Abstract

One of the efforts to develop ecological literacy skills can be done through formal education. The system owned by formal education, namely schools, is able to induce components that support ecological literacy skills, including knowledge, skills, attitudes and actions. The purpose of this study was to find out what eco-literacy content is in language learning and its impacts on students' pro-environmental habit. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 4 Kota Ternate. The method used in this research is content analysis on textbooks and students interview to obtain information and practical experience of students. Based on the results of data analysis, in class VII and IX, there is one unit each in the textbook which contains literacy ecology with the respective themes 'Let's Clean Up' and 'Let's Live Healthy' (Let’s live a healthy life). For the first theme, the significant impact that is visible and integrated in daily activities at school is that students always maintain cleanliness by sweeping and cleaning before starting lessons, throwing garbage in its place, always cleaning the black-board after use, wearing clean and tidy uniforms when going to school. Interview data also showed that students always helped their parents to clean the house on Sundays, cut thick branches, clean gutters, clean bedrooms, etc. The second theme is about maintaining a healthy life, there are some students who bring food from home because it is cleaner and safer, students regularly cut their nails, cut their hair (for boys), bathe with soap, brush their teeth and wear perfume to school. Based on the analysis and interview data above, it can be concluded that students know, understand, and practice the habit of maintaining cleanliness and healthy living practices in daily life at school and at home, meaning that eco-literacy learning has a positive impact on students' understanding of environmental insights both at school and at home.

Abstract

Cohesion plays an essential part in writing. This study aims to find out what grammatical cohesion device students used in writing. This study is a qualitative study. It was conducted during the semester. Fifteen university students studying essay writing participated as participants of this study. The students’ writing drafts were collected and analyzed. Content analysis was applied. The results showed that the students use two grammatical cohesion devices in their essay writing; references and conjunction. References consist of personal references, demonstrative references, and comparative references while conjunction consists of additive conjunction, adversative conjunction, causal conjunction, and temporal conjunction. On the other hand, there were two grammatical devices that were not found in students writing draft substitution and Ellipsis devices. Thus, those two devices are mostly found in oral communication. It means that the analyzed passages do not expose all of the cohesion devices sufficiently and provide too many highlights on one type which is the reference. This fact showed that the sentences within the text should not be connected by the existence of all cohesion devices. Some of the adequate devices were as much as necessary to create a series of sentences called a text. Some presence of them is already enough to create cohesion.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the teacher's technique in teaching English in bilingual class written by students of the English language education study program at Khairun University. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method in data collection and analysis. The instruments used were observation and interviews. The results of this study involved 1 subject, namely an English teacher, especially those who teach in bilingual class. From the results of this study, there are several teaching techniques that are used and some that are not used by the teacher to teach in bilingual class. Of the 8 techniques proposed by Amidinah (2015), there are only 3 techniques used during the learning process in the classroom. Those are panel discussion techniques, assignment techniques, and also questionanswer techniques. While the techniques that are not meant are lecture methods, discovery and simulation techniques, Inquiry techniques, travel technique and also experimental techniques. So the reason behind those techniques that do not occur in this teaching process is because they are adapted to the conditions and learning materials taught by the teacher in the classroom. where for travel techniques require students to study outside the classroom, experimental techniques are present if the material taught by the teacher is related to observing an object, lecture techniques only focus more on the teacher, while for discovery and simulation techniques only focus on understanding concepts, meanings and relationships, through an intuitive process to draw a conclusion from the learning material.

Abstract

The low students’ speaking ability in learning English on tourism concept demands the need for an innovative learning model which is the main problem in this research. The research aims to determine the effectiveness of project based learning (PjBL) model using local tourism videos in improving students' speaking skills. This type of research is a mixed method  with qualitative and quantitative analysis design. The data collection techniques used were observation, and students’ speaking tests. The data obtained were analysed descriptively and quantitatively. The results showed that the implementation of the PjBL model assisted by local tourism videos proved effective in improving students' speaking skills with the initial average pre-test value was 57.33 and the average post-test value was 82.85. The normality test value was 0.460 which was distributed normally while the hypothesis value was 0.05, that is mean H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, thus it can be concluded that there is an improvement on students’ speaking ability at tourism class students through the implementation of the PjBL model using local tourism videos
