayan Library Management System) automation software. Evaluation results indicated a significant improvement in participants' understanding, with post-test scores increasing by an average of 72% compared to pre-test results. Moreover, participants demonstrated their ability to operate SLiMS for digital collection management and showed a better appreciation of the importance of delivering excellent service to library users. Based on the training outcomes, it is recommended that ongoing training programs and sustained institutional policy support be provided to ensure the continuous development of library management practices. Such efforts are expected to transform the library into a modern learning resource center that is responsive to the evolving needs of the academic community and technological advancements.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the management strategies of coastal areas in supporting the transition toward a green economy in Gunungkidul Regency. The management of coastal zones often faces challenges in balancing economic development with environmental sustainability. Therefore, a strategic approach that integrates social, economic, and ecological dimensions is essential. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with local stakeholders, and the analysis of relevant policy documents. The findings reveal that the local government has implemented various strategies, such as enhancing active community participation in planning and monitoring, promoting participatory coastal ecosystem conservation, and integrating social values into policy formulation. These strategies are consistent with green economy principles emphasizing resource efficiency, low carbon emissions, and social equity. Moreover, efforts to strengthen local institutional capacities and foster environmentally-based microenterprises are integral components of the transition strategy. The main challenges identified include limited public literacy on sustainability, inadequate access to green technologies, and weak cross-sectoral coordination. The study concludes that strengthening multi-sector collaboration, increasing public education, and aligning policies with green development goals are essential to the successful implementation of the green economy in coastal areas. These findings are expected to provide strategic input for local governments and policymakers in designing inclusive and sustainable coastal development programs.

Abstract

Disaster mitigation constitutes an essential phase in disaster management, aiming to reduce potential impacts through early identification of warning signs. At this stage, indicators of possible hazards are recognized, enabling communities to take anticipatory actions to safeguard themselves. This community engagement program focused on disaster mitigation socialization for residents in the coastal tourism area of Sindanglaya Village, which is highly vulnerable to natural hazards. The initiative aimed to equip local residents to serve as informants for tourists while also enhancing community awareness of disaster risks. The materials were delivered by geography experts, Tagana members, local community representatives, and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). The results indicated that local wisdom, expressed through ancestral disaster-related folktales, serves as an enduring form of traditional mitigation. Additionally, communities utilize kentongan (wooden slit drums) and the mosque’s call to prayer as early warning signals during potential hazard events. Evacuation route signs have been installed at key locations, directing residents to move toward hilly areas at least five kilometers from the shoreline. These findings demonstrate that combining scientific knowledge, community participation, and local wisdom effectively strengthens disaster preparedness in coastal regions.
