Abstract

Criticism plays a crucial role in improving individual and team performance and addressing shortcomings in workplace processes. However, the way criticism is delivered significantly impacts how it is received. This study examines politeness strategies in delivering criticism in Japanese workplaces, drawing on Nguyen's (2005) politeness theory. Using the Discourse Completion Test (DCT) method, the study involved 25 students from the Japanese Literature Program at Universitas Ngudi Waluyo who work in Japan. The findings reveal that direct criticism is rarely used in Japanese workplaces as it risks disrupting wa (harmony) and causing embarrassment, particularly in formal or peer relationships. Direct criticism is employed only in urgent situations or within hierarchical relationships, characterized by explicit, firm language aimed at immediate correction. Conversely, indirect criticism is more prevalent, utilizing linguistic strategies such as suggestions, invitations, or questions to maintain politeness and relational stability. From a sociopragmatic perspective, cultural norms, status hierarchies, and social contexts influence the choice of criticism strategies. From a pragmalinguistic perspective, subtle and implicit linguistic elements are effective in preserving harmony and avoiding confrontation. The study concludes that the success of delivering criticism relies on balancing communicative effectiveness with maintaining harmonious workplace relationships.

Abstract

Bearings are one of the important components in the machine that functions as a holder and positions the shaft alignment radially when rotating. Statistics show that about 50% of failures in electric motors are related to bearings. Therefore, monitoring bearing performance and efficiency before damage occurs is necessary to avoid more serious damage and save repair costs. This research aims to build a classification model that can identify bearings in normal condition and 6 types of damage (inner crack, outer crack, ball crack, and a combination of both) using the HUST dataset. The model building process begins with collecting datasets, processing and extracting dataset features, building classification models and evaluating the models that have been made. A decision tree is a type of supervised machine learning used to categorize or make predictions based on how a previous set of questions were answered. The model is a form of supervised learning, meaning that the model is trained and tested on a set of data that contains the desired categorization. The results of the decision tree model that has been built are able to identify bearing damage with an accuracy of 94.47%.

Abstract

The primary focus of this research is to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the photoanode based of titania nanotubes in the photoelectrocatalytic process, which enables the simultaneous generation of hydrogen and degradation of ammonia. The modification process involved the incorporation of nitrogen dopant during anodization and sensitization of CuO through Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption Reaction (SILAR). The results of this study showed that the introduction of N dopant led to a significant enhancement in both the ammonia elimination and the hydrogen production, as evidenced by 3N-TiNTAs achieving 74.4% and 561 mmol/m2, respectively. Meanwhile, the highest hydrogen production was observed with 7CuO-TiNTAs at 910.14 mmol/m2. The study revealed that N-TiNTAs exhibited superior performance in ammonia degradation; while CuO-TiNTAs showed higher hydrogen production rates. Furthermore, the mechanistic aspects of the study were also thoroughly examined.

Abstract

This research explores the effectiveness of incorporating picture with the Total Physical Response (TPR) technique to improve vocabulary acquisition and creative thinking in EFL learners. A total of 36 second-grade students took part in two Classroom Action Research (CAR) cycles at SMAN 03 Pamekasan. The low average mark of 58 on the pre-test among students and early observations suggested significant challenges with vocabulary retention, spelling pronunciation and proper usage. TPR integration of movement and language acquisition was paired with writing activities. While introducing vocabulary words during the first cycle students worked together in groups to describe pictures in photos and include images and vocabulary words during the second cycle to increase memory. Although there was a 12.1% increase during the period of the study the outcomes did not meet the minimum passing criteria established by the institution (KKM). During the immediate cycle, additional practice and stress-relief techniques, such as occasionally reviewing images from recent tests, led to a significant improvement, with the average score increasing to 80. The research indicated that when paired with melodies, the TPR method enhanced students' vocabulary fluency, spelling, pronunciation, and accuracy of usage. Furthermore, it fostered greater student involvement, enthusiasm, and creativity in the classroom. Overall, the study demonstrates that TPR and picture provide an engaging, straightforward method for vocabulary acquisition, helping students navigate difficulties in language learning and fostering a more vibrant and enjoyable educational atmosphere.
