Abstract

Animals are considered as source of protein should be improved their productivity with the minimum cost production. Agro-industrial by products have been used as animal feed to reduce feed cost. The purpose of this study is to evaluate agro-industrial by product in Aceh as potential local feed for ruminant animals based on chemical composition, fiber fraction and in vitro rumen fermentation. There were eight sources of agro-industrial by products (sago residues, coconut meal, soybean-ketchup by product, coffee pulp, cacao pod, sago tree, corncob, and rice brand) which were collected from 3 different locations in Aceh.  All agro-industrial by product samples were dried at 600C for 24 h and ground to pass a 1 mm sieve. Grounded samples were analyzed to determine chemical composition, fiber fractions and in vitro rumen fermentation. Incubation was conducted at temperature 390C for 48 h in water bath with three replicates. Data for in vitro rumen fermentation were statically calculated by using SPSS differences between treatments were stated (P≤0.05) by using Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results indicated that agro industrial by product from coconut meal, ketchup residues, coffee by product, cacao by product, and rice brand can be used as source of protein and industrial by product from sago by product, sago tree and corncob can be used as source of energy. Neutral detergent  insoluble  CP (NDICP) and Acid detergent insoluble CP (ADICP)  were relatively high for sago by product, sago tree and rice brand but relatively low for cacao by product and corncob. The value of incubated pH for most feed samples was in the normal range. In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and in vitro organic matter  digestibility (IVOMD) were significantly difference (P≤0.05) each agro-industrial by products with the highest for sago and the lowest for coffee by product. In conclusion, agro-industrial by products had a potential feed for ruminant animals both as protein and energy sources. However, feed ingredients with high fiber content and low degradability, further treatments such as physical, chemical and biological treatments were required to improve the feed quality.

Abstract

This experiment aimed to evaluate chemical composition, in vitro rumen fermentation, digestibility, and methane emissions of forages including bede grass, gamal (Gliricidia sepium), Indigofera, lamtoro (Leucaena leucocephala), elephant grass, mini elephant grass and Thai elephant grass. Forage samples were dried at 60oC for 24 hours, then ground to 1 mm sieve. The ground samples were used subsequently to determine the chemical composition and in vitro rumen fermentation test. Incubation was carried out in a water bath at 39oC for 48 h without replication. The results showed that all forages contained various crude protein at a range of 9-20% DM. The proportion of neutral detergent insoluble CP (NDICP) and acid detergent insoluble CP (ADICP) in forage was generally low, but the highest was found in bede grass. The highest NH3 concentration was found in Indigofera incubation, and lowest was in bede grass. All forage samples, except for mini elephant grass and Indigofera, had IVDMD and IVOMD below 70%. We identified low methane emissions from forage at 48 hours of incubation. It was concluded that legumes had a higher crude protein than in grass species and had low methane emissions. However, the relatively low digestibility of legume may limit its utilization.

Abstract

Inadequate feed causes low productivity of livestock, which is indicated by a slow rate of development and low body weight. Alternative non-conventional feed ingredients derived from oil palm waste have shown the potential to be used as livestock feed. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the fiber and ash content of palm fronds fermented with liquid organic supplements. The waste raw material was obtained after grinding the palm fronds and followed by a fermentation process using liquid organic supplements. This process was continued with fiber and ash analysis at the Laboratory of Nutrition Science and Feed Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Syiah Kuala University. A complete randomized design was employed with four treatments using liquid organic supplements at levels of 0%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, with four replications. The measured parameters were water content, crude fiber, ash, and nitrogen-free extract (NFE). The results showed that the addition of liquid organic supplements had no significant effect (P0.05) on the levels of crude fiber, ash, NFE, and water content. Among all treatments, the results were observed in the P3 treatment (8%) which had the lowest crude fiber content and ash content, namely 22 ± 0.589 and 3.72 ± 0.112, as well as had the highest NFE and water content of 78.15 ± 0.501 and 57.9 ± 0.304, respectively. This indicated that the use of liquid organic supplements had the potential to improve the quality of oil palm midrib fiber and positively impact animal feed.

Abstract

Abstract

Forage plays a vital role because it contains substances needed by livestock that can be used for energy metabolism and to support reproduction. Odot grass is very potent and is one of the varieties of elephant grass that grows not too high so that it can be used as shepherd grass. This study aims to see the effect of sheep dung fertilizer application on plant height, number of leaves and leaf area of Odot grass. This study was an experimental trial designed based on a completely randomized design (RAL), with five treatments and four replications: P0 (without sheep dung), P1 (125 gr/hole), P2 (250 gr/hole), P3 (375 gr/hole), and P4 (500 gr/hole). The results showed that the number of sheep dung did not have a significant effect on all research parameters (height, leaves, and leaf area on Odot grass plants); this was most likely caused by the nutrient conditions of the soil where the research was still relatively extensive and met the needs for the growth of Odot grass, so it was not seen the effect of sheep dung on the growth phase of Odot grass (age 0-60 days).

Abstract

Using coffee pulp as an alternative feed for ruminant livestock is one solution that can be used to overcome the problem of fluctuating green feed availability. The primary and sustainable goal to be achieved is the intensification and expansion of plantation waste based on Coffee pulp as an alternative feed to increase the utility of Coffee pulp. The specific target to be achieved is to determine the ability of T.viride with various concentrations to improve physical quality and the ability of molds to maintain their population so that they can produce good quality animal feed with good physical condition to support livestock productivity and growth. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 4 treatments with four replications. The treatment consisted of 0 spores/ml, 105 spores/ml, 106 spores/ml, and 107 spores/ml of T. viride addition. The parameters observed were physical quality (color, texture, odor), pH, and number of spores. Based on the research that has been conducted, it can be concluded that the best treatment of T. viride mold to support a good coffee pulp fermentation process is at a dose of 107 spores/ml of water.

Abstract

Shallots are one of the leading commodities in Indonesia. The demand for shallots has increased, both for consumption and seeds, forcing Indonesia to import to meet these needs. Pidie Regency has been the center for shallot development in Aceh since 2019. This community service activity aimed to transfer knowledge and technology to farmers to produce compost and biochar independently in order to increase productivity and maintain the quality of land fertility. This activity is a demonstration plot for the implementation of the USK 2023 Kedaireka activities, in the fostered village of the Pionir Nusantara Foundation as a partner (Dayah Sukon Village, Pidie Regency) from August to November 2023. Mentoring activities were carried out through FGDs, providing knowledge about onion cultivation technology with sustainable microbial compost and biochar along with pest and disease management. Demonstration of good onion planting and production of Trichoderma and biochar compost and the application techniques were executed at the beginning of the activity. Proceeded with post-harvest and onion production results calculation based on farming efforts. Participants engaged in the activity enthusiastically, asking questions and telling stories about the cultivation practices they have done, learning how to make Trichoderma and biochar compost as well as the problems. Participants planted onion seeds using the land they have. Demonstration plots of sustainable onion cultivation practices with Trichoderma compost and Biochar in fostered villages increase production by 1:15, denoting that 1 kg of seeds produces 15 kg of onion bulbs. This effort is made to drive onions as primary commodity to support the community's economy and increase farmers' income, and be replicated by other farmers to invigorate Pidie Regency as the center for Aceh's shallots production.
